Singapore Scheme to Tackle Lack of Marine Engineers

Singapore has launched an initiative to attract more locals to take up a career as a marine engineer. The joint venture between unions, government and industry aims to address an acute shortage. A new S$1.2 million Tripartite Engineering Training Award (TETA) Programme was launched by Lim Swee Say, the Minister for Manpower. According to a press release, TETA is a joint initiative by Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union (SMOU), Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA), National Trades Union Congress’ Employment and Employability Institute (e2i). Worker Safety Program Launched in Singapore

The Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA) and the Det Norske Veritas (DNV) Clean Technology Centre has announced the WDA-DNV Excellence In Safety Training (WEST) programme to raise safety standards and skills for the manufacturing workforce to benefit 80 local workers over the next year. The programme is the first collaboration between WDA and DNV to equip the Singapore manufacturing workforce with safety excellence skills which are critical in managing risks and preventing major accidents for the high value-added manufacturing sector. At times, these companies could have neglected safety and may result in dramatic loss of economic returns and social losses.

Keppel Opens Immersive Safety Training Hub

Keppel opened its new integrated safety training facility, the Keppel Safety Training Centre. Located at Keppel Shipyard in Tuas, the Centre offers a complete range of safety training and certification courses in both trade-specific and broad-based skills for its workforce across all levels. The Training Centre is one of the key elements of Keppel Shipyard’s Safety Excellence (SE) 2015 initiative, through which the company seeks to foster a pervasive safety culture and impart relevant safety competencies to its 14,000-strong multinational workforce, including subcontractors.
