Today in U.S. 1867 - Capt. William Reynolds of Lackawanna raises U.S. flag over Midway Island and took formal possession of these islands for the U.S. 1942 - 120 women, commissioned directly as ENS or LTJG, reported to "USS Northampton," Smith College for training. 1952 - Units on USS Boxer (CV-21) launch explosive-filled drone which explodes against railroad bridge near Hungnam, Korea. First guided missile launched from ship during Korean Conflict. 1965 - Cdr. Scott Carpenter and nine aquanauts enter SeaLab II, 205 ft.

Iraqi Delegates to Visit OPITO

Following the signing of a landmark agreement with the Iraq Ministry for Oil to help the war-torn country develop the skills and training necessary to exploit its hydrocarbon resources, OPITO will welcome a senior delegation from Iraq on a fact-finding mission. The delegation, made up of five senior figures from Iraq’s Ministry for Oil and the deans of the four oil technical institutes in Basrah, Kirkuk, Baghdad and Tikrit, is visiting Scotland for four days this week. Paul Stuart Crandall’s Legacy Lives On

Paul Stuart Crandall passed away on July 20, 2002 following a massive stroke. A Civil Engineering graduate, MIT class of 1942, and a registered professional engineer, Paul Crandall served 3-1/2 years with the US Army Corps of Engineers in the Water Supply Battalion operating in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany during WWII. Crandall joined Crandall Dry Dock Engineers in 1945 as the fifth generation of engineers to carry on the dry dock business begun in 1854 by his great-great grandfather, William H. Crandall. He served as designer, field engineer, and subsequently principal engineer until 1953 when he became President of Crandall Dry Dock Engineers.

Markunas and Hays Join Woods Hole Group

Peter Markunas of Eastham and Beth Hays of Brewster have joined the Woods Hole Group as Coastal Engineer and Environmental Permitting Specialist, respectively. Markunas brings over 35 years of experience in engineering and environmental design, planning, and construction. For the past twenty years, Markunas has been a presence in New England, with specific focus on the lower Cape Cod region of Massachusetts. He has been heavily involved in the protection of shoreline properties, marina design and dredging of piers, boathouses, and boat ramps for municipalities and private interests.
