SHI, SKT Trial Autonomous Ship Using 5G
South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) and compatriot telecommunications operator SK Telecom (SKT) have developed a 5G-based autonomous navigation platform that will allow ships to move to set destinations on their own.The trial was conducted using a 3.3m craft developed by SHI and equipped with 5G-based LiDAR, cloud-based IoT platform and T Live Caster, SK Telecom’s real-time video monitoring solution at a shipyard covered by SKT’s 5G network.The test operation took place in the sea near SHI’s Geoje Shipyard, which is covered by SK Telecom’s 5G network.From the Remote Control Center in Daejeon, located 250 kilometers from the shipyard…
South Korea's Daewoo & SKT in 'Smart Ship' R&D Project
Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), the world's second-largest shipbuilder, and Korea's top mobile carrier, SK Telecom (SKT), have teamed up to develop ICT-based "smart ships" reports the Korea Times. SKT has signed a memorandum of understanding with DSME to cooperate in a research and development (R&D) venture to build the high-tech, next-generation ships. The vessel will be equipped with a global telecommunication network based on navigation and monitoring systems, while all the on-board services will be converged onto a single network. Under the alliance, SKT will provide ICT guidelines, optimized blueprints and R&D resources, while DSME will share the needs of ship owners and smart ship-related research achievements.
Korean Shipbuilders DSME Establish Smart Shipyard
DSME has now established the fourth generation of cellular wireless standards (4G) in the shipyard with technology belonging to SK Telecom, and by this means DSME adopted its Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless communication technology. In the project, DSME first rebuilt the shipyard’s communication infrastructure and Okpo shipyard’s 3G radio wave reception was enhanced, so that the mobile user could access the network even in sealed areas such as the engine room of the vessel. The company also installed more base stations to improve calling during a sea trial. Secondly, DSME developed new applications which can be used on smart phones or tablet PCs.
