Steel Cut for UK's New Warship HMS Belfast

A steel cutting ceremony was held for the U.K. Royal Navy's third Type 26 frigate, HMS Belfast, with all three of the first batch of City Class frigates now under construction.Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, set the plasma cutting machine to work on the first plate of steel at BAE Systems’ shipyard in Glasgow. Ørsted, Eversource to Charter U.S. First Jones Act-Compliant Offshore Wind Turbine Installation Vessel

Offshore wind developersØrsted and Eversource have agreed to charter Dominion Energy's Charybdis, the first Jones Act-compliant offshore wind turbine installation vessel in the United States, for the construction of two offshore wind farms in the Northeast.Charybdis is being built in Texas by Keppel AmFels and will first be deployed out of New London harbor to support the construction of Revolution Wind and Sunrise Wind offshore wind farms, both of which are being developed jointly by Ørsted and Eversource.

Fussey Engineering Backs Hornsea 2

Siemens Energy has selected UK-based Fussey Engineering to supply and install steel framework and cladding at the National Grid 400kV substation site adjacent to the Hornsea Two offshore wind project.The steelworks, which will involve the construction of an annex building adjoining the National Grid substation, includes around 30 tonnes of locally sourced steel.With headquarters located less than a mile away from the new onshore substation in Lincolnshire, Fussey Engineering have worked all over the country, supplying a plethora of projects with steel fabrication.Michael Fussey, Director of Fussey Engineering said: “Here at Fussey Engineering we are proud to be involved in this small part in creating what is to be the largest offshore wind farm in the world.

Huntington Ingalls Says Steel Tariffs Won't Raise Prices for Now

Huntington Ingalls Industries, the largest shipbuilder for the U.S. government, said new tariffs on steel and aluminum should not impact the price of its own shipbuilding in the near-term, but does not know if tariffs will raise prices for its suppliers. Huntington's Newport News Shipbuilding yard in Virginia has a multi-year financial agreement that guarantees steady pricing for its steel, known as a hedge, Jennifer Boykin, president of Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, Virginia, told reporters on Tuesday at the Sea Air Space Exposition in National Harbor, Maryland.

Economou Backs $300m Green Recycling Initiative

George Economou and broking house Banchero and Costa Spa have both invested in the Green Recycling Initiative launched two weeks ago. The $300m GRI aims to integrate the needs of steel producers to be able to produce ethically sourced steel from traceable scrap and the needs of shipowners to recycle ships in a more environmentally friendly manner. The launch investors were Italy-based Siba Ships and Netherlands-based Seaarland Shipping Management. The Green Recycling Initiative (GRI) is building a fund to buy around 120 obsolete ships during 2009/10. Investors will be drawn from both the shipping and steelmaking industries. It will begin…

ABS Creates Black Sea Technical Advisory Committee

More than 40 representatives from the shipping industry attended the inaugural meeting of the ABS Black Sea Technical Advisory Committee in Istanbul last week. The invitational Committee is formed from a wide range of senior representatives drawn from shipowners, shipbuilders, designers, vendors and academic and industry organizations domiciled in Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria and Ukraine. ABS maintains an extensive global technical committee structure which provides a forum for industry and the class society to exchange research and ideas that guide the refinement of the existing ABS Rules and provide guidance on future areas of technical research and standards development supportive of industry needs.
