China Merchants Jinling Shipyard Built Asphalt Carrier Sports Schottel EcoPellers

A new bitumen tanker for Rubis Group of France is currently under construction at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard. The 15,000-dwt ship will be driven by twoSchottel EcoPellers and one TransverseThruster. Designed by Swedish FKAB Marine, the vessel will be deployed in West Africa for asphalt transportation services.The main propulsion of the carrier will include two electrically driven Schottel EcoPellers type SRE 560 (2,050 kW each), featuring fixed pitch 3.1m-diameter propellers. With this configuration, the 145.8 x 26.2-m ship will achieve a maximum speed of 13.55 knots at design draft.

Wind Power Breezes Back into Shipping with New RoRo Concept

Offshore Wind: SeaTwirl Secures Funding

Swedish floating wind turbine player SeaTwirl has joined the Ocean Energy Scale-Up Alliance (OESA) that has been granted funding from the Interreg North Sea Region.SeaTwirl is a vertical floating wind turbine that was tested off the west coast of Sweden in 2011. Methanol as an Alternative Fuel for Vessels

The Methanol Institute welcomed the findings of the Sustainable Marine Methanol (SUMMETH) project, which has backed the increased use of Methanol as a marine fuel. The research concluded that there are no obstacles to the efficient use of Methanol in a converted diesel engine and that smaller vessel conversion projects are feasible and cost-effective, with levels of safety that easily meet existing requirements. Switching to Methanol would offer immediate environmental benefits, including close to zero SOx and particulate matter emissions and significantly lower NOx emissions compared to conventional marine fuels or biodiesel. Designing the New National Security Multi-Mission Vessel

For more than 100 years the U.S. has depended on State Maritime Academies (SMA) to produce USCG licensed merchant officers. The SMA’s have also been an important source of U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard officers, as well as trained personnel for the maritime industry and electric power industries ashore. Key to training these future deck officers and engineers has been the annual sea cruise on dedicated training vessels. The current SMA training ships, all of which were built for other purposes and later converted to be training ships, are getting old.

Moving Ahead Powerfully

The layout of ship propellers is a balancing act between optimal power conversion and the avoidance of unwanted cavitation effects, which can result in damage to the propeller structure and higher noise levels. MAN Diesel & Turbo in Frederikshavn, Denmark, is using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation solution STAR-CCM+ from Siemens PLM Software to model cavitation and optimize ship propellers. Two mid-size container ships of 8,500 TEU – CSCL Europe and CSCL America – will be upgraded by retrofitting a efficient Kappel propeller.

First 100% Battery Powered Air Supported Vessel Launched

The result of a five-year-long EU project, the world’s fastest Air Supported Vessel (ASV), fully powered by lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS), has been launched at Latitude Yachts in Riga, Latvia. The new first of its kind vessel BB Green operates at a speed of 30 knots (56km/h) and holds up to 70 passengers plus bikes. It will initially be used for demonstration purposes across Europe. The ASV technology reduces water resistance by having the ship operate on an air cushion.

ESL Orders LNG-fueled Bulker following Transport Deal with SSAB

ESL Shipping Ltd and the steel company SSAB have signed a long-term frame agreement covering SSAB’s inbound raw material sea transports within the Baltic Sea and from the North Sea. The purpose of the agreement is to enable mutual, long-term gains in efficiency and to reduce overall logistics costs, while simultaneously making raw material logistics as sustainable and environmentally friendly as possible. At present, the aggregated sea transport volume covered by the agreement is estimated to be 6–7 million tons annually. Resulting from the agreement, ESL Shipping will order new, extremely energy-efficient LNG-fueled ships. These new, ice-class 1A ships will be the first LNG-fueled large bulk carriers in the world, representing the latest in technology and innovation.

Deltamarin to Designs First LNG Handysize Bulk Carriers

SHIPFLOW 6 comes with a new module for computing ship motions in waves and the SHIPFLOW RANS solver is up to 10 times faster than its predecessor. SHIPFLOW MOTIONS is a new flow solver for computing ship motions in waves. It is a time accurate fully nonlinear boundary element method which can be used to compute ship motions and added resistance in regular and irregular waves as well as wave resistance, sinkage and trim in calm water. Typical results are time series and response amplitude operators.

EU Funds Construction of BB Green Vessels

Under the 7th FRAMEWORK PROGRAM, EU is funding BB GREEN, an R&D project aiming at demonstrating feasibility of the first ever Air Supported Vessel (ASV) battery powered, fast commuter ferry. The 3 year project, initiated and coordinated by SES Europe AS (Norway), began with a kick-off meeting in Rotterdam in the end of June. Unique Ship Prototype in Gothenburg

The 49.2 ft long ship prototype Stena Airmax was named in Gothenburg. The prototype is part of a project in which an air cushion is being tested to investigate to what extent it reduces the friction between the hull and the water, thus also reducing fuel consumption and emissions of large tankers in the future. Stena will invest in the region of $6.8m in the project. Following the very good results achieved in tests with small ship models, Stena Teknik has developed this large-scale model weighing 25 tons. The same tests will now be carried out with the Stena Airmax.

Friede Goldman Halter, Inc. announced that it has recently finalized six new contracts with a total value of approximately $40 million. -The Venezuelan government for the construction of two 153-foot LCU-type logistics support vessels. USCG Icebreakers to Sport Finnish Technology

The new icebreakers for the U.S. Coast Guard being built at Marinette Marine Corp. will feature some of the world's most advanced icebreaking features, complements of Finland. Marinette Marine, a division of Manitowac Marine Group, has contracted with a pair of Kvaerner Masa-Yards Group Companies — Kvaerner Masa Marine (KMM) and Masa-Yards Arctic Technology Center (MARC) — to provide ice breaking consulting services and model testing for the new USCG Great Lakes Icebreaker Mackinaw. Named in honor of the heavy icebreaker that it is replacing, Mackinaw will be a multi-mission vessel, measuring 240 x 60 ft. (73 x 18.3 m), and it will displace 3,500 tons. The ship will break ice to keep the Great Lakes shipping lanes open in the winter and service aids to navigation in summer.

Acomarin and Hermasa Enter Agreement

ACOMARIN Engineering, Ltd. has entered into an agreement with HERMASA Navegacao da Amazonia S.A. of Brazil to supply them with three new Articulated Tug and Barge (ATB) Coupling Systems plus two additional socket plates for barges only. for retrofitting the tug “Aquarius” and the barge “Mir” designed after S.S.P.A. towing tank test. The other two sets plus the barge socket plates are for new construction. Tug Hull No. 1613 and 1614 and Barge Hull No. 1610, 1611, 1612, and 1615 will be built by ERIN Shipyards (ERIN- Estaleiros Rio Negro, Ltda.) in Manaus, Brazil. INTEROCEAN Engineering and Ship Management Ltda. of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil designed these new tugs and barges with ABS class certification. ERIN Shipyard will also do the installation of the ATB Coupling System.
