Wärtsilä Power for Two New Tug Boats

The engines and steerable thrusters supplied by Wärtsilä are delivering for a pair of two new tug boats operated by the Turkish Directorate General of Coastal Safety. Following sea trials, the first vessel is already in operation, while the second will enter service in April 2019. The vessels were built in Eregli under project management by the Yutek shipyard and site team, and the orders with Wärtsilä were booked in 2017.The bollard pull rating for the tug boats has been certified by the Turkish Lloyd classification society as being 75 TBP.

Algorithm Developed to Optimize Waterway Transit Schedules

An algorithm has been developed to schedule transit vessel traffic in two-way waterways where safe distances between transiting vessels must be maintained and passage restrictions may hold. It limits the negative effects of the safety constrains on cargo volume throughput by finding schedules which increase the utilization of these waterways. The potential of this algorithm has been demonstrated on a plausible model of the Strait of Istanbul, and also the Suez Canal has been identified as a waterway where the algorithm could increase the volume of goods transported.

Ship Crashes into Mansion in the Strait of Istanbul

Majed and Randy,  Sierra Leone-registered dry cargo ship collided into a Ethem Pertev's water-front mansion located on the Bosporus in Istanbul's Kanlıca neighborhood. Luckily no one was injured in the incident. The accident happened due to a malfunction in the steering mechanism of the 106-meter-long ship. After the incident, the ship dropped anchor under the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge and then was towed to Büyükdere. While there is material damage to both the ship and the mansion, the Center for Vessel Traffic Services in İstanbul reported that there was no loss of life or environmental pollution. 'Accident Zero' VTS Campaign Launched by IMO

IMO Secretary-General launches initiative with International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation & Lighthouse Authorities (IALA). IMO Secretary-General Koji Sekimizu, during his closing address to the IALA VTS (Vessel Traffic Services) Symposium in Istanbul, Turkey, praised the safety record of the Turkish Straits VTS, which came into service in 2003, and encouraged IALA and VTS operators to undertake an initiative in which ports, harbours, straits and sea areas with VTS would count, and publicise, the number of consecutive accident-free days.
