DNV GL, SGN Join Forces to Deliver Innovative project

Following a successful Network Innovation Competition bid in 2015, DNV GL has secured innovation funding from SGN to partner in a project to demonstrate the viability and practical reality of a mixed-source, energy-centric gas network for the future. The project was developed, and will be delivered, in partnership with SGN who are one of the UK's key gas distribution operators, and industry leaders in innovation. The integrated energy network of the future must be flexible, secure, cost effective and above all safe. The changing gas industry, driven by a reduced North Sea supply is increasingly required to accommodate gas from more diverse sources such as biomethane and shale gas.

Rigdon to Remain in New Orleans

GulfMark Offshore’s previously announced agreement to purchase Rigdon Marine entails that the combined company will operate 90 vessels, with 16 more under construction for delivery through 2010. Houston-based GulfMark has minimal operations, making the retention of Rigdon Marine's GoM presence significant, Energy Current reported. Cosco to Grow Offshore and Shipbuilding Business

Cosco Corp. Singapore Ltd. aims to draw one third of its business each from ship repairs and conversion, new shipbuilding and offshore marine engineering services. The three key businesses contribute $481.2m or 91 percent of the company's $528.8m revenue during the January to March quarter, Energy Current reported. Of the total revenue from the three key business segments, 21 per cent comes from ship repairs contracts, half of its 42 per cent share last year. The smaller revenue share from ship repairs business is in line with Cosco's move to secure higher value contracts in new shipbuilding and offshore marine engineering services, Cosco Vice Chairman and President Ji Hai Sheng said during a press briefing in .

Oregon LNG Completes Navigation, Docking Simulation

Oregon LNG completed a navigation and docking simulation for three liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker sizes at the Pacific Marine Institute in Seattle, Wash. The company says the simulation demonstrates that its proposed LNG site on the Skipanon Peninsula in Warrenton, Ore., can accommodate the 148,000 cubic meter (5.2 MMcf), 216,000 cubic meter (7.6 MMcf), or Q-Flex tanker, and the 266,000 cubic meter (9.4 MMcf) Q-Max tankers. The Oregon LNG project is undergoing permitting processes with the U.S. Coast Guard and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Oregon LNG expects those permits to be issued by early 2009 and expects to begin natural gas deliveries by late 2012.

Argentina’s Offshore Oil Hopes

Celebrations will be bittersweet this month when Argentina commemorates its hundredth year of oil production. Although the industry has served Argentina well since oil was first discovered in December 1907, reserves and production have been falling since output peaked at 890,000 barrels per day back in 1998. While pessimists say the decline is irreversible as the prolific Neuquen and Golfo San Jorge onshore basins are declining, a number of industry experts – not to mention government planners – believe the country’s untapped offshore potential could boost the industry to new highs. Fire Reported on Shell Facility

A small fire broke out on Shell's North Cormorant platform, which was quickly extinguished. Reports indicated that there was no need for any of the 106 staff to be evacuated from the North Sea facility. The blaze in the turbine hood of a water injection pipe comes just three days after 113 staff had to be taken off the Petrofac-run Thistle Alpha platform, which suffered a three level fire on Sunday morning. Problems arose on North Cormorant, which is 109 miles northeast of Shetland but the platform's fire protection system sprung into action, and normal service resumed just 15 minutes later. Reports said that Shell will send a team out to probe the incident, and the UK's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) will investigate. Source: Energy Current

Höegh teams with Aker Yards, ABB Lummus

Höegh LNG entered agreements with Aker Yards and ABB Lummus Global and started the engineering and design for its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) unit. The proposed project will consist of a ship-shaped FPSO with the capacity to treat and liquefy a well stream of approximately 88.2 Bcf/year, or annual production of approximately 1.6 million tons of LNG and approximately 500,000 tons of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The LNG FPSO will have storage capacity of 6.4 MMcf of LNG and 1.1 MMcf of LPG. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in mid-2011. Höegh LNG will manage the pre-front end engineering and design (FEED) phase, with Aker Yards performing work on the FPSO hull, containment and utility systems.

BP to Invest $37b in Energy Projects

Energy Watch has reported that BP said it plans to invest a total of some $37 billion in U.S. energy projects to explore, produce and process more oil and natural gas. Under its program, BP will spend $16 billion over the next decade on oil and natural gas exploration and production in U.S. deep waters in the Gulf of Mexico, said company officials. The company is also looking to invest $17 billion over the same period on U.S. onshore oil and gas development in the Rockies and elsewhere, while spending some $3 billion in refinery upgrades to process more heavy oil from the north. GEO Shipyard Delivers Seismic Vessel

As noted elsewhere in this issue, evidence abounds of a pickup in oil and gas exploration, drilling and production. The latest example is the delivery of a seismic vessel to a company that was incorporated in 2003 specifically for geophysical work. The company is Global Geophysical Services, Inc., of Houston, Texas. The company went to Geo Shipyard, New Iberia, La. for a 70 x 22-ft. catamaran-style seismic source vessel. "In the past, we specialized in seismic boats and our company name is derived from our concentration on geophysical vessels," said David LeCompte, president of the company. The vessel is equipped with a pair of large compressors enabling it to operate air guns that gather seismic data from the Gulf of Mexico.
