BIMCO, CIRM Propose Software Maintenance Standard for Shipping

BIMCO and the international association for the marine electronics industry, CIRM (Comité International Radio-Maritime), have sent the industry’s first proposal for an industry-wide standard for software maintenance to the IMO for consideration. Without an industry-standard, BIMCO sees an increasing risk of severe incidents on ships, delays and costs to shipowners and cyber security problems. Kongsberg Upgrades Software for Norden

Kongsberg Maritime has delivered new fleet and vessel management functionality through a recent customized software update across Dampskibsselskabet NORDEN A/S’ fleet and shore offices. The software roll-out took place during January 2016 and included updates to vessel and shore based modules covering maintenance, spare parts, information sharing, procurement and budgeting. The updated software was developed in close co-operation with NORDEN, an independent Danish shipping company operating a large global fleet of dry cargo vessels and product tankers.

INTERSCHALT maritime systems AG, a provider of maritime software for cargo and fleet management, presented its solution for vessel performance monitoring, reporting and analysis software to industry professionals at the 5th International Conference on Ship Efficiency in Hamburg, Germany. The Bluetracker package from INTERSCHALT covers all the current requirements related to the efficiency management of a ship or entire fleet. Automatic data collection on board has been expanded to include Bluetracker[express], the integrated manual reporting solution.

Koden’s CVS-FX Echosounder Compatible with Olex

Koden Electronics Co., Ltd. announced that its CVS-FX series echosounders (CVS-FX1, CVS-FX2 & CVS-FX2BB) are now fully compatible with the Olex 3D navigation system. Koden’s CVS-FX series is a frequency selectable digital broadband echosounder. Olex is a unique system for navigation, fishery plotting and ocean mapping, developed and manufactured by the Norwegian company Olex AS. Using the ships own echosounder and GPS the Olex creates a continually updated depth/position database which is used to produce a realistic 3D seabed view.

And while the coastal view remained picturesque, the ensuing years brought change. The company, founded by Marcel Février, is now dedicated to precision engineering and boilermaking. In 2005, upon Février’s retirement, experienced precision engineer Franck Vincent took on management of the company. Upon taking up the reins of Armor Mécanique, Vincent found that he had quite a lot on his plate.

Furuno Debuts Remote Controller and Software

When Furuno added its Black Box system to their NavNet TZtouch family, it provided flexibility for captains that wanted a TZtouch system on larger displays. Shortly after that, Furuno introduced its new line of Multi-touch Marine Monitors that ranged in size from 17-24 inches. Customers then came back to Furuno requesting the added flexibility of viewing and controlling their TZtouch displays from a remote position. While Furuno offers its free “NavNet Remote” app for the iPad, some customers feel there is no substitute for buttons and tactile control.

Napa Releases New Software Version

One of the main areas of focus has been the development of new tools for probabilistic damage stability calculations. This development work will be relevant to the new SOLAS 2009 regulations coming into effect early next year. The new release has the capability to check compliance with SOLAS 2009 regarding damage stability. In damage generation, for instance, can now handle the complexity caused by A-class bulkheads. Furthermore, the horizontal escape routes can be now modeled and are taken into account in the calculations. In addition, much development work has been done to make it easier to use these features; to this end, a new user interface has been introduced, in the form of a NAPA Manager.

Submarines Move to Electronic Nav Charting

The Navy's Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) certified a significant milestone in the submarine force's transition to electronic charting by approving version 8.3 of the Voyage Management System (VMS) for use aboard attack and guided-missile submarines June 9. For submarine installations VMS is tested and certified by engineers from Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Port Hueneme, Virginia Beach detachment. This latest software version enhances submarines' abilities to navigate in extreme northern latitudes and conduct under-the-ice operations.
