Fire at Brazil's Rumo Sugar Terminal Disrupts Operations

A fire at the Rumo sugar and grain terminal in Brazil's Santos port that started early Thursday restricted operations but caused no injuries, according to a spokesman for the company controlled by sugar and ethanol producer Cosan SA. The blaze broke out around 4 a.m. local time (0700 GMT) and the company expects to resume normal operations by midday Thursday, the spokesman said. The fire started at a conveyor belt which connects two of Rumo's warehouse complexes and was controlled within an hour, after loading and unloading were temporarily suspended. News of the incident in the world's biggest sugar producing nation triggered a more than 4 percent rally in sugar prices . Futures have pared back some early gains but are still trading up 2.5 percent at 11:00 a.m. local time.

NYK to Launch Car Carrier Service from Canaveral

NYK will begin car carrier transport service from Port Canaveral to Central and South Americas, starting October 10, 2015. The first vessel will be the MV Neptune Leader V 65. “With the relatively short trucking distance between Port Canaveral and the numerous auto and heavy equipment auctions located in Central Florida, the NYK service will provide area businesses with cost-effective options and positions us competitively with other Florida seaports,” said Alberto Cabrera, Port Canaveral’s Senior Director of Cargo Business Development. NORDANA Nominates Rickmers as General Agent in Japan

NORDANA Project and Chartering (NPC) and Rickmers (Japan) Inc. announced jointly that Rickmers (Japan) Inc. was nominated as sole General Agent of NORDANA Project and Chartering in Japan effective from June 15, 2015. NORDANA’s name is taken from its NORwegian and DANish background. The company started business in 1957 and its Asian Head Office is located in Thailand. Nordana is part of the Weco Group which consists of amongst others tankers (StenaWeco), RoRos, a bulk division and multipurpose tweendeckers. Weco Group operates more than 90 vessels and is a privately owned company. Liebherr Wins Significant Ship Crane Order

Liebherr reports that there has been a positive trend in the heavy lift crane segement, a sentiment confirmed by a number of significant contracts recorded of late, including a contract for the delivery of six heavy lift ship cranes for the German shipping company Rickmers. Four of the heavy lift cranes are type CBB 4700 with a lifting capacity of 450 tons and the remaining two are type CBB 3450 with a lifting capacity of 120 tons. The six heavy lift cranes are being built by Liebherr-MCCtec Rostock GmbH and will be delivered in 2014.

Gulftainer Group Looks Beyond Middle East

Peter Richards, Gulftainer Group Managing Director, estimates that the expansion of latest deals will thrust Gulftainer into the world's exclusive group of top port operators. He says Khorfakkan Container Terminal (KCT) has topped industry productivity rankings for the past five years, and that both it and Mina Khalid are used as industry benchmarks by shipping lines. The UAE's largest private port operator has dramatic plans, which could "virtually double the size" of the company Richards believes.
