Louisiana Students Take Mississippi River Tour Field Trip

Dozens of South Louisiana middle and high school students eager to learn about careers in the maritime industry enjoyed a cool, windy autumn day on the mighty Mississippi River in St. Bernard Parish at the first-of-its-kind Maritime Field Trip.The daylong field trip was organized and coordinated by a group of maritime industry partners and featured Crescent River Port Pilots. Mississippi River Ship Channel Deepening Begins

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) officially kicked off the project to deepen of the Mississippi River Ship Channel to 50 feet Friday, as Weeks Marine’s cutterhead dredge Captain Frank started dredging 5 miles above the Head of Passes.The USACE awarded this first contract for the Ship Channel deepening to Weeks Marine on September 3, 2020, and the Captain Frank started the deepening Friday. The USACE awarded the second cutterhead dredge contract to Manson Construction on September 8, 2020. Manson’s cutterhead, the Robert M. White, is expected to begin deepening in late September.

Mississippi River Ship Channel Deepening Project Moves Forward

The Mississippi River Ship Channel could be the first port complex on the Gulf Coast to reach a depth of 50 feet now that the Director’s Report has been signed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Gulf Coast Dockside Operations and Assets acquired by Associated Terminals

Associated Terminals recently expanded its stevedoring and material handling operations on the lower Mississippi River with its acquisition of substantially all of the assets of Gulf Coast Dockside, Inc., along with a substantial interest in Bulk Material Transfer, Inc. Gulf Coast Dockside is a stevedoring company whose primary operations are located in Chalmette, LA, near milepost 90.5 of the lower Mississippi River. The company’s assets include three high capacity floating cranes and all of the attachments and equipment related to the stevedoring operation. Associated also assumes all of the existing contractual stevedoring obligations. Bulk Material Transfer operates a bulk material handling facility at the Chalmette slip within the St. Bernard Port, Harbor and Terminal District.

AAPA Presents Awards

Thirty-two ports received 60 Communications awards, two ports won awards for information technology projects, and five ports were recognized for outstanding Environmental programs during the September 25 awards luncheon at The Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida, during the American Association of Port Authorities’ (AAPA) 91st Annual Convention. In addition, five maritime professionals earned Professional Port Manager (PPM7) Certification from AAPA. AAPA’s Annual Communications Competition recognizes excellence in the products and services that ports produce to meet their public relations and marketing goals. The independent judges, communications professionals from the Washington, D.C. area, honored the best entries with 30 awards of excellence and 30 awards of merit.
