Anyone who has been around the Offshore Oil and Gas or the Marine industries for long has heard of plans for mining various minerals located on or just below the seafloor. In fact, when Howard Hughes built the Glomar Explorer in 1972, the cover story for its true mission – recovering a Soviet submarine - was that the rig would be used to mine manganese nodules from the deep ocean floor. The FPSO Cost Discussion

At first, the oil-price and project-cancellation forecasts had hushed the audience at FPSO Europe Congress 2015. Speaker No. 1 had delegates looking at each other for signs of fear. Then, rival contractors — veterans of many a bitter tender — piled on the logic of their own methods for cost-cutting in floating production storage and offloading projects. Rather than stamp out competing arguments, a relentless costs discussion had another, unexpected effect. It lifted the gloom and crystallized the opportunity at hand to engineer FPSO demand.

Brazil Offshore: Petrobras & Subsea Engineering

Brazil’s Petrobras has been one of the leading players in deepwater, subsea development projects since the turn of the century. These projects include pre-salt and post-salt plays, which require extensive and complex subsea engineering and construction efforts. It would be impossible for Petrobras to develop all of its projects alone, therefore much is done by specialized companies, mostly of foreign origin. “We could not have advanced in this project (pre-salt) conventionally, developing the production individually. We needed a global vision of the projects, starting from a high level plan,” said José Formigli, Petrobras’ Executive Director of E&P, speaking of the primary plan for the development of the pre-salt at the Santos Basin, the Plansal, which was created in 2008.

Manuflex, Centek Collaborate on Goodchild Pilots Exhaust Systems

Custom exhaust systems designed, engineered and manufactured by Manuflex Ltd. in partnership with Centek Industries are providing sound attenuation aboard two fast pilot launches built by Goodchild Marine of the United Kingdom for Estuary Services, Ltd. Both vessels operate from Ramsgate, supporting Thames pilots in the busy Southern North Sea and Thames estuary. Estuary Elan was the first of its innovative design by French Naval Architect Pantocarene to be built in the UK by Goodchild Marine.

Halyard to Install Exhaust Silencers for Alicat Wind Farm Vessels

As the 2013 Seawork International Show approaches, U.K.-based marine exhaust specialist, Halyard, announced thatit has been selected by Great Yarmouth based boat builder Alicat Workboats to ensure its new four WFSV (Wind Farm Support Vessels) remain quiet on the water and to provide increased comfort for those on board. Alicat Workboats commissioned Halyard to design, build and install a full exhaust silencer system for all four of its new state-of-the-art Offshore Wind Farm Service Vessels. Alicat Workboats is constructing the four vessels (1x12m, 2x19m and 1x19m) for U.K.

GMC to Launch Intelligently Connected Pipe

GMC Limited will formally launch its Intelligently Connected Pipe (ICP) concept to the industry at ONS 2012 (Stavanger 28 – 31 August) at stand #M1176. “ICP is a major step forward in riser technology as it allows GMC to deliver fatigue resistant, lightweight, non-welded steel risers,” explains Toby Bailey, European Sales and Marketing Manager. “We are delighted to be able use the ONS event as a platform to showcase this ground breaking technology, which can remove all welding from riser and flowline construction.” Innovation runs deep.

Outlook for Floating Production Systems

Floating production has evolved to a mature technology that opens for development oil and gas reservoirs that would be otherwise impossible or uneconomic to tap. The technology enables production far beyond the depth constraints of fixed platforms, generally considered to be 1,400 ft. (426.7 m), and provides a flexible solution for developing short-lived fields with marginal reserves and fields in remote locations where installation of a fixed facility would be difficult. Floating production systems vary greatly in appearance - from ship-shape FPSO vessels to multi hull production semis to cylindrical shaped production spars.
