Three Rescued from Barge After Tug Sinks off Rhode Island

Three mariners were rescued from a disabled barge Wednesday after their tug sank off the coast of Point Judith, R.I.At 8:17 a.m., watchstanders at U.S. Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England, in Woods Hole, Mass., received a call via VHF Channel 16 from the tug Warthog, reporting their vessel was taking on water, and had a barge in tow. A Coast Guard Station Point Judith 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew immediately launched to assist, and when they arrived on scene, the tug was completely submerged, and all three Warthog crewmembers were on the 108-foot barge.

USCG Rescues 2 Fishermen near Block Island

Coast Guard crews rescued two fishermen from a sinking vessel 10 miles south of Newport, Rhode Island, Monday. At approximately noon, the two person crew of the 38-foot fishing boat More Misery notified watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England in Woods Hole, Massachusetts that they were taking on water and needed help. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod and two 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crews from Coast Guard Station Castle Hill and Coast Guard Station Point Judith were launched. The Station Castle Hill crew arrived on scene and successfully transferred the two fishermen aboard. Shortly after, Coast Guard crews began dewatering the More Misery and safely towed it back to Newport.

USCG Responded To Disabled Tug 18 Mi East Of Block Island

The U.S. Coast Guard responded to reports of a disabled tug 18 miles east of Block Island, Rhode Island, Sunday. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, were notified at approximately 3:30 p.m., Sunday, of an engine fire aboard the 126-foot tug Viking. The vessel’s on board fixed fire-fighting system was able to extinguish the fire, leaving the vessel disabled with 10 people aboard. The owner of the tug dispatched two relief tugs to the scene. The Viking was able to restore their engines and are transiting to Buzzards Bay under escort by the tug Sebine. None of the ten people aboard the tug were injured, and no pollution was released as a result of the fire.

Coast Guard Evacuates New Bedford Fisherman

Coast Guard crews medically evacuated a fisherman at approximately 8:00 a.m., Wednesday, approximately two miles west of Block Island, R.I. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England received a notification at 7:52 a.m. from the fishing vessel Explorer, homeported in New Bedford, Mass., reporting that a crewmember sustained a head injury due to the parting of a wire. A Coast Guard Station Point Judith 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew immediately launched and safely transferred the fisherman to waiting emergency medical services at Station Point Judith for further transport to South County hospital, R.I. Coast Guard suspends search for overboard tug master

BOSTON — The Coast Guard has suspended its search pending further developments for a 48-year-old man who was reported to have fallen overboard from a Boston-bound tugboat approximately nine miles south of Newport, R.I., Thursday at 1:36 p.m. Coast Guard crews covered more than 775 square miles searching for the master of the New York-based 91-foot tug Steven-Scott. The crew of the Steven-Scott contacted the Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England Command Center at 2:40 p.m., Wednesday, reporting that the man was last seen at approximately 1:30 p.m. and that he may have gone overboard. “The Coast Guard conducted a thorough search with multiple assets through the night…

Crews Safe After Two Fishing Boats Sink

In two different northeastern states, five fishermen are safe after their vessels sank this past weekend. During separate events, the fishermen were transported safely back to shore by Coast Guard rescue crews from Rhode Island and New York. In each case, the fishermen were able to alert rescue crews and enter their vessels' life rafts before the vessels sank. Saturday, the crew of the West Kingston, R.I.,-based fishing vessel Elizabeth Helen was hauling in their catch when the vessel sank three miles northeast of Block Island, R.I.
