There has been little reaction by way of statements or position papers from marine fuel lubricant manufacturers to the IMO MEPC70 proposals for a global fuel sulfur content cap of 0.5 percent by 2020 but they are fully aware of the implications of the proposed regulations and are taking what could be termed a ‘pragmatic approach’ to fuel regulation compliance. As of April 2016, Shell Marine Products (SMP) has analyzed more than 50,000 cylinder drain oils samples via its Shell Rapid Lubricants Analysis (RLA) oil condition monitoring service. By identifying potential oil or equipment issues before they become critical, many shipping companies use Shell RLA as part of their planned maintenance regime. Shell Offers Smooth Transition to ECAs

The shipping world has been settling down to new restrictions on sulphur content in fuel, introduced after January 1, 2015 in ECAs. Ships in the Baltic Sea, North Sea, English Channel, and waters 200 nautical miles from the coast of U.S. and Canada now need to operate on fuels with a maximum 0.1 percent sulphur content. Since the implementation of Emission Control Areas (ECAs) on January 1, 2015, ships entering waters in the Baltic Sea; the North Sea; the North American ECA, including most of the U.S. and Canadian coast, as well as the French overseas collectivities of St. Pierre and Miquelon; and the U.S. Caribbean ECA, including Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands Sea had to use fuels with up to 0.1% sulphur content. Tullow Oil Exploration and Appraisal Update in Kenya

Tullow Oil plc announces the successful results from a series of exploration, appraisal and testing activities conducted in Blocks 10BB and 13T onshore Kenya. The Etom-1 well in Block 13T is the most northerly well drilled to date in the South Lokichar basin, 6.5 km north of the previous Agete-1 discovery. The well encountered approximately 10 metres of net oil pay, extending the proven oil basin significantly northwards. Based on this result the ongoing 550 sq km 3D seismic survey in the South Lokichar basin has been extended to cover a further 247sq km in this northern area, including several similar prospects which are scheduled to be drilled in 2015. The Weatherford 804 rig drilled the Etom-1 well to a final depth of 2,000 metres.

Divers Search Sunken Iraqi Oil Tanker

Sterling Global Operations (SGO) has been chosen to provide surface - supplied divers for unexploded ordnance search and removal and salvage operations for the sunken 82,000-ton Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) Amuriyah, an Iraqi tanker sunk near Bubiyan Island off the coast of Kuwait in Jan. 1991 during Operation Desert Storm. Special Diving Services (SDS) Holland hired SGO for this project. "For years SGO has conducted major demining and unexploded ordnance clearance projects in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other countries around the world," said Matt Hulsey, SGO vice president of programs.

AMP Port of LA: Cavotec Wins Contract

Cavotec wins Alternative Maritime Power (SMP) shore power equipment orders at Port of Los Angeles (POLA). Cavotec AMP systems enable vessels to switch off their engines while docked and to connect to shore side electricity. Services such as power supply for reefer containers, lighting, heating, food preparation and cargo handling are then run directly from the port. Cavotec will supply a large number of "Easy Lift" Access Covers and Shore Power Outlet Connection boxes for four separate container terminals at the Port. These orders include equipment for POLA berths 228, 401-406, 100-102, 121-128 and 212-216. Cavotec's innovative "Easy Lift" Access Covers are safer for personnel to operate than many existing alternatives.

Shell Marine Products Wins MSC Contract

Shell Marine Products (US) Company (SMP) has been awarded a Department of Defense contract to support more than 150 government-owned ships in the U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command (MSC) fleet worldwide. The company competed for the right to supply marine lubricants and provide waste oil disposal services and related engineering support services. The contract value is approximately $8.6 million and work will be performed in various locations around the world for a period of one year, starting January 1, 2005. The contract represents a significant achievement for the growth aspirations of SMP. It includes four one-year options, which if exercised, would bring the total cumulative estimated value of this contract to approximately $46.5 million.

SMP Expands Ops in Mobile, Ala.

Shell Marine Products (SMP), the global supplier of marine fuels, lubricants and services, announced the start-up of its bunker fuels operations in Mobile, Ala. The company already has a strong business base in the USA Gulf Coast region, supplying bunker fuels and lubricants, and has expanded its geographic coverage to offer fuel oil, gas oil and lubricants to customers in Mobile. Shell Marine Products has fuel oil storage facilities in Mobile Harbor located at Radcliff/Economy Terminal. The company has also secured privileged access to the only double-hull bunker barge in the region to facilitate all fuel oil deliveries. With over 1,000 ships calling Mobile harbor each year, the region is an interesting bunkering market.

Norsk Hydro Begins Exploration Using SGI Technology

Norsk Hydro ASA selected SGItechnology to expand its national and international oil exploration efforts as well as for a number of research projects. To perform seismic acoustic tomography and migration velocity analysis to determine optimal oil well drilling sites, Norsk Hydro's facility in Bergen, Norway, selected a large, shared-memory SGI Altix system. For its research center in the port city of Porsgrunn, Norsk Hydro acquired an SGI Altix for computational fluid dynamics applications and a Silicon Graphics Prism visualization system. Norsk Hydro's research center in Bergen is developing and testing different methods of imaging and working on a large variety of technical services for oil and gas production.
