Wärtsilä, Berge Bulk in Marine Industry’s "First-ever" Shaft Generator Retrofit

Finland's marine technology company Wärtsilä said Tuesday it had retrofitted an inline shaft generator system on the ‘Berge Toubkal’, a cape-size bulk carrier owned by Singapore-based Berge Bulk, in what it said was an industry first."This is the marine industry’s first-ever shaft generator retrofit, and its successful completion will improve the vessel’s Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) while reducing overall carbon footprint," Wärtsilä said."Shaft generator systems onboard ships are driven by the main engine to supply power to the mains, thus saving fuel and emissions.

KDI inks deal with Rocktree to 'Digitalize' Bulk Carrier

Kongsberg Digital (KDI) signed a contract with Singapore-based transshipment company Rocktree to provide its Vessel Insight technology for the Supramax size Bulk carrier modified to an Offshore Floating Terminal (OFT) RT LEO. Knightsbridge Completes Vessel Acquisition

Knightsbridge Shipping Limited announce that the second and final stage of its vessel acquisition transaction with Frontline 2012 Ltd. has closed.   The company has issued 31 million shares to Frontline 2012 Ltd. in exchange for 12 Cape size bulk carrier newbuildings.   Knightsbridge said it will have 111.1 million common shares outstanding following this transaction

MOL Bulker is the First Built with Safer Hull

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) announced the world’s first use of highly ductile steel plate NSafe-Hull, developed by Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation on a merchant vessel. The ship featuring this new safety-enhancing feature, a large-size bulk carrier, was launched on August 2. The NSafe-Hull’s highly ductile steel reportedly absorbs side impact to the hull three times more effectively than conventional steel plate, reducing the risk of cracks in the hull and significantly increasing the safety of the vessel, MOL said.

China Shipyard Delivers Handymax Size Bulk Carrier

COSCO Corporation (Singapore) inform that its Dalian Shipyard in China has delivered a bulk carrier of 57000 dwt, named "GUOTOU 108", to its Asian buyer. The Handymax bulker measures 189.99 meters in LOA, 32.26 meters in breadth and 18 meters in depth. About COSCO Shipyard Founded in June 2001, COSCO Shipyard Group Co., Ltd, is a subsidiary of China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO). It specializes in large vessel construction, marine engineering, conversion, and providing ship repair services. The group has shipyards in Dalian, Nantong, Zhoushan, Guangdong Province, Shanghai, Lian Yungang and other places in China.

Handy-size Bulk Carrier Market: Tonnage Shortage Pushes Up Rates

The NCSA-USG area remains short of tonnage: a 34,000 dwt bulk ship is well-linked to US$ 15,000 daily for a short period of 3-5 months, reports BMTI in its latest 'Handy Bulk Market Viewpoint'. Owners of a similar size of tonnage were seeing US$ 24,000 daily for a trip to Europe. A range of US$ 20,000 daily from NCSA via the USG to the Continent from owners of a 36,000 dwt was rebuffed by charterers as being too expensive. From the NCSA, undisclosed charterers were chasing a 35,000dwt for short period at US$ 13,500, which was about US$ 2,000 short of the owner's ideas.

New Bulker Design Introduced by Imabari Shipbuilding

Japan's Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. introduce a new class of 33,000 dwt bulk carrier designated 'IS' TRI-STAR. The shipbuilders say that its share of the handy-size bulk carrier market is ranked among the highest in the world. Since 2010, over 30 vessels of the "IS" BARI-STAR, 38,000 dwt-type bulk carrier have been delivered, and over 200 vessels of  the 28,000 dwt-type have been delivered since 1990. However, to satisfy customer demand they have decided to launch their newly developed 33,000 dwt- type bulk carrier –  "IS" TRI-STAR into the handy-size bulk carrier market.

M/V "New Expedition" Delivered

New Design-11th Cape-size Bulk Carrier of Dunkerque-max Type. Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES with President Mr. Yasuhiko Katoh) completed and delivered 174,600 dwt type bulk carrier, MV "New Expedtion" (MES HULL No. 1825) at its Chiba Works on February 1st, 2013 to Salute Maritime S.A., Panama. This ship is the 11th ship of the designed Cape-size Bulk Carrier of Dunkerque-max Type(*). It enables effective cargo handling, easy maintenance of cargo holds and structural safety by adopting a double-side skin to cargo holds construction.

'Aero-Citadel', Anti-piracy, Pro-energy, Ship Superstructure

The Aero-Citadel is a superstructure with a slim streamlined shape which combines ship's accommodation, engine room , and funnel casing. Wind pressure during navigation will be reduced by 25-30% (ahown by wind tunnel testing). In a Cape size bulk carrier, the modular superstructure will enable a decrease of about 2% in fuel consumption (at normal output, about 9m/sec. in a Beaufort force 5 head wind). New marine use LED lighting is also introduced to the accommodation and engine room lighting system, which reduces electric power consumption used for lighting by about 50%.

