South Korean shipbuilding giant Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has won a design contract worth about $500 million for a liquefaction unit to be used for Steelhead LNG’s Kwispaa LNG export project in Canada’s British Columbia, reported Yonhap. Hyundai Heavy will conduct a front-end engineering design (FEED) for the hull of the At-Shore LNG (ASLNG) and build the LNG liquefaction facility for Steelhead LNG Corp., the company said in a statement. The ASLNG facility, scheduled to begin operations in 2024 on the coast of Vancouver, will transform natural gas sent through underground pipelines into 6 million tons of liquefied forms of gas per year. The liquefied gas will be shipped by gas carrier to buyer countries, a company spokesman said.

The U.S. federal government has killed more than 1,000 seabirds on an Oregon island since May to protect endangered salmon as part of a plan that environmentalists say is flawed and are seeking to stop with a lawsuit. So far, 1,221 adult cormorants have been killed and more than 5,000 nests destroyed, U.S. officials said on Friday, adding the killing was expected to continue until mid- to late October when the seabirds migrate for the winter. "Government agents are racing about in their boat blowing birds out of the sky," said Bob Sallinger, conservation director of the Audubon Society of Portland. The government workers started culling the birds on May 24 as part of a multi-year plan to kill 11,000 double-crested cormorants, which U.S.

The Malahat First Nations and Steelhead LNG plan for a floating natural gas liquefaction plant proposed for the waters of the Saanich Inlet. The Mill Bay-based Malahat First Nation and Vancouver-based Steelhead LNG have entered into a partnership - to be known as Malahat LNG  - to develop an liquefied natural gas facility in Bamberton, about 40 kilometres north of Victoria, B.C. The floating plant would be moored to the shoreline of the Malahat-owned land formerly known as Bramberton, and would be expected to generate revenue for 30 years, according to Steelhead. Representatives of the partnership made the announcement of a mutual benefits agreement and a long-term lease.

U.S. Two overdue divers offshore from San Jose Island, Texas, were rescued by a U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) helicopter crew Saturday afternoon. The two San Antonio men, Dennis Garrett and Robert Holms, were diving approximately 16 miles off the shoreline of San Jose Island at approximately 10 a.m. when they became noticeably overdue, leading the captain of the dive boat Reel Excursions to contact the USCG on marine band VHF-16 after growing concerns that they were 40 minutes overdue and could not be found.

A  Canadian company jumped into British Columbia's crowded liquefied natural gas (LNG) export fray with a plan to build a $30 billion terminal on Vancouver Island. Steelhead LNG said it applied to Canadian regulators for permission to export up to 30 million tonnes of LNG a year for 25 years, joining a list of fourteen companies vying to build projects in the Pacific Coast province. The National Energy Board has already approved export licenses for nine projects in British Columbia. With Steelhead, it has five more under review, as global and domestic companies scramble to build the facilities needed to ship cheap Canadian gas to energy-hungry Asian markets. The Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) is fining Olympic Tug & Barge of Seattle $16,500 for spilling oil into Port Angeles Harbor last November. The spill occurred when a company-owned fuel barge was overfilled while being loaded with fuel oil. Ecology determined the Nov. 7, 2012, heavy fuel oil spill occurred because of an error by the barge operator. More than 1,700 gallons of fuel spilled to the deck of the barge with nearly 50 gallons entering Port Angeles Harbor. The oil transfer was being conducted at the Tesoro Port Angeles Terminal located at the foot of the spit Ediz Hook. Olympic Tug & Barge had oil containment boom placed around the barge prior to starting the fuel transfer which helped contain the spill.

Under New Ownership, Freeman Marine becomes part of the Advanced Marine Technologies Group. Freeman Marine Equipment Inc., a globally recognized brand and major US supplier to the worldwide marine industry, is now part of Advanced Marine Technologies (AMT). The company was purchased by AdvanTec Global Innovations of British Columbia, Canada. AdvanTec owns the four companies that make up the AMT Group. President George W. Bush recently delivered remarks on the Columbia River Channel Deepening Project in Portland, Ore., announcing a $15 million budget amendment for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to begin construction on the project. President George W. Bush said he will propose to add $15 million to the federal budget to fund deepening of the Columbia River navigation channel from the current 40 ft. depth to 43 ft.. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued its final determination finding that the Puget Sound steelhead is a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. Coast Guard officials recalled more than 300 reservists this past Friday to carry out various missions throughout the Gulf of Mexico and the inland waterways in response to the need for increased security across the nation. The USCG has been authorized to activate its entire reserve force of 8,000, if necessary, to ensure security of ports and waterways. They will also aid with New York rescue and recovery efforts while ensuring the ability to maintain other pertinent operations, including search and rescue, and illegal narcotics interdiction operations. Reservists throughout the Gulf and inland waterways will serve as boatcrews, security details, marine safety inspectors and communications watchstanders, among other positions.

Litton Ingalls Shipbuilding signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with SeaAmerica Cruise Lines, Inc., based in Hollywood, Fla. Under the MOA, LSS and SeaAmerica will develop a ship design leading to contract negotiations for the construction of two 42,000-ton, 1,000-passenger cruise ships. The program will include options for two additional ships. Construction of the ships would utilize both of Litton Ship Systems' production facilities, Litton Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula and Litton Avondale Industries in New Orleans, and would maximize the resources and experience of both shipyards to achieve operating synergies.
