For some years now, the maritime sector has experienced breaches of various computer and information technology (IT) systems. Primarily, these breaches have been collateral damage. The maritime sector has almost never been the intended target. That does not mean that the damage has been minor. In June 2017, A.P. Moller-Maersk suffered a major cyber-attack. The malware had been designed by Russian hackers to disrupt the Ukrainian power sector. Iranian Maritime Knowledge Hub to Open

The Iranian Maritime Industry Knowledge Hub will be soon opened up and ready to use by public in the area of shipping and offshore industry. Mitsubishi Super Skiving System

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has completed development of the "Mitsubishi Super Skiving System" for machining internal gears with high speed and outstanding precision. The new system has overcome technical issues characteristic of conventional skiving by use of an MHI developed, innovative barrel-shaped multiple-cutting-edge rotary tool (patent pending), enabling mass production of difficult-to-machine internal gears. In addition, longer tool life, combined with shorter machining times, enables significant reductions in production costs. MHI is aiming to commence marketing of the new tool and dedicated skiving machine in April, 2015.

ClassNK Update Design Support Tool for EEDI Verification

Classification society ClassNK has released the latest version of its PrimeShip-GREEN/MinPower software. The software was originally developed by ClassNK and released in April 2014 to help shipyards comply with amendments to MARPOL Annex VI, specifically EEDI requirements, by calculating minimum propulsion power requirements in compliance with the IMO 2013 INTERIM GUIDELINES FOR DETERMINING MINIMUM PROPULSION POWER TO MAINTAIN THE MANOEUVRABILITY OF SHIPS IN ADVERSE CONDITIONS.

Hamworthy PUMP-FLO Electronic Catalogs

PUMP-FLO Solutions, a provider of software solutions to the fluid handling industry, announced that Hamworthy, a high technology marine pump manufacturer, has chosen PUMP-FLO Solutions to create an electronic pump catalog for use in the PIPE-FLO system design software and PUMP-FLO selection software. Under terms of the agreement, Hamworthy has chosen to make available their centrifugal pump line catalog to the PUMP-FLO and Engineered Software user-base through the Engineered Software website. Hamworthy, headquartered in Poole (UK), serves not only the marine industry but also gas & oil and has branched out into general industrial as well.
