Phoenix Express 2016 Concludes

Maritime forces from North Africa, Europe, and the United States concluded exercise Phoenix Express 2016 with closing ceremonies in Souda Bay, Greece May 27. Phoenix Express, sponsored and facilitated by U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), is designed to improve regional cooperation between partner nations, increase maritime domain awareness, information sharing practices, and operational capabilities to achieve safety and security in the Mediterranean Sea. Capt. Bryan Durkee, Commodore, Task Force (CTF) 67 stated, “Phoenix Express is a great opportunity for us to work operationally and tactically in the maritime for the safety and security in the Mediterranean. NATO Maritime Commander Visits IMO Antipiracy Training

NATO Maritime Commander Vice Admiral Peter Hudson, CBE Royal Navy, visited the two-week Advanced Maritime Law Enforcement/Training of Trainers course taking place at NATO Maritime Interdiction Operational Training Centre (NMIOTC), in Souda Bay, Crete, Greece. The course is being conducted from February 23 to March 6 under the auspices of the Djibouti Code of Conduct (DCoC) and the Djibouti Regional Training Centre with the support and supervision of the IMO Secretariat’s Kiruja Micheni, and benefits from the high NATO standards embraced by NMIOTC.

Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Visits Souda Bay

Adm. Mark Ferguson, commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa, visited U.S. Naval Support Activity (NSA) Souda Bay, his first visit since taking command in July. Ferguson visited Souda Bay to thank Sailors stationed there for supporting forward deployed naval forces and to strengthen the enduring partnership with Hellenic Navy counterparts. “You represent the United States Navy and the United States to the people of Crete and to Greece. I want to thank you for how you conduct yourselves and how you represent our country,” said Ferguson during an all hands call. During the all hands call, Ferguson imparted on Sailors the importance of their mission in Souda.

Divers Replace USS Taylor CPP Hub, Avoid Dry-Docking

The Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP) Hub of the 'USS Taylor' (FFG 50) was replaced underwater in Souda Bay, Greece, the warship having earlier suffered significant damage to its propeller blades while underway in the Black Sea, apprises Norfolk Ship Support Activity (NSSA). "NSSA RMC Quality Assurance (QA) Department dispatched Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) technicians overseas to perform an NDT examination of the Main Reduction Gear, to assess its capabilities after the sustaining damages," said NSSA Hydraulics and Ship's Controls Branch Head Richard Krewinghaus. USS Taylor to Enter Black Sea

The U.S. Navy reported that the Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate USS Taylor (FFG 50), homeported in Mayport, Fla., will enter the Black Sea April 22 to promote peace and stability in the region. The U.S. Navy routinely operates ships in the Black Sea consistent with the Montreux Convention and International Law. Taylor's mission is to reassure NATO allies of the U.S. Navy's commitment to strengthen and improve interoperability while working toward mutual goals in the region. Taylor recently completed repairs at Naval Support Activity Souda Bay, Greece.

Grounded Navy Ship Repaired, Returns to Fleet

The Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate USS Taylor (FFG 50), homeported in Mayport, Fla., successfully completed post-repair sea trials, April 21, the U.S. Navy reported. Taylor was operating in the Black Sea when she ran aground in Samsun, Turkey, Feb. 12, damaging the ship's propeller hub assembly. Taylor was towed to Naval Support Activity Souda Bay, to complete replacements of the propeller blades and hub. The Navy informs that the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer 'USS Truxtun' (DDG 103) has departed Souda Bay, Greece, en route to conduct combined training and theater security cooperation engagements in the Black Sea with Romanian and Bulgarian Naval forces. The visit of the warship to waters in the vicinity of the troubled Ukraine/Crimea region was scheduled in advance the Navy explains in a news release. Royal Naval survey ship 'HMS Enterprise' discovers two previously uncharted wrecks in Port Rashid Harbour. Four U.S. Ships to Participate in Phoenix Express 08

Four U.S. Navy ships will participate in Phoenix Express 2008 (PE 08), a U.S.-hosted, multinational exercise designed to strengthen regional maritime partnerships and foster the ability to operate jointly, from April 8-22. Two ships from the Nassau Expeditionary Strike Group, the USS Nassau (LHA 4) and the USS Nashville (LPD 13); along with the USS John L. Hall (FFG 32) and USNS Patuxent (T-AO 201) will represent the United States in this two-week exercise. Twelve other nations were also invited to participate or send representatives, to include , , , , , , , , , , and . A comprehensive and robust training agenda will provide participants with numerous opportunities to operate together and develop productive relationships.

USS Yorktown Returns to Pascagoula, Completes Final Deployment

USS Yorktown (CG 48) will return home to Naval Station Pascagoula Aug. 17, after a successful six-month deployment with the USS Wasp (LHD 1) Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) 2. Yorktown made key contributions to Operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, and Market Time II in support of the global war on terrorism. The ship, with embarked Helicopter Squadron Light (HSL) 42 Det. 2 from Mayport, Fla., set sail Feb. 17 from Pascagoula, and rendezvoused with the rest of the strike group off the coast of North Carolina three days later.

Shreveport Making Final Cruise After 37 Years Of Service

Coast Guard Unit Returns From Iraq

The more than 100 members of Coast Guard Port Security Unit 305 (PSU 305) based at Ft. Eustis, Va., who were assigned under the European Combatant Commander for Operation Iraqi Freedom, will return home late Tuesday night. PSU 305 was deployed as part of a Master Plan, which included the deployment of extensive military equipment and more than 300,000 soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coastguardsmen. Port Security Unit members are trained to provide waterborne and limited land-based protection for shipping and critical port facilities throughout the world. At the height of Operation Enduring Freedom, more than 100 PSU 305 personnel were deployed.
