Propulsion engine manufacturer Winterthur Gas & Diesel (WinGD) said it has recently signed agreements enabling Wärtsilä Services and CSSC Marine Service Co. Ltd. (CMS) to act as Authorized Global Service Providers. The agreements are valid from January 1, 2018, and allow both providers to offer support for all two-stroke engine brands from Winterthur Gas & Diesel, namely WinGD, Wärtsilä and Sulzer. The support includes delivery of spare parts, provision of service engineers, reconditioning and overhaul work on components, training, upgrade solutions and maintenance agreements.

The National Defense University of Malaysia has selected Kongsberg Maritime’s Engine Room Simulator platform K-Sim Engine for its facility in Kuala Lumpur. The contract, Signed in April 2015, was won with support from Kongsberg Maritime’s local sales representatives, Kelana Stabil (M) Sdn Bhd and civil contracting partner HJS Maritime Sdn Bhd. Case in point, today Maritime Professional Training (MPT)—the largest private maritime training school in the nation— said it selected Fort Lauderdale-based Gulf Building Corp. as the general contractor for the construction of its planned 25,000-square-foot facility expansion at its Fort Lauderdale campus.

When Gustaf de Laval read in 1877 an article in the German periodical ”Milchzeitung” (Milk News Paper) about centrifugal separators, he certainly did not expect that it would lead to his founding of a global acting company with around 16,400 employees nearly 140 years later. His first continuous separator, with a capacity of 130 liters per hour, was demonstrated 1879 in Stockholm; and four years later, in 1883, he and his partner, Oscar Lamm, established the company AB Separator.

A new Multi-Purpose Kongsberg Maritime Polaris ship’s bridge simulator has become a key coastal and port development resource for The Instituto Mexicano del Transporte (IMT) following the opening of its new research facility in August 2013. Based in Queretaro, Mexico, IMT is the leading Research Center for Ports and Coasts in Mexico. The organization is using its new Polaris simulator, which was ordered in April 2013, within its maritime research, development and project planning activities.

Kongsberg Maritime has won the competitive tender to conduct an upgrade and extension of the simulation facility at Noorderpoort Eemsdollard – Energy & Maritime in Delfzil, The Netherlands. The contract includes upgrade of the Kongsberg Maritime simulators installed at Noorderpoort Eemsdollard’s Abel Tasman College in 2006, which have now been moved to a brand new training facility in Delfzil. Bouchard Transportation Co., Inc., headquartered in Melville, N.Y., said that the company will dpnate $750,000 to the State university of New York (SUNY) Maritime College’s Throgs Neck Campus to establish the Bouchard Transportation Company, Inc., Tug and Barge Simulation Center. The center will offer full mission bridge simulators, instruction stations and a debriefing area where instructors can meet with students to discuss navigation, seamanship and bridge resource management skills required in the operation of tug and barges.

Resolve Maritime Academy (RMA) has ordered the Transas Techsim 5000, DNV approved, Class A, Full Mission Engine Room Simulator for their new simulation facility in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The new engine simulation systems currently being deployed will facilitate the conduct of a wide range of courses for the training of marine engineers, including operational and emergency procedures and crew resource management training with Resolve’s existing Transas Full Mission Bridge Simulators.

HR Wallingford has recently signed an alliance agreement with Fremantle Maritime Simulation Centre (FMSC). This gives HR Wallingford the capability to conduct navigation simulation work in Western Australia. HR Wallingford is an independent engineering and environmental hydraulics organisation, and FMSC is a state-of-the-art simulation facility, providing access to specialist marine pilot consultancy, in Fremantle, West Australia. The newly formed alliance is presently operating out of FMSC's premises in Fremantle near Perth but will shortly be moving to a new purpose built facility, also in Fremantle. The move should take place before the end of August and the facility will then have three ship simulators, two full bridge and one tug.

Hereema Marine Contractors Nederland B.V Inc. (“HMC”) has awarded a contract to BMT Fluid Mechanics in partnership with BMT ARGOSS, to provide Tow Simulation Services for the inshore tow of Chevron-operated Jack St. Malo and Big Foot Production Platforms to be installed in the Gulf of Mexico. BMT will be engineering, procuring, installing and commissioning a purpose built simulation facility to be located in Houston, Texas, for the purpose of training tug captains and other marine personnel involved with the inshore towing of the platforms from the Ingleside integration yards. The inshore tows are particularly challenging because of the extremely small hull clearances within the shipping channels leading from the yards out to the gulf.

Marlink and Thrane & Thrane have come to an agreement for the introduction of the brand new Thrane & Thrane SAILOR 900 VSAT antenna, which is commercially released in September 2011. Maritime Professional Training (MPT), a DNV Approved Maritime Training Center and an ISO 9001:2008 Company, has committed another $1.5m to further enhance its “Project 2010 & Beyond”. This project was envisioned as a means to update a wide range of their courses and enhance the learning experience and cost effectiveness for their students. MPT said the funds will be spent almost exclusively as part of their ongoing expansion of its simulation facility, the S.M.A.R.T. Campus. The facility conducts Simulation for Maritime Assessment Research and Training and has long been used for both regulatory course compliance as well as research projects for port development and familiarization training.

The California Maritime Academy, a campus of California State University, is one step closer to having the most advanced training ship in the United States. The campus has been awarded a $215,000 dollar-for-dollar matching challenge grant from the TK Foundation. Every dollar donated in support of the Navigation Lab by a company, foundation or individual will be matched by the TK Foundation. The gift will support Phase 2 of the construction of a Navigation Lab onboard Cal Maritime’s Training Ship Golden Bear.
