Fincantieri to Open Support Facility in Everett

The Navy wants, and needs, more ships; but it can’t build them fast enough.While the U.S. Navy aims to achieve a 355-ship fleet, it is decommissioning older (and some not so old) ships at about the same rate it's adding new ones.A Congressional Research Service report stated that, as of April 17, 2023, the Navy included 296 battle force ships. Vigor Completes USS Chosin (CG 65) Modernization

Vigor announced it has completed a three-year modernization project on U.S. Navy Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Chosin (CG 65) at its Harbor Island shipyard in Seattle.The project, which encompassed more than 1.7 million hours of work for Vigor employees, in addition to work by dozens of subcontractors and the U.S. Navy, was one of the largest, longest and most complex in Vigor’s history, the company said. Work completed including weapons, communications and information systems modernization, as well as upgrades to many other areas of the ship.

Vigor Completes USS McCampbell Modification

Vigor reports it has completed the modernization of USS McCampbell (DDG 85) at Swan Island, sending the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer on to its new homeport at Naval Station Everett, Wash. The 18-month, more than $155 million project was the largest ever completed by Vigor’s Ship Repair team, and the largest of its kind at Swan Island in nearly 30 years, the company said.“Our skilled workers at Swan Island were honored to support the U.S. Navy and get USS McCampbell back into service,” said Adam Beck, Vigor Executive Vice President of Ship Repair.

Vigor Wins $133 Mln US Navy Repair Job

Vigor Marine has been awarded a $133,406,869 firm-fixed-price contract to prepare for and accomplish repair and alteration requirements for USS McCampbell (DDG 85) chief of naval operations scheduled depot maintenance availability. The contract includes options which, if exercised, will bring the cumulative value of this contract to $155,621,173.The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer departed Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan on July 2, and is currently is en route to Vigor's Portland, Ore. shipyard, where she will undergo her midlife modernization.

Nimitz Carrier Strike Group Returns to Washington

Washington-based ships assigned to Nimitz Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 11 returned Dec. 10, just in time for the upcoming holidays following a six-month deployment to the Indo-Asia-Pacific region and the Arabian Gulf. The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68), with embarked CSG-11, returned home to Naval Base Kitsap, and Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers USS Shoup (DDG 86) and USS Kidd (DDG 100) returned to Naval Station Everett. The strike group consists of Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68), Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 11, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 9, and Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruisers USS Princeton (CG 59) and USS Lake Erie (CG 70). The air wing and DESRON command staff disembarked in San Diego Dec.

USS Nimitz, USS Shoup and USS Kidd Depart for Deployment

USS Nimitz (CVN 68), USS Kidd (DDG 100) and USS Shoup (DDG 86) departed their homeports of Naval Base Kitsap and Naval Station Everett, respectively, for a regularly scheduled deployment. This is a previously planned, routine deployment and is not in response to any specific incident or regional event. This deployment is an example of the U.S. Navy's routine presence in waters around the globe displaying our commitment to stability, regional cooperation and economic prosperity for all nations. "This deployment is the culmination of months of intensive training and preparations," said Rear Adm. Bill Byrne Jr., commander, Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 11. "The Nimitz Strike Group stands ready to respond to a wide variety of contingencies, be that a humanitarian disaster or a regional incident.

USS Ingraham Decommissioned

Sailors and guests bade farewell to Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate USS Ingraham (FFG 61) as the ship concluded 25 years of naval service during a decommissioning ceremony on Naval Station Everett (NSE), Washington, Nov. 12. Former Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates joined the crew in honoring Ingraham and her many years of service by acting as the guest speaker at the ceremony. Several former crew members, plankowners, friends and family also attended. Ingraham's last commanding officer, Cmdr. The Oliver Hazard Perry-class guided-missile frigate USS Ford completed her last operational underway July 26, returning to her homeport at Naval Station Everett (NSE). The five-day underway saw the Ford participate in a Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) -directed torpedo testing exercise and the final offload of ammunition at Naval Magazine Indian Island (NMII). "It's an honor to be selected for this tasking, "said Lt. j.g. Katherine Rovinski, anti-submarine warfare officer. "It's nice to know that Ford's contributions to the Navy will carry on well past her final days.

Navy’s First Mobile Landing Platform Departs San Diego

USNS Montford Point (MLP 1) departs San Diego  for Naval Station Everett, Wash. Montford Point is the Navy’s first mobile landing platform, delivered to the Navy in San Diego May 14 and expected to be fully operational in fiscal year 2015. The ship, crewed by 33 contract mariners working for a company under charter to Military Sealift Command, will perform system tests during the voyage to its temporary layberth. Montford Point is scheduled for final contract trials in September, with its core capability set installed later this year.

