China to Push LNG Shipbuilding

China would like to compete with South Korea in the field of building liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers building.South Korea has won 86 percent of the world's total orders or 52 orders for LNG carriers so far in 2018, according to Clarkson Research. The remaining nine orders were shared by companies from China, Singapore and Japan.Though China leads offshore engineering products and mega container vessel shipbuilding sectors, the country is a laggard in LNG shipbuilding.A recent report in the country's official media China Daily quoted Tan Naifen, deputy secretary-general of the China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry (CANSI) as saing: "The global demand for LNG carriers will continue to surge in the long term…

GTT Cuts Outlook on Ship Construction Delays

French supplier of systems for marine transportation of liquified natural gas (LNG) Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT) reported strong growth in its first half results on Thursday but cut its 2016 revenue outlook, blaming delays in the construction of some ships.   The company, which supplies technologies used to store LNG at very low temperatures during shipping, said it now expected full-year revenue of around 240 million euros ($264.14 million), down from its previous guidance of over 250 million euros.   GTT confirmed the other elements of its guidance, namely a 2016 net margin above 50 pct and a dividend amount, for 2016 and 2017, at least equivalent to that paid for 2015.    Reporting by Alan Charlish

LNG-fueled Bulker Design Approved by DNV GL

DNV GL Group President & CEO Dr Henrik O. Madsen (right) presents the CEO of Oshima Shipbuilding, Sho Minami, with the AiP certificate for the Japanese yard’s LNG-fuelled Kamsarmax bulk carrier design

DNV GL has presented Oshima Shipbuilding Company with an Approval in Principle (AiP) certificate for a LNG-fuelled Kamsarmax bulk carrier at the Nor-Shipping exhibition in Oslo today. The new design has been found to comply with DNV GL class rules and all current and upcoming regulations, including the new emission control regulations and the draft IGF Code for fuel with a low flashpoint. As regulations on harmful ship emissions such as sulphur become stricter, reducing SOx, NOx, CO2 and particulate matter is at the top of the agenda for many players in the maritime industry.

BG Group wins EXXON LNG Cargo

ExxonMobil's Papua New Guinea liquefied natural gas (LNG) export project has awarded a November cargo to BG Group as part of a two-cargo tender that closed this week, two traders said. The tender award has not been officially announced yet, and it remains unclear which company won the second cargo, if any. Demand for LNG has weakened considerably in recent weeks as a short-lived rebound in the price of spot supply lost momentum, with prices for November delivery trading below $14 per million British thermal units. Trading companies betting on a price rebound this winter began to store LNG on tankers in the hope of taking advantage of a market structure called contango, where later-dated delivery periods fetch higher prices.

Kirby Corp. CEO Joe Pyne is "No Ordinary Joe"

“Companies are successful because you have a bunch of people pulling their oars at the same time. They do the little things more right. That requires everybody working to make it successful.”

When Joseph H. Pyne joined Dixie Carriers in 1978, little did he know the maritime juggernaut he would help to create. When he took over as president in 1984, the company owned about 20 boats and 50 barges, with a value of about $35m. Today, after nearly 30 years, 50 acquisitions, it has a market cap well in excess of $4B, and its fleet hovers around 350 boats and 950 barges, commanding approximately 35% of the U.S. market. Joseph H. Pyne, 65, recently spent some time with Maritime…

LNG Demand to Drive Offshore Growth in Asia

Singapore – Soaring demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) across Asia is driving major new investments into exploration and infrastructure capabilities. This will stimulate growth in the region’s rapidly expanding offshore and marine sector, as new developments will require additional offshore assets and support services from regional players. Furthermore, due to the synergies between Asia’s gas reserves and ship-design capabilities, the region could pioneer a long-term move toward more LNG utilization to reduce vessel emissions and fuel bills of the offshore support vessels supporting these projects. However, seizing these growth opportunities and moving towards gas-powered vessels of the future…

Gas Ship Facts: LNG Fast Facts

LNG (liquefied natural gas) is natural gas, primarily methane, which has been cooled to its liquid state at -260°F (162.2°C). Liquefying natural gas reduces the volume it occupies by more than 600 times, making it a practical size for storage and transportation. How is LNG shipped? • Specially designed ships are used to transport LNG to U.S. import terminals. • All LNG ships are constructed with double hulls. How are LNG tankers and facilities being kept secure? Security measures for the offshore portions of marine terminals are required by U.S. Coast Guard regulations. The Coast Guard prevents other ships from getting near LNG tankers, while in transit or docked at a terminal. • LNG is not explosive.
