Pakistan Port Attack Kills Two Soldiers, Eight Militants

Yokohama Port Call is First by an LNG-powered Containership in Japan

A port call made by CMA CGM Liberty at the Honmoku D4 terminal in Yokohama on Monday is the first by a liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered containership in Japan. At 15,000-TEU, the containership also ranks amongst the largest vessels to be calling in Japan.CMA CGM Liberty is one of three e-methane ready LNG-powered vessels that the Group has lined-up on the weekly Asia Central South America 1 (ACSA1) service. They form the ACSA1 service fleet of 12 vessels, ranging from 12,000 to 15,000 TEUs and deployed on the regular Transpacific service.

Indonesia Inaugurates $3B 'Strategic' Port

USS Coronado Departs Singapore

The littoral combat ship USS Coronado (LCS 4) departed Singapore Nov. 4 after completing a 14-month rotational deployment to Southeast Asia. During the deployment, the ship and crew operated with navies of 16 partner nations, participated in 11 multilateral and bilateral exercises, and made 10 strategic port visits across the region. "The rotational deployment of USS Coronado demonstrated the relevance of LCS as a platform tailor made for the dynamic and congested sea lanes, straits and archipelagos of South and Southeast Asia, providing flexible options and tactical advantages," said Rear Adm Don Gabrielson, Commander, Task Force 73. "We made tremendous strides in a challenging, forward deployed environment and the team is already applying lessons learned to future deployments in 2018.

First Bunker Supply by Barge at Paradip

Gulf Petrochem Group, the UAE based global bunker supplier, has set another milestone in its operations with the first-ever bunker supply by barge at the non-conventional port of Paradip in Odisa, India’s east coast in a joint effort with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL). Gulf Petrochem arranged for the supply of 810 metric tons of bunker fuel IFO 180 CST by barge. Typically, supplies were made to the non-regular bunker port of Paradip only by Road Tanker Wagons (RTW) and for small volumes.

APL launches India East Coast Express Service

APL today announced the launch of the India East Coast Express (IEX) service – a new weekly service which directly connects the North Asia markets of Korea and China to Chennai, India. “The new IEX service facilitates our customers’ growing business need for additional and more competitive shipping options. Through the IEX service, shippers will benefit from fast and reliable transit between the North, Southeast and South Asia markets. India: Iran Port Contract Likely

India will on Monday sign a commercial contract with Iran to build and run a strategic port on Iran's southern coast, the Indian government said on Friday, to help it gain a foothold in Iran and win access to central Asia and Afghanistan. Talks to build the Chabahar port have been on for years but since the scaling back of Western sanctions against Iran, India has pushed hard for the project so it doesn't lose out to other such as China, who are keen to invest. The deal under which India will develop two terminals and cargo berths at Chabahar, on the Gulf of Oman, will be signed during a visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Iran beginning on Sunday.

India to Develop Port in Bangladesh

India is planning to establish a port in Bangladesh, says the Minister for Shipping, Nitin Gadkari. A high-level committee will be sent to the neighbouring country in this regard. "A shipping ministry delegation led by a joint secretary will visit Bangladesh next week to study the site and prepare a detailed project report," he said. A final decision will be taken after the recommendations from the committee, and investment proposals will be finalised only after that. However, a senior official said the proposal is to set up a port at Payra in Bangladesh and a detailed project report is ready. Apart from Bangladesh, India has expressed keenness to develop ports for various countries, including Africa and Iran.

USDOT Designates Gulfport, MS as a Strategic Port

The Mississippi State Port Authority was notified by the U.S. Department of Transportation Maritime Administration (MARAD) that the Port of Gulfport has been designated as a Strategic Seaport by the Commander, Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC). US Port Projects Awarded $44.3 Mln in Grants

After evaluating 627 applications, 50 of which were from ports, for the FY 2015 Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grants, U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) Secretary Anthony Foxx today announced 39 awards for $500 million in funding to be made in the seventh round of this multimodal, discretionary grant program. Of those, five awards totaling $44.3 million, or about 9 percent of total funding, are going to commercial seaports or to projects that directly aid the efficient movement of goods to and from America’s ports.

Iran Offers India Bigger Role in Developing Port of Chabahar

The port of Chabahar in southeast Iran is central to India's efforts to circumvent arch-rival Pakistan and open up a route to landlocked Afghanistan where it has developed close security ties and economic interests. According to a Reuter's report, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has asked India to invest in infrastructure projects worth $8 billion, including an expanded role in developing a strategic port that will open up access to Central Asia, Iran's envoy to New Delhi Gholamreza Ansari said. "The port of Chabahar in southeast Iran is central to India's efforts to circumvent arch-rival Pakistan and open up a route to landlocked Afghanistan where it has developed close security ties and economic interests,” Iran’s ambassador said.

India, Iran Ink Port Deal Despite US Warning about Haste

India reached a deal on Wednesday to develop a strategic port in southeast Iran despite U.S. pressure not to rush into any such trade agreements before world powers clinch a final nuclear accord with Tehran. Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari and his Iranian counterpart Abbas Ahmad Akhoundi signed a memorandum of understanding to develop the Chabahar Port on the Gulf of Oman, near Iran's border with India's arch rival Pakistan. "Indian firms will lease two existing berths at the port and operationalize them as container and multi-purpose cargo terminals," the Indian government said in a statement, adding that a commercial accord would be needed to implement the pact.

Governor Commits $35 Million for Florida Port Projects

Governor Rick Scott announced at the American Association of Port Authority’s (AAPA) Annual Convention in Orlando a commitment of nearly $35 million for strategic port projects across Florida that will be recommended to the Legislature for the upcoming legislative session. •    Port Canaveral – $9.7 million for development of a container yard. •    Port Everglades – $14.7 million to support the Turning Notch project. •    Port of Tampa – $10.4 million to improve its container yard.

Port Everglades to Receive $16.5M in State Funds

The Florida Seaport Transportation and Economic Development (FSTED) Council approved $16.5 million in allocations to Port Everglades to lengthen a cruise berth and to extend the port’s Southport Turning Notch to allow for more cargo berths. These allocations, which were approved under two different state funding sources, will become part of the Florida Department of Transportation  (FDOT) 2014/15 Work Program that comes before the Florida Legislature for approval this next legislative session.

Guam Designated 'Strategic Port'

The designation of 'Strategic Port brings with it many challenges not only for the US Coast Guard, but also for all those with a stake in port operations. For this reason each strategic port is mandated to form a Port Readiness Committee (PRC) which brings together representatives of the 10 federal agencies and local port stakeholders. The PRC was established formally this past January when stakeholders met for the first time to begin dialogue on strategic concerns associated with facilitate both defense and commercial supplies through the same port. The committee is chaired by the captain of the port and includes more than 40 local, federal, and Department of Defense agencies.
