Ørsted Sees Huge Offshore Wind Potential in S Korea

OW Bunker Launches Australia Operations

OW Bunker, a physical distributor and reseller of marine fuels, announced the launch of a physical distribution operation in Australia. The move is part of OW Bunker’s strategy to further expand the company’s global physical distribution presence in key locations for customers, ensuring end-to-end quality in the services and products that it provides. OW Bunker has leased a fuel oil tank in Port Kembla, New South Wales. The company will provide vessels with a full range of products including RMG 380 cSt and RME 180 cSt fuel oil ex-pipe and DMA gas oil by road tanker.

Great Lakes Shipping Shows Signs of Recovery

April U.S.-Flag Lakes Float Little Changed from a Year Ago

U.S.-flag Great Lakes freighters (“lakers”) carried 8.2 million tons of dry-bulk cargo in April, a virtual repeat of a year ago, and 2.7 percent better than the month’s 5-year average. Iron ore cargos for the steel industry registered a modest increase compared to a year ago. Coal for power generation and steel production dipped 16.5 percent. U.S.-Flag Cargo Trends

U.S.-flag Great Lakes freighters carried 10 million tons of dry-bulk cargo in June, an increase of 5.2 percent compared to May, but a decrease of 3.3 percent compared to a year ago. The June “float” was also 3.9 percent below the month’s 5-year average. Iron ore cargos for the steel industry have increased by 12.2 percent over the past year. Coal for power generation and steel production fell by 25.3 percent. Aggregate and fluxstone for the construction and steel industries slipped by 7.2 percent. Through June, U.S.-flag cargos stand at 33.7 million tons, an increase of 2.4 percent compared to the same point in 2010. Iron ore has increased 7.6 percent, but coal and limestone are down by 2.8 percent and 4.9 percent respectively.

Employment Peaking at Great Lakes Shipyards

When the 1,000-ft-long Great Lakes freighter Edwin H. Gott arrived at Bay Shipbuilding Company in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, it marked the beginning of the busiest time of year for Great Lakes shipyards. This project and other annual winter maintenance work on U.S.-flag Great Lakes ships will provide jobs for more than 1,200 men and women at U.S. shipyards around the Great Lakes. The Gott, one of the largest U.S.-flag vessels working the Great Lakes, is having new engines installed this winter that will increase its fuel efficiency and significantly reduce its air emissions. FLIR Systems, Inc (NASDAQ: FLIR) announced that John W. Wood, Jr. has been elected to the Board of Directors for a term expiring at the Company's 2010 Annual Meeting of Shareholders. Mr. Wood has also been appointed to serve on the Corporate Governance Committee of the Board of Directors. Mr. Wood served as chief executive officer of Analogic Corporation, a leading designer and manufacturer of medical imaging and security systems, from 2003 to 2006, and is currently a consultant. EU Says China to Rein in Steel and Shipbuilding

The European Union has told China that it will face a growing threat of trade penalties unless it curbs breakneck capacity expansion in steel and shipbuilding, EU diplomats said on Tuesday. The diplomats said EU Industry Commissioner Guenter Verheugen had delivered the warning during a round of high-level meetings in Beijing. They said feelings were running high over the two sectors because steel was an important industry in nearly all of the EU's 27 member states and because the EU's own shipbuilding industry had just been through a painful round of consolidation. An EU spokesman in Beijing, Michael Jennings, said later that Verheugen strongly distanced himself from any suggestion that the EU was close to initiating any measures on steel or shipbuilding.

B&N Nordsjöfrakt Buys Additional Ships in China

The B&N Nordsjöfrakt shipping group signed an agreement withv the Chinese trading house Xiamen C&D and the Mawei Shipyard covering the delivery of a new vessels for shipments for the forestry and steel industries. The ship will be placed in traffic in the North Atlantic. The new vessel is of the same type as B&N's Norön ship, which was delivered by the same shipyard earlier this year. Delivery is scheduled for the first quarter of 2003. B&N holds an option for an additional ship.
