Unique Group Acquires APAC Marine Unit

Integrated marine and subsea solutions provider Unique Group has announced the acquisition of the Australian-company Western Advance’s Marine Division.The provider of services and solutions for the offshore, subsea and life support industries also announced the appointment of Chris Forde as its new regional vice-president.Western Advance’s integration with Unique Group ties in with the Group’s strategy to enhance its portfolio of autonomous solutions for marine, offshore and subsea industry operations in the region.Harry Gandhi, chief executive officer at Unique Group, said: “Over the years, Unique Group has built a strong presence in APAC offering survey equipment, buoyancy and ballast, diving and life support and on-site engineering products and services to our customers.

Australia Opens Up Opportunities for UK Shipping

A major investment in new frigates and submarines by the Australian government has created long-term opportunities for UK and European businesses with relevant intellectual property and expertise, said Moore Stephens. This summer the Australian government awarded UK firm BAE Systems a contract to build nine next-generation frigates – known as the ‘Future Frigates’ project – worth A$35 billion, said a research report written by Moore Stephens' Michael Simms & Grant Miles.The programme, which will run for over 20 years, will create around 4,000 direct Australian jobs and give a particular boost to South Australia and the shipyards of Port Adelaide. Construction of the frigates is scheduled to begin in Adelaide from 2020, with the first vessels delivered in 2027 and the last by 2042.

Ace Targets Inland Waterways

Overhead crane and hoist manufacturer Ace World Companies has made its first appearance at the Inland Marine Expo, which took place for the third time this May at America’s Center Convention Complex in St. Louis, Missouri, on the banks of the Mississippi River. The expo is the annual trade show for the inland and intracoastal marine transportation industry, which is a target market for the manufacturer and its recently acquired business, Pullift Corporation, a provider of standard and custom material handling equipment, including winches. Camron Ghanemi, vice president at Ace, said, “I was encouraged by recent comments from Michael Toohey, the president of the Waterways Council, who referenced ‘record funding’ to modernize the nation’s inland waterways transportation system.

Hempel Opens its First Factory in Africa

Hempel has opened its first factory in Africa, its 26th worldwide, to manufacture coatings for the marine as well as decorative and protective industries to serve customers in Sub-Saharan Africa. Further boosting its growth plans, Hempel acquired its South African toll manufacturer, The Coatings Manufacturing Company (TCMC). Since 2011, Hempel South Africa has partnered with TCMC, which is located close to Johannesburg, to better serve customers in the region; the partnership covered the HEMPATEX and HEMPALIN range of products.

Safely, efficiently lifting and handling increasingly heavy loads takes a hefty dose of the latest heavy lift products and systems. Rolls-Royce is a ubiquitous and growing force in all matters maritime, inching toward the one-stop-shop premise. It is particularly well known in the deck machinery sector, and it recently signed a deal with Detroit Chile SA to supply offshore cranes to nine PSVs under construction at Detroit Brasil Ltda. shipyard, in Itajaì, Brazil. The order includes nine ship sets of the dual draglink crane, making 18 cranes in total.

Hempel Acquires Schaepman

Hempel has acquired Schaepman’s Lakfabrieken B.V, a Dutch supplier of specialized industrial, protective and decorative coatings. The acquisition is part of Hempel’s five-year growth strategy. Terms of the sale are undisclosed. According to Hempel , the acquisition will enable the company to benefit from Schaepman's expertise in protective coatings. Addtionally, existing Schaepman customers will gain access to Hempel's range of products and global support. Hempel's global presence will also ensure Schaepman's specialist products are available to a wider customer base. Hempel’s Group President and CEO Pierre-Yves Jullien, said, “We are focused on developing or acquiring new solutions that add real benefits to our customers. Durastic Supplies North Sea Oil Platform in Korea

Marine flooring manufacturer Durastic has supplied a range of its specialist products to Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea to help build a major new North Sea oil platform for BP. Durastic, which has sites in Liverpool, Jarrow and Southampton, U.K., has supplied underlay and floor coverings along with other material and fittings for the new BP Quad 204 platform being built in South Korea and also a platform for BP’s £4.5 billion Clair Ridge oilfield near the Shetland Islands.
