Navy to Deploy Surface Ships to Arctic

The U.S. Navy may follow up October’s carrier strike group operations in the Arctic with another foray into the icy High North, with leadership considering sending a group of ships into a trans-Arctic shipping lane this summer, the Navy secretary said.Much has been made of potential Arctic shipping lanes opening up as ice melts and more areas become navigable, said a press release from USNI NEWS.An expected uptick in commercial shipping and tourism in the Arctic region has put some urgency on the U.S. Coast Guard’s plans to build a fleet of icebreakers, as well as the Navy’s interest in having a more visible presence in the region.Navy Secretary Richard V.

GE Exhibits Latest Innovations at Sea Japan

At Sea Japan 2016, GE will showcase its latest marine technologies, helping Japanese shipyards and mariners achieve more efficient maritime operations while meeting stringent environmental regulations. GE’s Marine Solutions business has been a reliable partner of the country’s marine industry. In the military space, Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) has chosen GE’s LM2500 and LM500 gas turbines for its naval ships. To date, GE’s marine systems’ supplier IHI has packaged, tested and delivered over 70 LM2500 and more than 30 LM500 marine gas turbines.

GE Marine Signs Licensing Agreement

GE Marine has signed an agreement with Echogen Power Systems, Akron, Ohio, to be the exclusive provider of Echogen’s heat-to-power system for use on commercial and military marine vessels worldwide. Echogen’s product enhances GE Marine’s mechanical, hybrid and all-electric propulsion system solutions. McDermott Profit Falls 22%

Revenue increased 6 percent to $1.45b from $1.36b a year earlier, as higher offshore oil and gas construction and government revenue offset lower power generation systems revenue. The company said it posted a $68.3m drop in income in its offshore oil and gas construction segment, mainly due to a high-level of unproductive offshore working days for major construction vessels during the 2008 first quarter, because of poor weather conditions and reduced activities in the Caspian region. McDermott said offshore oil and gas revenue rose to $645.9 from $550.3m as fewer activities in the Caspian region were offset by added work in the Middle East and Asia Pacific regions.

CSO Seawell Docks at A&P Southampton

A&P Southampton recently welcomed a slightly unusual vessel to their dry-dock. The ship repair, maintenance and conversion company, whose customers mainly consist of Cruise, Ferry, and Trading Vessels have successfully completed a refit of Coflexip Stena Offshore’s CSO Seawell, an offshore support vessel at their King George V dry-dock. The ‘Seawell’ is a highly technical vessel accommodating three moonpools, two diving bells, divers decompression chambers, hyperbaric lifeboats and has a derrick with active heave capability and is normally employed doing well intervention in the North Sea. Drew Offers Electronic Steam System Monitoring

A new PC-based software from the Drew Marine Division of Ashland Specialty Chemical Company, monitors steam generating water treatment tests and recommends action for out-of-range results. The software, called Drew Watch Electronic Services, is the first electronic steam system monitoring software in the marine industry. It eliminates hand compilation of paper logs by automatically generating color histograms, and allows data to be sent electronically from the ship to Drew technical centers, as well as to ship management, for in-depth review and further recommendations.
