Big IT: How Fast, How Far Will IT Drive Maritime?

The IT industry doesn’t like to stand still. Upgrades, updates, new versions and enhanced functionality are released on a regular basis. New services are enabled, bottlenecks eliminated, more joined up operations enabled. The underlying platform remains the same but, over time, its capabilities evolve and stretch to meet changing expectations. But then, every so often, something far more dramatic comes along. We are experiencing one of these more dramatic periods at the moment.

DP World Australia Expedites Navis N4 Upgrades

Navis, the global technology standard for managing the movement of cargo through terminals, has announced that DP World Australia has reached another major milestone. The three terminals, Sydney, Fremantle and Melbourne, utilized automated testing to complete three Navis N4 terminal operating system (TOS) upgrades in rapid succession, further standardizing and centralizing DP World Australia’s technology platform. “We are committed to evolving the technology used at our terminals. N4 version 2.4.7 allows us to manage terminal operations more effectively and productively and as a result, provides a greater level of reliability to our customers,” said Richard Johnstone, Director of Business Systems Solutions at DP World Australia.

New LMS 3D Simulation Offers Real-world Tech

LMS, recently acquired by Siemens and now a business segment within Siemens PLM Software, announced the latest release of its LMS 3D solutions for real world simulation, LMS Virtual. Lab Rev 12 and SAMCEF Rev 15. Both software releases use innovative technology to simulate real-world behavior for faster, more realistic and easier product design. Every LMS 3D simulation solution can be tailored to precise industry and application requirements in areas such as acoustics and vibration, mechanisms, automotive and aerospace simulation process integration, structural analysis and wind turbine development. The latest releases of the two core LMS 3D simulation software suites, LMS Virtual.Lab and SAMCEF including CAESAM, address several of the industries’ most pressing engineering challenges.

Raytheon Advances Ship Computing

Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) achieved another in a series of milestones for the Zumwalt-class destroyer program with the successful Total Ship Computing Environment (TSCE) Release 6 software specifications review. Zumwalt’s TSCE is an advanced, open systems architecture that provides a scalable platform for cost-efficient delivery of new mission capability while capitalizing on the reuse of millions of lines of code from existing Navy programs. The system delivers a new level of Mission Systems Integration and automation. As such, it is a primary driver for the 60 percent reduction in manning for the Zumwalt-class destroyer versus the requirement for today’s Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.

Globe Wireless Releases Rydex V8

Globe Wireless announced the availability of a new version of the Rydex software. Now branded GlobeRydex, the software is a ship/shore satellite communications solution for the maritime industry. Customers use the GlobeRydex software either through the public hub environment (a service where ships connect to a shoreside hub managed by Globe Wireless) or a private hub configuration (where the shoreside server is kept and maintained at the customer’s premises). “In past years Rydex has seen only minimal software updates. It was in need of enhancements and maintenance.” commented Shane Rossbacher, Vice President of Product Management with Globe Wireless.
