Cobham, SpeedCast Partner to Grow Maritime Broadband

Cobham SATCOM and SpeedCast International Limited have concluded a global framework agreement covering the provision of maritime stabilized antennas, which offers high speed connectivity at sea. The commercial framework was awarded following a multi-vendor selection process by SpeedCast, based on a technical, commercial and supply chain evaluation criteria and will run three years. The Digital Oilfield Microwave Communication Offshore Brazil

With most offshore wells in Brazil located between 30 and 300 km from the coast, communication with offshore assets has not always been straightforward or reliable. Some operators and service providers still use traditional maritime VSAT services for coverage offshore Brazil, yet the introduction of Microwave radio has led to a much better level of quality and reliability in high-bandwidth voice and data communications. Claudio Paschoa, Maritime Reporter’s correspondent in Brazil had an interesting conversation with Arild Fotland, head of Ceragon’s Oil and Gas Division, about the advantages of Microwave radio communications for offshore operations in Brazil. Fotland joined Ceragon in 1978 and has been stationed all over the world.

Pay-As-You-Go Satellite TV Service

KVH TracVision owners in the U.S. KVH Industries, Inc., is bringing the benefits of “Pay-As-You-Go” satellite TV service from DISH Network to customers in the marine market for the first time. This program gives seasonal boaters with TracVision satellite TV antenna systems the flexibility to pay for DISH Network service only when their boat is in the water. There is no charge for starting or stopping monthly service. This new program broadens the appeal of satellite TV on a boat.

Harris CapRock & Carnival Sign Contract

Harris CapRock Communications signed a five-year contract with Carnival Corp. to provide communications services onboard more than 100 cruise ships in its 10 cruise line brands. Harris will deploy a fully managed, end-to-end Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) solution utilizing the latest generation of iDirect technology, via a hybrid C- and Ku-band solution. Each ship will be equipped with stabilized antenna systems to provide the optimal level of flexibility and availability.

Harris CapRock Fulfill Major Cruise Line Satcom Contract

Harris CapRock has completed fleet installation of its managed communications solutions onboard 33 Royal Caribbean Cruise vessels. Since the start of the project, the company has removed 48 legacy antennas, installed 86 new ones in ports all around the world and procured more than 59,000 individual components for the project. Harris CapRock has developed a new “card-less” crew-calling kiosk and voice platform which the Royal Caribbean crew has used to make more than three million calls totalling more than 24 million minutes to date. •    New systems significantly improve voice, video and data services. •    Solution includes 24/7 proactive monitoring and support from Harris CapRockÂ’s global Customer Support Centers.

O3b Networks, Netcom-Africa Provide Connectivity

O3b Networks announced that the company has signed a multi-year, multi-million dollar deal with Netcom Africa, a provider of satellite and wireless broadband solutions to provide low latency, high capacity broadband connectivity to ships and offshore platforms in Nigeria utilizing O3bs Medium Earth Orbit technology. Nigeria is one of the world’s largest oil producing nations with most multinational oil and gas corporations operating in the region. Despite the availability of multiple submarine cable networks on the coast of the country, service providers have struggled to meet the unique needs of the oil and gas sector. The bandwidth will be delivered over the city of Lagos, the Niger Delta region as well as the offshore oil rigs that comprise approximately 50 platforms.

Eutelsat grants Type Approval on Sea Tel's 4996T Model

After a year and a half development process that included antenna upgrades and a new one-piece radome design, Sea Tel applied for and was granted Eutelsat Type Approval on their 4996T maritime VSAT system. This is the first time that a complete maritime "system" including antenna, pedestal and radome has been granted Eutelsat Type Approval. "Being granted Type Approval from Eutelsat is extremely valuable to Sea Tel. We believe it will be even more valuable for our customers who will save many man-hours of required testing time that they will now be able to waive because of this Type Approval," said Robert C. Matthews, Sea Tel Vice President of Technical Sales.
