The proper lining of ballast tanks is essential and critical to ship safety. Not too many decades ago, ships traveling the North Atlantic routes were experiencing terrible losses from outright sinking in the turbulent seas. It was eventually discovered that the primary culprit was hull failure from ballast tanks rupturing from the inside out due to simple, plain old-fashioned rusting and galvanic corrosion. The U.S. Navy led the way and came up with a recommended formula, or recipe, for a ballast tank coating that paint manufactures could copy in bidding for Navy business.

Built in 1967 in San Diego, Calif., the M/V Kaleetan – which means “arrow” in Chinook – first went into service in early 1968 and was rebuilt in 2005.

PPG Industries’ protective and marine coatings (PMC) business inform they have received The Society of Protective Coatings (SSPC) 2014 Military Coatings Project Award of Excellence for the performance of AMERCOAT® 240 and PSX® 700SG coatings on the 'USS Freedom', the lead ship of the U.S. Navy’s littoral combat fleet. The award is given annually by SSPC to recognize exceptional coatings work performed on U.S. military ships, structures or facilities. Technip in a Joint Venture with MMHE awarded substantial contract for the Malikai Project in Malaysia. Technip in a joint venture with Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Sdn Bhd (MMHE) has been awarded a substantial contract by Sabah Shell Petroleum Company Ltd (SSPC) for the engineering, procurement and construction of a tension leg platform (TLP) for the TLP Malikai Deepwater Project. This TLP will be designed as a fully-manned platform to be installed 110 kilometers offshore Sabah, Malaysia, at a water depth of approximately 500 meters. It will weigh approximately 26,000 metric tonnes incorporating a topsides, which will have facilities to process 60,000 barrels of oil and 1.4 million cubic meters per day of gas, and a hull. The tendons will be fabricated in the U.S.

PPG earned recognition for the performance of PSX(R) ONE coating, a one-component acrylic-siloxane coating, applied to the exterior of the historic USS Iowa battleship. PSX ONE coating provides high color and gloss retention in a durable, low-VOC (volatile organic compound), non-isocyanate formulation.

Sherwin-Williams has launched Macropoxy® 80, a high-build HAPs-free epoxy coating formulated for application to marginally prepared and damp surfaces in marine and offshore applications. The coating combats steel corrosion caused by immersion in salt and fresh water, as well as from atmospheric exposures and can be applied at temperatures as low as 0o F (-18o C). A modified phenalkamine epoxy, Macropoxy 80 is recommended for use in coastal areas, salt and fresh water immersion, bilges and wet void areas, water and wastewater tanks, underwater hulls, and decks and superstructures. It can also be used as an anti-corrosive primer in an underwater hull system with anti-fouling coatings.

PPG PMC earned the recognition for the performance of its Amerlock 2/400 coating at the Deer Island Water Treatment Facility in Boston Harbor. The product, a fast-setting, high-solid epoxy coating, was applied to a gravity thickener at the plant, which is the second largest water treatment facility in the United States. The George Campbell Award is given for outstanding achievement in the completion of a difficult or complex industrial commercial coatings project.

SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings has published two new collections of surface preparation reference photographs: SSPC-VIS 4 and SSPC-VIS 5. SSPC-VIS 4 illustrates the appearances of steel surfaces prepared by waterjetting while SSPC-VIS 5 shows steel surfaces prepared by wet abrasive blast cleaning. Both contain a written guide and explanatory notes, as well as additional photographs that depict degrees of flash rust after cleaning. SSPC-VIS 4 and SSPC-VIS 5 were developed in collaboration with NACE International under the direction of the SSPC/NACE Joint Task Group on Wet Blast Visual Standards. The Society for Protective Coatings has published the proceedings of the seminars conducted during the SSPC 2000 International Conference and Exhibition in Nashville, Tenn., this past November. SSPC 2000: The Proceedings of the Seminars, available both in softcover and on CD-ROM, reflects the practice in the preservation and maintenance of industrial facilities and structures through the use of protective coatings. The Orange County Convention Center was the hub for information exchange on all aspects of the use of coatings to protect, improve appearance, and extend the longevity of steel, concrete, and other industrial structures. A technical program comprising 10 seminar sessions - with more than 50 presentations - and 19 tutorials provided a framework for education and training.
