A tug and barge ran aground Thursday night near Deerfield Beach, Fla., while transporting munitions from Port Canaveral to a U.S. Naval facility in the Bahamas.The U.S.-flagged tug Sea Eagle had four people on board when it began taking on water and went aground at 8:45 p.m. on Thursday, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) said. No injuries or pollution have been reported, and both the tug and barge are said to be in stable condition.Three of the crew members were rescued from the attached barge by Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations (CBP AMO) rescue crews.

The end of the 2019 saw some unprecedented funding measure pass through Congress and signed into law by President Trump. The Gulf and East Coast have continued to receive significant funding to help deepen and widen navigational channels and gateways. One of the projects passed into law included the Gulf Coast Regional Demonstration Project. Some of the ports receiving funding and underway include Mobile, Baltimore, Houston, Port Everglades and Norfolk. All these projects funded by Congress draw a direct correlation to the expanded Panama Canal.

The runner ignored a previously issued order from U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port (COTP) to not depart on his seagoing journey. The order outlined specific safety conditions which Baluchi failed to meet. At approximately 2 a.m. Sunday, a Coast Guard Station Fort Lauderdale boatcrew discovered Reza Baluchi aboard his makeshift hydro pod approximately 7 miles off the coast of Jupiter en route to Bermuda. Coast Guard crews remained on-scene with Baluchi throughout the night to ensure his safety and to prevent other vessels from colliding with the hydro pod.

Coast Guard rescue crews rescued four men from the water after their vessel capsized one nautical mile east of Port Everglades inlet Wednesday evening. An additional male was taken to Broward General Hospital for a higher level of care. Watchstanders from Coast Guard Sector Miami command center received a report from a person clinging to the hull of a capsized fishing vessel and requested assistance. The watchstanders issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast and launched rescue crews from Coast Guard Station Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and from Coast Guard Air Station Miami to begin searching for the people in the water. 1968-M/V Triple Crown foundered off the coast of Southern California with a loss of nine lives while retrieving the anchor and chain of a large offshore drilling rig. At the time of the casualty Triple Crown had eight anchors and 26,000 feet of chain on board, the weight of which caused a low freeboard aft. Three-to five waves washed over the stern and entered a stackhouse door that could not be closed due to the location of one anchor on deck. The engine flooded, the vessel listed to starboard and sank. The Coast Guard investigated. 1999-Elian Gonzalez, a 5-year old Cuban boy, was found on Thanksgiving morning clinging to an inner tube three miles off the coast of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. A Unified Command compromised of federal, state and vessel owner’s representatives are overseeing response operations to the grounding of the 600 foot bulk freight ship Federal Pescadores which was attempting to anchor outside Port Everglades, Fla. The Panamanian-flagged vessel was carrying cement, also has approximately 588 tons of bunker oil and 105 tons of diesel fuel onboard. Titan Maritime, LLC and its subcontractor Resolve Marine Group will focus on refloating the M/V Federal Pescadores at high tide, Sunday afternoon. Commercial salvage engineers began removing fuel oil from the vessel’s double bottom fuel tanks at approximately 11:40 a.m. today to mitigate any pollution risks prior to refloating the vessel. The fuel oil is being transferred to MSRC Barge 452.

MIAMI - Crews from Station Miami Beach, Station Fort Lauderdale, Air Station Opa Locka, and the Coast Guard Cutter Gannet responded this afternoon as the Betty Wood, a 130-foot tug pushing a 500-foot barge with 10 people on board, experienced an engine fire 17 miles east of Haulover Beach. The initial distress call was received at 11:52 a.m. Currently there are three rescue boats, two helicopters, one Falcon jet, and the Coast Guard Cutter Gannet on scene to assist the vessel's crew and monitor the situation. The fire is reported to be extinguished, although there is still smoke on board. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Coast Guard units, local law enforcement and marine agencies will conduct an exercise Wednesday to test and evaluate upgraded communication and tracking technologies and to evaluate emergency response plans in the Port Everglades, Fla. area. The exercise scenario includes responding to a fire on a vessel and detection of unknown vessels/people in a restricted area. The scenario requires a coordinated response that will test the upgraded communication and tracking technologies in a simulated emergency situation. Decision makers will exercise information obtained from emergency response plans, critical contact information, and additional information from on scene forces.
