Ship of the Month: Mercy Ships and the Quest to Build Global Mercy

Mercy Ships is known globally for its charitable work performing medical procedures in developing countries. For the first time, the organization has a new ship, Global Mercy, recently delivered from a shipyard in China. Shell Hires Velesto Energy for Malaysia Drilling

Velesto Energy was awarded a RM 101 million (USD 25 million) contract from Sarawak Shell Bhd (SSB) and Sabah Shell Petroleum Company Ltd (SSPC) for the provision of jack up drilling rig services.Velesto Energy was formerly known as UMW Oil & Gas Corp  and a wholly owned subsidiary Velesto Drilling Sdn Bhd (VED). DNV GL Rolls Out Electronic Certificates Across Entire Fleet

In a first for the ship classification industry, DNV GL has commenced the roll out of IMO compliant electronic class and statutory certificates across its entire fleet. The widespread use of electronic certificates will result in significant efficiency gains for ship owners, charterers, regulators and crew, cutting down administrative burdens, processing time and document handling costs. For the past few years, DNV GL has been working on pilot projects with several owners and flag administrations, to test and gain acceptance for the use of electronic certificates.

Spread of GE Tech Ordered for DSV Newbuild

Shanghai Salvage Bureau’s (SSB) new ship is purpose-designed for a range of roles including deep-water salvage operations, deep-water pipelay and construction as well as a saturation diving capability for up to 24 divers in two bells. Recently, GE’s Marine Solutions has been chosen by SSB, one of the largest rescue and salvage companies in the world, to provide a suite of marine technologies including power and propulsion equipment, dynamic positioning (DP) and automation and control systems to its newest deep-water dive support vessel (DSV).

Gladding-Hearn Delivers Fast Ferry to Hyline Cruises

Hy-Line Cruises, a division of Hyannis Harbor Tours, Inc., Hyannis, Mass., has taken delivery of Grey Lady IV, a new 493-passenger, high-speed catamaran from Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, the Duclos Corporation. The fourth Incat-Crowther fast ferry built by the Mass.-based shipyard for the Cape Cod passenger ferry company is larger and more stylish in design than previous vessels. Wärtsilä Designs Deepwater DSV for China

Wärtsilä has signed a contract with Shanghai Bestway Marine Engineering Design Co Ltd to design a new type of deepwater dive support vessel (DSV). The ship is to be built for China state-owned Shanghai Salvage Bureau (SSB), a professional salvage company in China. The contract with Wärtsilä was signed in January. The Wärtsilä design features a combination of capabilities, including deepwater (6,000 meters) salvage operations, deepwater pipe laying and construction work, and saturation (SAT) diving operations for 24 divers using two diving bells. SAT diving is a technique that allows divers to reduce the risk of decompression sickness when working at great depths for extended periods of time. All the design features are based on a single platform operating with DP3.

Evergreen Orders Ten Boxships

Evergreen Group signed an agreement with CSBC Corporation, Taiwan to build ten 2,800 TEU class B-type vessels. Witnessed by Evergreen Group's Second Vice Group Chairman Bronson Hsieh, the contracts were signed by EMC Chairman Anchor Chang and CSBC Chairman Sun-Quae Lai. The first ship will be delivered during the second half of 2017 with the completion of the series due by the first half of 2018. The vessels will be deployed in the intra-Asia trade. Bronson Hsieh said, "After the negotiations of Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) are concluded, the ASEAN countries, Australia, China, India, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand are expected to remove trade barriers, enhancing bilateral trades and thereby boosting regional cargo growth.

NMEA Updates Installation Standards

The National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) has published Edition 2014, Version 4.00 of the NMEA 0400 Installation Standard, which contains information on new technologies, updated sections and additional appendices. NMEA 0400 is a tool and reference guide for installing any piece of marine electronics equipment. Edition 2014, Version 4.00 includes two new sections—Black Box Installation and Cameras & Security Installation. Every section listed below was reviewed and updated by industry experts consisting of NMEA member manufacturers and NMEA accredited installers. Three new appendices were also added: NMEA 0183 Sentence Information, NMEA 2000 PGN Descriptions, and VHF/DSC Wiring Information.

Geo Shipyard Delivers Catamaran Survey Vessel

Geo Shipyard, Inc. has built and delivered a new Survey Catamaran Vessel, Blake, for David Evans and Associates Inc.’s Marine Services Division in Gulfport, Mississippi. The newbuild, delivered in October, features wave-piercing bows, Tier 3 Cat diesels, twin 55-kW generators, a full suite of survey instrumentation, an A frame for towing astern, a DTI survey winch and a stainless steel hydraulically operated survey strut with a moon pool and hydraulically operated door through the wing deck to lower the strut for side scanning. There’s also a bow crane for side scanning in shallow water.

