The company operates a fleet of seven tugboats off the UK’s south coast, two of which use Cat engines. Several vessels in Solent Towage’s fleet are chartered for 186 days per year by the operator of a large oil refinery in the area, according to the charter, fuel consumed by the STL fleet is provided by the refinery.

Solent Towage Ltd (STL), the UK arm of Norwegian marine services company, Ostensjo Rederi AS, has saved over 60-man hours since December 2013 by installing gplink, the remote monitoring and tracking solution from Finning Power Systems (Finning) for Cat® engines. The company, which operates a fleet of seven tugboats off the UK’s south coast, two of which use Cat engines, became the first commercial Finning customer in the UK to use gplink. Solent Contracts Damen for Two Stan Tugs
Damen Shipyards Group has been contracted for a STu1205 and a STu1606 for Solent Towage at the U.K’s Seawork International exhibition. The vessels will be delivered by October 1, 2013 and deployed for work on Exxon at the Fawley Oil Refinery, on Southampton Water. Solent Towage has owned a Damen vessel for 18 years, which has clocked up 36,000 engine hours. Robert Allan Designed M.V. Vortex
Solent Towage Ltd. of Southampton, UK, a division of Østensjø Rederi AS of Haugesund, Norway recently took delivery of their latest high-performance tug from Astilleros Gondan SA. The aptly-named Vortex is designated as an AVT 37/80 Class, and is the latest of the AVT series of Voith-powered escort tug designs from Robert Allan Ltd., Naval Architects of Vancouver BC. The Vortex was designed to perform a wide range of tasks, including: ship-handling, tanker escort, ocean towing, salvage and anchor handling duties.
Inchape Acquires FMS
Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS) has fully acquired Fawley-based agency Furness Marine Services Ltd (FMS), the second major acquisition it has completed in 2004. ISS is now 12 months into its two-year plan to double the size of its business through organic growth and strategic acquisitions. Following last month’s acquisition of the Ancon depot facility in the Port of Antwerp and several mergers and acquisitions completed in 2003, that plan is well on schedule to be met or exceeded within the expected timeframe. Independent shipping agency FMS was the result of a management buyout of Furness Withy Agency in 1993.
