Beth Rooney Named Director of Port of New York and New Jersey

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced Beth Rooney has been named Director of the Port Department, taking over for Sam Ruda who is departing to return to the West Coast.A maritime industry veteran, Rooney will assume the role on May 2 following three years as the ports Deputy Director and more than three decades of experience. She has been with the Port Department since 1993.Together, Ruda and Rooney have led the East Coast’s busiest and largest seaport, and third in the nation behind the Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach.

Philly Shipyard Lays Keel for First National Security Multi-Mission Vessel

Philly Shipyard on Friday hosted a keel laying ceremony for the first of up to five new purpose built, state-of-the-art training vessels for America’s state maritime academies.The new vessels—known as National Security Multi-Mission Vessels (NSMV)—will be owned and operated by U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) and are designed to provide training for America’s future mariners and to support humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions in times of need.

Australian Maritime College Partners with IAMPE

The Australian Maritime College (AMC), part of the University of Tasmania (UTAS), and the International Association of Maritime and Port Executives (IAMPE) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreeing to work together on professional development for the maritime and port industry. Under the MOU, AMC and the IAMPE will acknowledge and endorse each other’s programs related to port and terminal education and training. The IAMPE will look to provide a professional certification as Marine Terminal Operator (MTO) to AMC undergraduate students for successfully completing the maritime undergraduate program. In addition, AMC is reviewing IAMPE programs for the granting of academic credit to graduate students in their new Maritime Business Administration in Maritime Management program.

SUNY Maritime mourns the Loss of Professor James McKoy

The word has been passed that long tenured and much loved and respected SUNY Maritime Professor James "Jim" McKoy has passed away after a long illness. I am sad to announce the passing of James “Jim” McKoy, Professor of Marine Transportation, after fighting a long battle against a most devastating disease. He crossed over the bar Monday morning. Mate McKoy will be missed by his colleagues and students across the campus and by the thousands of alumni who had him as an instructor during their time at Fort Schuyler. During his 38 years at Maritime College, Mate McKoy was well respected by his students as a tough but fair instructor, dedicated to his teaching and holding his students to high standards. If you passed his courses, you knew you were ready for the USCG license examination.

Wärtsilä Donates Engine to Texas A&M University

Wärtsilä has donated an 8-cylinder Wärtsilä 20 engine and generating set, to the Marine Engineering Technology Department at Texas A&M University at Galveston. The donation represents a continuation of Wärtsilä's ongoing industry support programme aimed at helping future maritime sector leaders to acquire detailed understanding of marine technologies. The donation includes specialty tools and will provide students with valuable hands-on experience for expanding their knowledge of engine repairs, emissions and fuel economy. The Princeton Review’s annual college rankings place State University of New York Maritime College among the top 10 in the nation for career placement after graduation. General Darren McDew, commander of the U.S. Transportation Command, visited State University of New York Maritime College February 1. During the visit McDew toured the campus and Maritime College’s Training Ship Empire State VI, where he spoke with cadets about their experiences on the training ship and Military Sealift Command ships. “SUNY Maritime College, along with the other state maritime academies, is responsible for producing 70 percent of the unlimited tonnage licensed mariners that keep our nation safe and economy strong,” said RADM Michael Alfultis, president of the college.

More than 100 Graduate from SUNY Maritime

More than 100 students crossed the stage to receive their degrees at State University of New York Maritime College Jan. 29. Graduates represent 15 fields of study, a quarter of them at the graduate level. More than 60 of them will also graduate with U.S. Coast Guard licenses, the necessary certification to sail on an American ship as part of the merchant marine. “Some of you will be sailing on your license for the first time. Some will be working in other areas of the maritime industry and others may be pursuing other opportunities,” said RADM Michael Alfultis, president of SUNY Maritime. SUNY Maritime to Honor Mort Bouchard

The State University of New York Maritime College will confer the honorary degree of doctor of science degree on Morton S. Bouchard III, the president and CEO of Bouchard Transportation Company, Inc., during winter 2016 commencement exercises Friday, January 29. Mort Bouchard is his family's fourth generation to manage Bouchard Transportation Company, Inc., the largest privately owned ocean-going petroleum barge company in the United States. Bouchard Transportation operates on the East and Gulf coasts of the United States and in the Caribbean.

The State University of New York Maritime College’s 140th Anniversary Speaker Series presented a panel discussion on March 26 in the College’s Maritime Academic Center. The topic was Environmental Issues in Shipping. Panelists included Michael C. New Hires at Great Lakes Towing, Shipyard

Wartsila's 2nd Edition Encyclopedia Launch at Nor-Shipping

The second edition of Wartsila's Encyclopedia of Ship Technology is to be launched at the Nor-Shipping exhibition and conference being held in Oslo, Norway from June 2 to 5. The publication provides definitions to the current terminology used in the marine industry's technical vocabulary. It is intended as a means to pass on Wärtsilä's experience and know-how in this field, not only to the current community of experts but also to future generations of maritime professionals. It is being offered free of charge. The encyclopedia is part of Wartsila's ongoing industry support programme aimed at helping current and future marine engineers, architects, and other industry specialists.

ABS Drives Game-changing Tech through Research

University Partnership Symposium spotlights research that aims to contribute to sustainable solutions for industry. Classification society ABS has revealed technological advances at its recent University Partnership Symposium in Houston. ABS said the research it is funding through some of the top universities around the world will lead to disruptive technology that will impact the role of classification.