USS Nimitz Indian Ocean Shipboad Fire Extinguished

A fire  aboard aircraft carrier 'USS Nimitz' (CVN 68) in the ship's electrical equipment was quickly extinguished by the ship's underway fire-fighting team. No Sailors were injured during the event or the response, and the ship and embarked air wing remain operable and in a safe, stable condition. The ship's underway firefighting team and watchstanders responded to the electrical fire, set fire boundaries and extinguished the fire. The extent of the damage remains to be determined.

Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln due soon at Naval Station Norfolk after 8-month deployment. Commanded by Capt. John D. Alexander, Lincoln departed Naval Station Everett, Wash., her home since January 1997, in December 2011 for a scheduled change-of-homeport deployment to Virginia where she is due for a four-year refueling complex overhaul (RCOH). During the RCOH period, Lincoln's nuclear reactors will be refueled, the ship's combat and communication systems will be upgraded and modernized, and the hull, mechanical and electrical systems will be overhauled.

USS Nimitz New Homeport in Everett, Wash.

The Navy announced that the nuclear aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) will be homeported at Naval Station Everett, Wash., upon completion of the ship's docking planned incremental availability (DPIA) maintenance at Bremerton, Wash., in December 2011. After a thorough analysis and review of related factors, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus decided to homeport Nimitz in Everett following the departure of USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) in early fiscal 2012 for a four-year refueling complex overhaul (RCOH) in Hampton Roads, Va. Clean Sweep for Alex Haley Crew

The Coast Guard cutter Alex Haley and crew returned home Wednesday evening following a six-week deployment to Puget Sound, where the crew underwent a challenging period of training and evaluation. The ship first stopped in Seattle, where a large part of the crew completed team firefighting and damage control courses where crewmembers learned fire-fighting techniques and had to control flooding in a tank made to simulate an engineering space on a sinking ship. With almost 60 of the 100-person crew on their first assignment to a ship, the learning curve was steep at times. Following this training the ship sailed north to Naval Station Everett Washington and began a rigorous three-week Tailored Ship’s Training Availability (TSTA).

Todd Pacific Shipyards to Overhaul Carriers

Todd Pacific Shipyards Corporation has been awarded a five-year contract with the United States Navy to provide long-term overhaul and maintenance to the NIMITZ CLASS aircraft carriers (CVN) homeported in Puget Sound. The contract consists of multiple contract options for planned incremental availabilities (PIA's), docking planned incremental availabilities (DPIA's) and continuous maintenance and upkeep for the USS LINCOLN (CVN-72), USS STENNIS (CVN-74), USS NIMITZ (CVN-68) and USS VINSON (CVN-70) when they are in Puget Sound. The work to be performed includes all types of non-nuclear ship repair, alteration and maintenance. All on-board work will be accomplished by the Todd Pacific workforce at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington, or Naval Station Everett.

Bollinger Shipyards, Inc., Lockport, La., has signed a contract to build two, 250-ft., double hull, jumbo coastwise service, single rake hopper barges for Tide Leasing, LLC, Birmingham, Ala. Construction has begun on the first barge and building of the second vessel will begin in August. Both are scheduled for delivery in November 2000. Overall, each barge will be 250 ft. in length, with a 52.5-ft. beam and 14-ft. depth and 11.5 ft. maximum draft. They will be built with .75-in. steel at the hopper bottoms and .625-in. steel at the hopper sides plus .5-in. T-1 liner plates on the bottom and upper sides of the hopper. Each will be able to carry up to 3,000 metric tons of coal and will operate out of Santa Marta, Colombia. Shearer and Associates, Inc., Metairie, La.

Todd Awarded Navy Contract

Todd Shipyards Corporation announced today that the U.S. Navy has awarded to its wholly owned subsidiary, Todd Pacific Shipyards Corporation ("Todd Pacific"), a modification to previously awarded contract N00024-00-C-8514 in support of repairs and alterations performed during the Selected Restricted Availabilities ("SRA's"), the Docking Selected Restricted Availabilities ("DSRA's"), and the Continuous Maintenance Availabilities ("CMA's") of the surface combatants (frigates and destroyers) stationed at Naval Station Everett. This modification extends by approximately five years the Company's Combatant Maintenance Team Contract ("CMT") originally awarded to Todd Pacific by the Navy in 2000. This modification also provides for a cost-plus-award-fee contract.

SS Shoup Enters SRA Period

USS Shoup (DDG 86) ship’s restricted availability (SRA) period began Jan. 10 at Naval Station Everett. SECNAV, CNO Environmental Awards Presented at Navy Memorial

The Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) and the Chief of Naval Operations Environmental Awards were presented June 7 in two different ceremonies at the U.S. Navy Memorial and Naval Heritage Center here. The annual CNO Environmental Awards program recognizes Navy people, ships and installations for their exceptional environmental stewardship. The CNO Environmental Award winners then move up to compete for the SECNAV Environmental Awards which recognize Navy and Marine Corps individuals, teams, ships and installations for their exceptional environmental stewardship.
