Richard Mueller Named President-elect of SNAME

Richard Mueller, president and CEO of naval architecture and marine engineering firm NETSCo has been elected as president-elect of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) and is slated to ascend to the presidency in the subsequent year.With almost five decades of experience in the maritime industry, Mueller is a respected and accomplished professional in the field of naval architecture and marine engineering. He has been a member of SNAME for over 46 years and has been actively involved in several of the society's leadership activities.

Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri has floated out the Viking Saturn, the latest cruise ship Fincantieri is building for the shipowner Viking, at the shipyard in Ancona, Italy.Present at the ceremony were Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking, and Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO of Fincantieri. Fincantieri Floats Out Viking Neptune

Italian shipbuilding group Fincantieri said Thursday it has floated out the newest ocean cruise ship it is building for shipowner Viking.The new ship, Viking Neptune, was floated out at Fincantieri's Ancona shipyard. The Philippines: Boskalis Nets Largest Deal in Its History

Dutch marine and dredging giant Boskalis has won a contract for the land development design and construction of the Manila International Airport (MIA) in the Philippines, in what the company said Tuesday was its largest contract ever.The contract was awarded by San Miguel Aerocity Inc (SMAI), a subsidiary of San Miguel Corporation (SMC), one of the largest companies in the Philippines. SMAI is the concession holder of MIA, which is a greenfield development aimed at serving the growing air traffic demands in the Greater Capital Region of Manila and will complement the air traffic operations at the existing and congested Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

SGRE Hires SMC at Formosa 1 Offshore

UK-based Specialist Marine Consultants (SMC) has been awarded a contract to provide Marine Coordination services to Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) at the Formosa 1 offshore wind farm, Taiwan’s first commercial offshore windfarm.The Formosa 1 project will comprise 20 6MW Siemens Gamesa WTGs and will become Taiwan’s first commercial offshore windfarm, with an eventual capacity of 120MW.This contract award further strengthens the relationship between SMC and SGRE, who have worked together on offshore wind projects across Europe since 2009. Spirit of Discovery Completes Ems Conveyance

The new cruise ship for British Saga Cruises, Spirit of Discovery, along with ship building team at Meyer Werft, Germany completed the conveyance from the Papenburg shipyard along the River Ems to the open sea. Seacat Renews SMC Deal

Offshore energy support vessel operator Seacat Services has extended the vessel inspection agreement with Specialist Marine Consultants (SMC), the health and safety advisory to the marine and energy industry.The agreement marks the second year that SMC has been contracted to carry out the Marine Inspection for Small Workboats (eMISW) for the 14-strong Seacat Services fleet.The eMISW is an annual assessment of metrics including vessel integrity, stability, and life-saving facilities. A valid eMISW report with at least 6 months left to run is generally a prerequisite for vessels under 24m and 500 tonnes starting contracts in the offshore energy industry.

Schulte Marine Concept Wins First Cruise Ship Newbuild Contract

Schulte Marine Concept (SMC) said it has won its first cruise ship contract with Portugal-based Mystic Cruises. Schulte Marine Concept the project management arm of maritime services company Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM), working together with Bernhard Schulte Cruise Services (BS Cruise), will provide technical consultancy and newbuild supervision services to support construction of the oceangoing luxury expedition cruise ship, MS World Explorer. MS World Explorer will be built as a 126-meter long expedition cruise ship with a passenger capacity of 200 and a crew complement of 111.

The fourth of eight cruise ships Viking Ocean Cruises has ordered from Fincantieri has been delivered at the shipyard in Ancona. Viking Sun, as its sister ships, is placed in the small cruise ship segment. With a gross tonnage of about 47,800 tons, it has 465 cabins with accommodation for 930 passengers, with a total capacity of over 1,400 people, including the crew. The ship’s interior design team included London-based SMC Design and Los Angeles-based Rottet Studios. In addition to the all-veranda staterooms, the ship also has spacious suites with sweeping views, two pools, of which one Infinity Pool off the stern, and a Spa designed according to the wellness philosophy of the Scandinavian tradition, with a sauna and a snow grotto.

ClassNK e-Certificate Authorized by Liberian Registry

Classification society ClassNK has received authorization from the Liberian Registry to provide Liberian flagged vessels with electronic certificates for statutory surveys. ClassNK is the world’s first classification society to be authorized by the Liberian Registry to issue certificates in electronic form. In order to reduce the administrative burdens associated with the sending and onboard storing of numerous certificates, coupled with the goal of making certificate information easier to retrieve, ClassNK developed the “ClassNK e-Certificate” system.

FORAN System of Designing, Building Twin Vessels Presented at SNAME

Glosten to Chair SNAME Shipbuilding Panel

Seattle-based naval architecture and marine engineering consultancy Glosten said it will chair a panel on modern shipbuilding at this year’s SNAME Maritime Convention (SMC) in Bellevue, Wash. The panel will discuss new technologies in shipbuilding, how to address an aging workforce, new approaches to training, and nontraditional design deliverables. “We’re excited to bring attention to this critical topic at SMC this year,” said Josh Horst, PE, Glosten’s Manager of Production Services and SMC Panel Chair. “Shipbuilding is vital to Seattle’s economy, and advances in technology are changing the approach to traditional practices. As designers, we have a responsibility to critically evaluate these advancements, and collaborate with shipyards to implement them.