First LNG-Powered Tugboat Sets Sails

M/T Borgøy, the world’s first tug to be fuelled by the much more environmentally friendly liquefied natural gas (LNG), designed by Norwegian Buksèr og Berging in-house team with the assistance of Marine Design AS in Norway, further developed by Sanmar’s modern shipyard in Istanbul, completed her sea trials successfully this month and started her maiden voyage to Norway on January 14. Tidewater PSV Named For New Orleans Native Cindy Brown

Platform supply vessel Cindy Brown Tide was delivered to offshore-service giant Tidewater on Oct. 24, and chartered to oil company BP in the Gulf of Mexico. The boat's namesake is someone missed by many. Bahtera Bahari Shipyard: The Next Generation

As with many businesses in Southeast Asia, the Bahtera Bahari Shipyard on Indonesia’s Batam Island is a family business. Although the present company was founded only recently, in 2005, the family’s association with the marine world of Indonesia extends back several decades. One of four children Ms. Tresya, the oldest of two sisters, has completed her training in program management in Australia. She is now a director of the company and involved in marketing and bringing modern management models to the shipyard as well as an extensive network of inter-related companies.

Hodson CEO of Electronic Navigation Ltd

The board of directors of Electronic Navigation Limited (ENL) have announced the appointment of Gareth Hodson as Chief Executive Officer of the company effective from 10 December 2010. Hodson’s career with ENL has spanned nearly 20-years, with his most recent position being General Manager, New Zealand Sales and Service. ENL is a New Zealand distributor of marine electronics including advanced navigation and communication equipment for small pleasure craft through to super yachts, commercial vessels and Navy ships.

Washburn & Doughty Delivers Mary Ann Moran

On September 1, 2010, Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc. delivered the Mary Ann Moran, a 121 ft x 36 ft x 18 ft Intercon Tug, to Moran Towing Corporation. Designed by Ocean Tug & Barge Engineering Corp., Mary Ann Moran is the fourth vessel built by Washburn & Doughty to this design and delivered to Moran Towing. According to the vessel’s captain, Mr. Jake Jarrell, “I can say that this boat is by far one of the best vessels I have ever had the pleasure of working on in over 30 years in the industry.

Damen Delivers Tug to Sea Ports Corp.

In March 2004 the Damen Stan Tug 4511 Al Salaam was delivered from Damen Shipyards Galatz to the Owner’s Sea Ports Corporation (S.P.C.) Sudan. The Damen Stan Tug 4511 is the latest member of the Damen Stan Tug series. In 2003 two shorter versions, the Stan Tugs 4011, where delivered to an Owner in the Middle East. Al Salaam will operate at the Beshair SBM terminal south of Port Sudan, where it’s basic functions will be towing, berthing, fire fighting and pollution control. The tug is classified by Lloyd's Register of Shipping for Unrestricted Service.

Smit Orders Damen Stan Tug

Smit International awarded a contract to Damen Shipyards Gorinchem for the construction of a new terminal tug, a Damen Stan Tug 3509 for delivery end of this year under yard Nr. YN511606. Built as an enlarged Damen Stan Tug 2909 under standard rules of Bureau Veritas, the vessel will have an overall length of 35.3 m, a beam o.a. of 8.9 m, a draft of 4.3 m and a displacement of 420 tons with empty tanks. The twin screw tug will be powered by two Caterpillar 3516B TA/A main engines driving, via Reintjes WAF 872/7.087:1 gearbox, bronze Promarin fixed pitch propellors within 2,500 mm v.d. Giessen Kort nozzles. The total ouput will be 2950 kW (3959 bhp) at 1600 rpm. A bollard pull in excess of 52.8 tons is anticipated, with a free running speed of approximately 12.7 knots.

Damen Delivers Pair of Tugs

Damen Shipyards Gorinchem recently delivered a pair of Stan Tug 2608s – Ilha de Sao Luis and O Bravo (pictured) – in fulfilment of its contract with Adminstracao dos Portos, which was signed in June 2003. The vessels will built for operation in the Port of Horta and the Port of Praia da Vitoria. The first vessel was delivered in February 2004 and the second vessel in March 2004. The pair were built from stock hulls with the yard numbers 509805 and 509806. Both vessels will be used for mooring operations, coastal towing and fire fighting operations.

Vessels: Big Cat Express: A Very Fast Sea Trial

It's 8:30 a.m. as the Big Cat Express saddles up to the dock at the Port of Morgan City, La. It is Sea Trial day for the big quad engine catamaran ferry. No question she is waterjet powered as the tops of the blue "buckets" of the four Hamilton Jet 651's break the surface of the water at the stern. Just above the buckets are the exhausts, large four stainless steel pipes that curve downward toward the water. About 25 pickup trucks and my Ford Taurus wait the arrival of the 150-ft. by 34-ft. vessel. Painted gleaming white, the three-deck vessel looks like it was built for speed. Today we will find out just how fast it can travel. Emerging from the vehicles were several executives from Gulf Craft, Inc.

Marco Shipyard: Rolling With The Changes

Over their lifetime, fishing vessels are arguably the most robustly constructed maritime structures around, due to their continuous operation in the most arduous of conditions. Marco Shipyard in Seattle — founded in 1953 — built its business and reputation in the fishing industry, producing boats for operation around the globe. In fact, Peter G. Schmidt, company founder and president, was an innovator in the use of steel construction for the fishing vessel market, which previously consisted mostly of wooden boats.
