Lengthened Research Vessel Gets a New Life

The R/V Connecticut operated by the University of Connecticut (UConn) Marine Sciences program was recently lengthened from 76 feet to 90 feet, giving scientists and crew on board the oceanographic research vessel some much needed extra space. The 1998-built R/V Connecticut had been operating at its original length of 76 feet since its construction, but the vessel required additional staterooms and lab space. “Things were pretty cramped at the old length,” said Turner Cabaniss, the program’s marine operations manager.

New W-class Yacht Designs

W-Class Yacht Company is expanding its family of yachts to include 100’, 123’ and 135’ models. The first of the new designs, the W.123', was developed by Bruce Johnson (formerly of Sparkman & Stephens) in collaboration with Rockport Marine Yacht Design. The new racer/cruiser yachts will retain the ‘Spirit of Tradition’ and performance attributes of the existing W-Class Yacht Company’s W.37’, W.46’ and W.76’ models. New Shipyard for Belfast's Working Waterfront

According to the Marine Public Broadcasting Network, a new shipyard is opening in Belfast. Boat builders, led by J.B. Turner and partners Taylor Allen of Rockport Marine and Steve White of Brooklyn Boatyard, will construct composite and classic wooden yachts. Mystic Seaport, Herreshoff Marine Museums Collaborate

Mystic Seaport Museum and Herreshoff Marine Museum announced that they have entered into an agreement in which the Herreshoff Marine Museum and Mystic Seaport will become affiliated. Mystic Seaport and the Herreshoff Marine Museum are entering into a broad collaborative relationship because each museum’s mission, assets, programs and aspirations are complementary with the other. The agreement provides both Museums with new opportunities to tell the broad story of the American maritime landscape. Both Museums will continue to operate independently with their existing assets, but will serve as resources to the other as needed and as agreed.

Koch Receives America and the Sea Award

William I. Koch, founder of the Oxbow Group, philanthropist, collector and sailor, has been named the recipient of the America and the Sea award which is presented annually by Mystic Seaport. Koch will receive the award Thursday, October 29, at a gala held in his honor in New York City. The annual award recognizes an individual or organization whose contributions to the history, arts or sciences of the sea best exemplify the American spirit and character. Previous winners have included pre-eminent yacht designer Olin J. Stephens II, respected author and historian David McCullough and the President and CEO of Crowley Maritime Corporation Thomas B. Crowley, Jr.
