MAN and ABB Partner on Dual-fuel Electric Propulsion

Engine manufacturer MAN Energy Solutions and technology company ABB will work together to develop a dual-fuel electric plant concept for liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, engineered as part of the companies' efforts to help the international shipping industry reduce its emissions footprint.Under a Memorandum of Understanding, signed at September’s SMM trade show in Hamburg, the two companies will develop a Dual-Fuel, Electric+ (DFE+) propulsion system concept based on MAN’s new 49/60DF four stroke engine and ABB’s Dynamic AC (DAC) power distribution and control system.

Fairbanks Morse Ships USS Cleveland (LCS 31) Engines

Fairbanks Morse Engine (FME), a division of Fairbanks Morse Defense (FMD), shipped two 16-cylinder Fairbanks Morse engines to Fincantieri Marinette Marine in Marinette, Wis., for the USS Cleveland (LCS 31), the 16th ship of the U.S. Navy's Freedom-class LCS variant.FME was awarded a contract in 2019 to build and deliver Main Propulsion Diesel Engines (MPDE's) for the vessel.FME has provided power and propulsion services to the U.S. Navy for more than 70 years and powers more than 80% of the Navy's ships with medium-speed applications.

Wärtsilä Upgrades Its 20DF Dual-fuel Engine

Wärtsilä introduced an upgraded version of its Wärtsilä 20DF dual-fuel engine that delivers increased power output, has a reduced environmental impact, and will feature a lower fuel consumption. It will also further increase the engine’s fuel flexibility by allowing a much wider gas quality span, down to methane number (MN) 65, while still delivering full output.The engine’s power per cylinder is increased from 185 to 195 kW, while the methane slip is lowered by as much as 40%, thereby reducing the CO2 emissions, according to the manufacturer.

Rolls-Royce and MAN Energy Solutions signed an agreement for a strategic partnership that will see MAN's PBST brand distribute mtu turbochargers. "With this cooperation, we are combining our competencies - on the one hand, PBST's global sales structure for turbochargers and, on the other hand, Rolls-Royce's latest high-efficiency mtu turbocharger technology for high-speed diesel and gas engines," explains Andreas Schell, CEO of Rolls-Royce Power Systems. The turbochargers developed and produced in-house by Rolls-Royce Power Systems will be made available in additional markets.

Polymer Inhibits Galvanic Corrosion on Foil Supported Cats

Vesconite is typically found on a boat as a strut or rudder bearing material, but yacht designer Scott Jutson of Jutson Marine Design has a unique application for it. He specifies the advanced polymer as a corrosion isolator on his aluminum Hysucat (hydrofoil supported catamaran) designs. Jutson uses 3mm sheets of Vesconite as an interface between SAF 2205 stainless steel hydrofoils and the aluminum hulls they're bolted to. The isolator inhibits galvanic corrosion between the dissimilar metals.

MJP Introduces Hybrid Waterject

Marine Jet Power (MJP) introduced a new product concept that is optimized for high-speed applications. According to MJP, the new hybrid waterjet combines the best characteristics of the MJP DRB series with the Ultrajet series. MJP said the idea to take the best from its DRB and Ultrajet series and make a Hybrid that is optimized for high-speed applications came soon after MJP’s merger with Ultrajet. Caterpillar Marine and Cat Dealer Pon Power announced the first Cat 3512C marine generator sets with Dynamic Gas Blending (DGB) have been selected to power Assessoria Transporte Aquaviaro fast ferries for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A total of 28 Cat generator sets will be installed on seven aluminum-hull fast ferries, with 14x Cat 3512 generator sets and 14x Cat 9 generator sets providing prime and auxiliary power. Each 3512 generator set will provide 1,550 eKW at 60 Hz of rated power.

Caterpillar Marine with Cat Dealer Pon Power are pleased to announce the first Cat 3512C marine generator sets with Dynamic Gas Blending (DGB) have been selected to power Assessoria Transporte Aquaviaro fast ferries for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A total of 28 Cat generator sets will be installed on 7 aluminum-hull fast ferries, with 14x Cat 3512 generator sets and 14x Cat 9 generator sets providing prime and auxiliary power. Each 3512 generator set will provide 1550 eKW @ 60 Hz of rated power. One ferry will be equipped with the new Cat marine dual fuel solution and powered by compressed natural gas (CNG). The remaining six ferries are being constructed with the option to readily retrofit the engine room to include the Dynamic Gas Blending kits in the future.

Voith Announces First Linear Jet Order

A new propulsor for 20 to 40 knots with the simplicity and efficiency of a propeller. Voith has announced the first Voith Linear Jet order with Turbine Transfers UK for a 19 meter BMT Nigel Gee designed Wind Support Vessel. The Voith Linear Jet will provide for this application a substantial higher bollard pull without a requirement for increased installed power. This higher bollard pull will allow Turbine Transfers the safe transfer of personnel up to higher seastates. Turbine Transfers - a wholly owned subsidiary of Holyhead Towing Company - currently operates a fleet of over 20 fast catamarans that transport personnel and equipment to and from offshore wind turbines. Its long term customers include Siemens, RWE npower, Van Oord, Dong Energy, EnBW and Royal Boskalis Westminster.

Pick Your Power

The inherent diversity of the multitude of vessels plying rivers, lakes, harbors and oceans around the world extends past size and shape and type of service - at the heart of each vessel is a propulsion system. Although propulsion systems may often be considered unique, a variety of typical solutions for most types of vessels already exist. In some cases, it may be preferable to simply specify the duplication of an existing propulsion system, allowing a degree of harmonization in the number of required spares, trained mechanics, and maintenance. It would seem, however, that ship owners and operators are placing an increased premium on designs and solutions both unique and innovative, in order to reduce costs and maximize performance.
