Chinese Buyers Snap up Indian Steel in Face of Trade Tensions

© Andrey/AdobeStock

India's steel exports more than doubled between April and July to hit their highest level in at least six years, boosted by a surge of Chinese buying in defiance of tensions between Beijing and New Delhi.Traders said reduced prices had driven the purchases as Indian sellers sought to get rid of a surplus generated by the impact of COVID-19 on domestic demand and generate much-needed income. It was unclear whether the sales broke any trade rules, but the China Iron and Steel Association…

Drewry: Capesize Charter Rates to Go Up

Drewry maintains a positive outlook on the dry bulk market and expects charter rates to improve from current levels, driven by moderate increases in vessel demand and low growth in vessel supply as a result of restrained new ordering and a thin orderbook, according to the latest edition of the Dry Bulk Forecaster, published by global shipping consultancy Drewry. The uncertainty surrounding the dry bulk market, driven by trade wars could, nonetheless, slow down the increase in charter rates. A game of tariffs and counter- tariffs is underway with US at the centre of most of the tussles and it seems unlikely that trade wrangles will end soon. But trade wars might not have a direct negative impact on dry bulk trade.

Dry Bulk Shipping Outlook Good

The dry bulk commodity imports into and exports out of China we have seen in the first half of 2016 are very positive – and nothing short of extraordinary, says BIMCO. But, putting it into perspective, compared to the devastating freight rate levels over the same period, it highlights that something is very wrong in the dry bulk market. The market is nowhere near balanced. BIMCO’s data on seaborne iron ore imports into China, shows a growth of 9.6% for H1-2016 as compared to H1-2015. With seaborne coal volumes shipped into China during H1-2016 being on par with H2-2015, this represents a 5.0% growth on H1-2015. A continued surge in thermal coal imports seems limited…

China Aug Power Output Falls First Time in 4 yrs

China's power output, a bellwether for economic activity, posted its first annual decline in more than four years in August, adding to evidence that the world's second-largest economy is losing momentum after a brief rebound in the second quarter. Power output in the world's top consumer fell 2.2 percent to 495.9 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) in August from a year earlier, data showed on Saturday. While the annual fall was in part due to the high reading last summer, when many cities were struck by a record heat wave, overall electricity production also posted its first fall in three months - a sign of slackening demand from major industrial users.

Container, Cruise Records at Marseilles Fos amid Oil Slump

Total 2013 throughput at Marseilles Fos confirmed containers, steel industry bulks, LNG and cruise traffic as the growth drivers at the French port. In contrast, a mounting decline in crude oil and petroleum volumes pegged overall cargo to 80 million metric tons for the year, down 7% on 2012. Oil and gas still accounts for more than half the cargo handled at one of the world’s biggest oil ports, but volumes have been eroded by the restructuring of Europe’s refinery industry. At just over 46MT, last year’s oil and gas total was 12% and some 5MT lower than in 2012 and 13MT worse than in 2011.

Ruukki can now supply steels for all applications requiring wear-resistant special steels. Ruukki Raex special steel can withstand wear and surface pressure and the range has now been expanded to include the thicker wear-resistant steels needed, for example, in the mining industry, Raex said. Raex special steel is made in a range of thicknesses from two-80 mm. The new thicker Raex wear-resistant steels up to 80 mm can be used, among other things, to manufacture parts for heavy machinery and equipment designed for excavation, loading, transporting and crushing ore in mines.

U.S. Tariffs on Steel Imports Impacts Rautaruukki

Steel exports to the USA accounted for just over 2.5 per cent of Rautaruukki's turnover in 2001. The Group supplied a total of some 4.7 million tonnes of steel last year, and just over 80,000 tonnes of this went to the USA. The US decision to impose tariffs on steel imports will not therefore have a major direct impact on Rautaruukki's business operations. Rautaruukki has alternative plans for sales to compensate for the exports to the USA. It is thought that the impact of the US decision to impose import tariffs, which was widely anticipated by the steel markets, has already been passed on to steel prices, which are low, at the end of 2001 and the start of this year. For that reason the US decision is not expected to have any major impact on product prices in Europe.

Steel Prices Stay Firm

With global steel demand running at an unprecedented level, rapidly rising prices have been a constant headache for ship repairers, as well as ship builders, in recent months. And despite sharply higher steel output, there is little sign of any softening as the New Year dawns. According to the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI), crude steel production for the 62 countries reporting their figures was 945m tonnes by the end of November, up 9% on the corresponding period one year earlier. Analysts were expecting total production to break through the billion tonne mark easily by the end of the year for the first time ever. IISI figures show that China accounted for the largest increase in output.

EU Says China to Rein in Steel and Shipbuilding

The European Union has told China that it will face a growing threat of trade penalties unless it curbs breakneck capacity expansion in steel and shipbuilding, EU diplomats said on Tuesday. The diplomats said EU Industry Commissioner Guenter Verheugen had delivered the warning during a round of high-level meetings in Beijing. They said feelings were running high over the two sectors because steel was an important industry in nearly all of the EU's 27 member states and because the EU's own shipbuilding industry had just been through a painful round of consolidation. An EU spokesman in Beijing, Michael Jennings, said later that Verheugen strongly distanced himself from any suggestion that the EU was close to initiating any measures on steel or shipbuilding.
