DSME Delivers Newbuild LNG Carrier to Nakilat

Qatar-based shipping company Nakilat said Monday it has taken delivery of a newbuild liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier Global Star built by South Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME).The 173,400 cubic meter capacity Global Star will be commercially and technically managed in-house by Nakilat. It is the second out of the four LNG carrier newbuilds to be delivered to Global Shipping Co. Ltd., a joint venture of Nakilat (60%) and Maran Ventures Inc. (Maran Ventures) (40%).The series' first newbuild, Global Energy, was delivered in May 2020.

Wärtsilä: Maintenance Pact for Viking Grace

Wärtsilä and Viking Line signed an Optimized Maintenance agreement for the Wärtsilä LNGPac system onboard passenger ferry Viking Grace, significant in that it is the first Optimized Maintenance agreement ever made for Wärtsilä LNGPac, a complete gas handling system for ships fueled by liquefied natural gas (LNG). Viking Grace was the first passenger ferry to useLNG as a fuel source. The agreement also includes Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) and online support for the Wärtsilä LNGPac system.

NASSCO to Build Seabulk Jones Act Tankship, Plus Option

General Dynamics NASSCO, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics, has entered into a contract with Seabulk Tankers, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of SEACOR Holdings Inc. for the design and construction of a 50,000 deadweight ton LNG-conversion-ready product carrier with a 330,000 barrel cargo capacity, plus an option for one additional vessel. Construction is due to begin in 2015, with delivery scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2016. This new tanker will be constructed at the NASSCO shipyard in San Diego, meeting the Jones Act requirement that ships carrying cargo between U.S.

Clean Marine’s EGCS First to Operate Inside ECA

MV Balder, equipped with Exhaust Gas Cleaning System (EGCS) from Clean Marine, is reported to be the first vessel in the world to operate this type of system in the U.S. Emission Control Area (ECA). Upon arrival in Baltimore recently, the vessel’s Master sought approval from the coast guard to enter and exit the ECA Zone using High Sulfur Fuel Oil with EGCS, rather than burning the more expensive Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (1% sulfur content). APT Contracts NASSCO to Build Four Tankers

American Shipbuilder General Dynamics NASSCO, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics, announced that it has entered into a contract with an affiliate of American Petroleum Tankers (APT), a company majority owned by funds managed by Blackstone on behalf of its investors, for the design and construction of four 50,000 deadweight ton LNG-conversion-ready product carriers with a 330,000 barrel cargo capacity. ATC Wins Navy Business

American Technology Corp. (ATC) will participate with Bath Iron Works (BIW), a General Dynamics Company in a contract awarded by the U.S. Navy's SMART CARRIER program to Bath Iron Works. ATC and BIW will provide Superior Sound Technology installations in difficult audio communications areas. ATC also announced a separate project with Bath Iron Works for Ship's Force protection. Both projects are expected to bring approximately $175,000 in revenue to ATC over the next five months. Under the U.S. Navy contract, ATC will provide several NeoPlanar(TM) speakers and hardware as well as consulting services. The Navy's objective is to improve audio clarity and intelligibility of communications over shipboard address systems and to achieve other advantages inherent in ATC's NeoPlanar technology.

Cruise Industry News Briefs

Following extensive dock trials, Royal Caribbean's 88,000-gt Radiance of the Seas departed the covered building dock at Meyer Werft's Papenburg shipyard. The vessel was then towed to the fitting-out quay for further completion of the interior, precedent to its sea trials, which are scheduled for January. The first of a four-part vessel series built by Meyer Werft for RCCL, Radiance of the Seas measures 962 ft. (293.2 m) with a breadth of 106 ft. (32.2 m). With its top service speed of more than 24 knots, the vessel can accommodate up to 2,500 passengers in 1,050 cabins; 850 crewmembers. Propelled via two 20 MW azipods, the vessel is the first of its kind to house a combination gas and steam turbine power package. The vessel is scheduled for a spring 2001 delivery.

Michigan to Regulate Ballast Water Discharges

The State of Michigan enacted two laws intended to regulate discharges in the state of ballast water from ocean-going ships. Act No. 32 broadly prohibits injurious discharges and specifically prohibits unauthorized discharges of ballast water from oceangoing ships. Act No. 33 provides that, effective January 1, 2007, an ocean-going ship may not engage in port operations in the state unless it has a permit and that, to obtain a permit, the ship must demonstrate either that it will not discharge aquatic nuisance species or that it will utilize environmentally sound technology and methods to prevent such discharges. GE Celebrates Cruise Milestone

GE Marine Engines' LM aeroderivative gas turbines made a splash in the cruise industry in 2002. As this year comes to an end, several milestones including sea trials, maiden voyages and equipment deliveries are occurring.