Capital Product Partners Announces Sale of M/T Aristofanis

Athens, Greece - Capital Product Partners L.P. announced the sale of the M/T ‘Aristofanis’ (12,000 dwt, built in 2005 Baima Shipyard, PRC). The vessel was sold to an unrelated third party, and proceeds from the sale were used to repay bank debt. Following the completion of this sale, all of the Partnerships vessels are under period charters with an average remaining term of 5.0 years (as of March 31, 2012). The Partnership’s fleet of 25 vessels has an average age of 4.1 years and is comprised of 6 crude tanker vessels; 18 modern MR tankers, ranging in size from 36,000 to 51,000 dwt;  and one cape-size bulk carrier.

MES Delivers Pair of Bulk Carriers

Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES) completed and delivered a 56,000 dwt type bulk carrier M.V. “DESERT CONDOR” (MES Hull No. 1776) at its Tamano Works on September 29, 2011 to New Borough Corp., Marshall Islands. This vessel is a handy-max type bulk carrier of 56,000 dwt with a huge cargo hold capacity over 70,000 m3 and marks the 133rd ship of its series. This 56,000 dwt type bulk carrier series of MES is widely called “Mitsui’s 56” and is highly appreciated in the market. About 170 units of this series have been ordered from MES.

MV Cape Britannia Bulk Carrier Delivered

Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES with President Mr. Yasuhiko Katoh) completed and delivered 177,000 dwt type bulk carrier, MV Cape Britannia (MES HULL No. 1694) at its Chiba Works on June 11, 2009. This ship is the 2nd ship of the newly designed Cape-size Bulk Carrier of Dunkerque-max Type. It enables effective cargo handling, easy maintenance of cargo holds and structural safety by adopting a double-side skin to cargo holds construction. Length o.a. Length b.p. In spite of cargo holds bounded by a double-side skin according to SOLAS, the cargo capacity of the ship is equivalent to that of conventional Cape-size bulk carriers with holds bounded by a single-side skin.

Dunkerque-max M/V Cape Garland Delivered

Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. completed and delivered the 177,000 dwt type bulk carrier MV Cape Garland (Hull No. 1693) at its Chiba Works on January 30, 2009. This ship is the newly designed Cape-size Bulk Carrier of Dunkerque-max Type. It has a double-side skin to cargo holds construction. A Dunkerque-max type is a common name for Cape-size Bulk Carriers built to the restriction of the port of Dunkirque, France.

Cicek Launches Bulk Carrier Design at SMM

The Turkish shipbuilder Cicek Shipyard has launched a new 25,000dwt bulk carrier design at the SMM 2008 exhibition in Hamburg (23 - 26 September). The current handy-size bulk carrier fleet is now ageing and Cicek believes that many owners will soon be placing orders for replacement tonnage that both meets new regulations and offers improved efficiency. International Shipholding Corporation Reports Third Quarter Results

International Shipholding Corporation reported results for the quarter ended September 30, 2001. Net loss for the third quarter was $165,000 as compared to net income of $418,000 for the third quarter of 2000. For the nine months of 2001, International Shipholding Corporation reported a net loss of $62.9 million as compared to net income of 461,000 during the first nine months of 2000. Since the second quarter announcement, International Shipholding Corporation’s intent to dispose of certain of its assets, their Cape-size Bulk Carrier was sold during the third quarter. The process of disposing of the LASH Assets and the special purpose barges is continuing.

International Shipholding Corporation reported results for the year and quarter ended December 31, 2001. Net loss for the fourth quarter was $1.5 million as compared to net income of $775,000 for the fourth quarter of 2000. NKK Delivers Cape-size Bulk Carrier

NKK Corp. has delivered the 172,559DWT bulk carrier, Cape Salvia, to its owner Pinos Maritime S.A. of Panama. The bulk carrier is the ship of designed with the Ax-bow developed by NKK, which is effective to reduce the sea margin. The Ax-Bow allows 20-30 percent reduction in ship’s sea margin compared with the conventional bow. The Ax-Bow is a sharp-edged bow shape above the waterline. This is effective in cutting through the waves, and decreases the sea margin, or engine output is maintained constant ship speed in rough sea. The Ax-Bow, therefore, is expected to be more effective to full hull form ships like bulk carriers and tankers.

Wärtsilä Wins FP Propeller Order for Bulk Carriers

Wärtsilä has won a Vinashin Shipbuilding Industry Corporation contract to supply fixed pitch (FP) propellers for a series of five bulk carriers under construction for UK-based shipowner Graig Group. The contract signed in November, marks Wärtsilä's first FP propeller contract from a Vietnamese shipyard. Due for delivery in August 2007, the first LIPS-type propeller will be for installation to a Diamond 34K bulker under construction at Vinashin's Pha Rung shipyard. The first vessel is due for delivery to Graig in November 2007. with a length of 590 ft., a molded breadth of 98.4 ft. 34,000 tons. Italian shipowner. Wärtsilä's LIPS-type fixed pitch propeller propellers are custom designed and made for each application.
