Three Engineers Win DNV GL Award for Young Professionals

DNV GL has honoured three engineers for their scientific research with the DNV GL Award for Young Professionals. Presented by DNV GL – Maritime CEO Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen at the Posidonia trade fair, the award is designed to find innovative ideas for increasing safety, efficiency and sustainability in shipping. As well as seeking out the best new research, the award aims to support young professionals in the maritime field. Overall, 24 people took part in the competition. “Young professionals are a driving force in developing innovative solutions to the challenges shipping faces today and in the future. This award was created to honour the brightest among tomorrow’s industry experts and it is very interesting to learn more about this year’s winning projects…

Navigational Charts App Debuts at Ocean Business

An independent consultancy and software development company will launch a new web and PC based navigational charting app at Ocean Business 2015. Norcom Technology Limited said its eChart software combines up to date information from different sources including wreck, cable, tide and geographical data for navigational charts, making it suited for use by companies carrying out desktop studies prior to installation of offshore structures, cables, pipelines and vessel monitoring.

FloScan, Krill Systems Fuel Savings for Workboats

Accuracy, reliability and durability are the critical elements in determining a vessel's fuel consumption under varying load and sea conditions. FloScan says its direct flow measurement systems are more accurate than algorithm-based techniques. Models are available for all makes of marine diesel engines up to 6000 hp in tugboats and workboats of all kinds for applications including propulsion engines, gensets, bow thrusters and other diesel-powered systems. Krill Systems, a provider of integrated onboard and remote vessel monitoring systems for yachts and commercial vessels, recently introduced their SmartTug software, a PC based software system that improves vessel efficiency and data communication in a highly competitive and cost conscious industry.

Comsat Teams With NOAA and Coast Guard For Maritime Reporting

Comsat Mobile Communications(CMC), a unit of Lockheed Martin Global Telecommunications, has teamed with the United States Coast Guard and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to offer free Amver/SEAS (formerly Automated Mutual-assistance VEssel Rescue / Shipboard Environmental-data Acquisition Systems) messaging to mariners that use COMSAT-C satellite messaging service. CMC recently distributed more than 2,000 free packages of Amver/SEAS software to vessels and maritime shipping companies. This software combines Amver capabilities with NOAA volunteer observing ships weather reporting. The software, which uses a message format developed by COMSAT, enables ships to send compressed data via Inmarsat-C terminals using COMSAT-C service.
