Middle East's Ageing Structures a Challenge - DNV GL

Collaboration is Key to tackling Middle East's ageing structures challenge say DNV GL. The Middle East faces a substantial challenge to ensure hundreds of ageing offshore oil and gas structures operate safely beyond original design life. Constraining operational expenditure (opex) is vital to economically viable operations, according to Anupam Ghosal, newly appointed regional manager for Middle East and India, DNV GL - Oil & Gas. “Of the 700 to 800 fixed platforms and bridges in the region,  we believe more than 70% are older than 25 years and some even exceed 40 years. The structural integrity management challenge is complex and critical for many operators seeking to extend the economic life of assets.

3-D Approach Aids Ship Production

Genoa Design International has completed the structural production work pack for an aluminum-built Canadian Coast Guard Buoy-tending vessel. Genoa Design's 3-D modeling approach used in the structural production phase of the project led to significant efficiencies for the vessel's builder, C&W Industrial Fabrication and Marine Equipment Ltd., located in Bay Bulls, Newfoundland. After initial team planning, the detail designers and drafters at Genoa Design used ShipConstructor production software to create a 3-D model of the Coast Guard vessel. The combination of C&W's engineering staff along with Genoa's off-site professional expertise and sophisticated software resulted in several benefits and overall, the process integrated well with C&W's progressive approach to lean manufacturing.

Intelligent Software Agents for Machinery Diagnostics

Machinery plant maintenance represents a major expense for ship operators. In addition to normal maintenance expenditures, unexpected breakdowns have a significant cost impact. Recognizing the importance of preventing equipment failures, companies continue to adopt automation for machinery monitoring at a rapid pace. Continual improvements in the price/performance ratio of automation systems have also fueled their increased use in shipboard machinery plant monitoring. As a result, more ships with automated machinery plants exist today than ever before. However, just as a typical Internet search can easily create "information overload", so too can process automation create a "data overload" situation for the engineering crews responsible for equipment operation and maintenance.
