Water Outflow on Seaway Now Above 10,400 CMS

The Chamber of Marine Commerce supports the International Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Board’s decision Friday to continue flow rates from the Moses-Saunders dam at 10,400 cubic meters per second (CMS).Maintaining the 10,400 CMS outflow still results in a significant cost to the economy, with an estimated $2.3 million to $3 million in business revenues lost for every day it’s in place due to delays for all ship transits through the Seaway.The Chamber’s ship operators are following…

ClassNK to Research on Brittle Crack Arrest Design

ClassNK announced that it will carry out a joint research project aimed at improving safety standards for ultra-large container ships. As container ships increase in size, so too does the thickness of the steel that is used. The preventative measures for brittle fracture become even more important with thicker steel especially in areas where higher stress occurs such as the upper deck and hatch side coaming of the cargo holds. Newbuild Chemical Tanker Employs Innovative Tank Design

The 12,500MT Sunrise Hope is the world's first chemical tanker to use a combination of duplex stainless steel and stainless clad steel in the construction of its cargo tanks.

The world's first chemical tanker to use a combination of duplex stainless steel and stainless clad steel in the construction of its cargo tanks was delivered to Oita-based Hiro Naviera S.A. November 15, 2014 by Usuki Shipyard Co., Ltd., Japanese classification society ClassNK reported. The 12,500MT chemical tanker Sunrise Hope, owned by Hiro Naviera S.A., will be operated by Nippon Marine Co., Ltd. The eco-ship design vessel is equipped with 14 cargo tanks, all which employ duplex stainless steel technology.

US Steel Producers Win Anti-dumping Case

The United States has approved anti-dumping duties against South Korea and other producers of steel pipes for the energy sector, a victory for domestic producers hoping to benefit from a boom in the U.S. shale oil and gas industry. U.S. steel companies lodged a complaint in 2013 as foreign manufacturers cashed in on soaring U.S. energy infrastructure demand. Imports doubled last year and accounted for nearly two-thirds of the domestic market, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute. Although subject to appeal, the decision puts the U.S. Department of Commerce closer to imposing tariffs as high as 118 percent on "oil country tubular goods" (OCTG).

On June 20, a diverse coalition of 58 national and regional organizations representing a wide array of leading business, maritime and labor organizations signed on to a letter to Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee Chairman John Rockefeller (D-W.Va.) and Ranking Member John Thune (R-SD) urging that the committee mark up and approve S. 2094, a bill that would establish a uniform, science-based national framework for the regulation of ballast water and other vessel discharges. On March 13, a diverse coalition of 59 national and regional organizations representing a wide array of business, maritime and labor interests signed on to a letter to Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee leadership, Chairman John Rockefeller (D-WV) and Ranking Member John Thune (R-SD), thanking them for cosponsoring S. 2094, a bill that would establish a uniform national framework for the regulation of ballast water and other vessel discharges, and urging swift Committee consideration and approval. S. 2094, introduced on March 6 by Sens. Mark Begich (D-AK) and Marco Rubio (R-FL), has 23 bipartisan co-sponsors, nearly one-quarter of the Senate.

First Standards for Application of Corrosion Resistant Steels

ClassNK has developed and released the world’s first set of standards for the application of corrosion resistant steels to the cargo oil tanks of oil tankers. The new Guidelines on Corrosion Resistant Steel for COT are the first guidelines to lay out clear requirements for the application of the new steels, whose use was approved by the IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) earlier this year. The growing volume of crude oil carried by the world’s tanker fleet has led to rising concerns over pollution of the marine environment, and the last decade has brought tremendous changes to the building and survey requirements for oil tankers.

Waterways Users Board Testifies Before Senate

Matt Woodruff, a member of the Inland Waterways Users Board, the Waterways Council Board of Directors, and Director- Government Affairs for Kirby Corporation in Houston, Texas, testified before the Senate Committee on Environment & Public Works about the essential value of the waterways system to the nation’s economy, jobs and America’s continued competitiveness. He specifically addressed the Inland Waterways Capital Development Plan, a comprehensive, consensus-based package of recommendations formulated by an industry and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers working group to improve the reliability of the U.S. inland navigation system and its infrastructure over the next 20 years.

WCI: Groundswell of Support for Inland Waterways Capital Plan

To date, more than 200 industry stakeholders including national organizations, state, regional and local organizations, and companies have endorsed the new comprehensive, consensus-based package of recommendations formulated by an industry and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers working group to improve the reliability of the U.S. inland navigation system over the next 20 years, known as the Inland Waterways Capital Development Plan. Among the supporters are the United States Chamber of Commerce, the National Association of Manufacturers, American Land Conservancy, National Corn Growers Association, National Grain & Feed Association, Steel Manufacturers Association, National Mining Association, National Council of Farm Cooperatives, and many others from diverse segments of the American economy.
