ESA to Partner with One Sea Alliance

Waterborne Signs MoU with Hydrogen Europe

Hydrogen Europe and the Waterborne Technology Platform signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 13 May 2019  to foster opportunities of hydrogen based fuels as part of zero-emission waterborne transport.The European research and innovation platform for waterborne industries said in a press release that this MoU will help both parties to identify opportunities for hydrogen-related technologies in order to reduce the significant emissions of waterborne transport.Furthermore, the MoU will help them both to explore the contribution of the waterborne sector in scaling up the development of hydrogen technologies in ports and industrial zones, in synergy with other sectors (e.g.

Inmarsat Signs MOU with Hellenic Space Agency

LR Joins Collision Avoidance Research for Autonomous Ships

LR is participating in the MAXCMAS project, a £1.27million collaborative research project that aims to investigate, develop and implement real-time collision avoidance algorithms for autonomous maritime vessels. The MAXCMAS project aims to develop COLREGs (International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea 1972) compliant collision avoidance navigation for autonomous ships and other Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs). Compliance with current and future regulations is instrumental to the wide-scale use of USVs at sea. Being able to demonstrate satisfactory autonomous operation that meets the COLREGs is also pivotal to maritime safety. The project also hopes to carry out comprehensive machine execution of the COLREGs and demonstrate these in part in real-world representative sea trials.

Fincantieri, Gibbs & Cox Launch R&D Initiative

Fincantieri Marine Group LLC, the U.S. subsidiary of Italy’s shipbuilding giant FINCANTIERI S.p.A., and Gibbs & Cox, Inc., the independent naval engineering and design firm in North America, announced a joint strategic research and development initiative in the ship and vessel design arena. The initiative will focus on future ship and vessel concepts with applications within the United States as well as the international marketplace. It will investigate means of developing innovative ship concepts with improved affordability and production efficiency features. Australian Bio-Robots to Explore in the Indian Ocean

CSIRO will be releasing a fleet of floating bio-robots between Christmas Island and Madagascar next week to measure biological indicators in the Indian Ocean including dissolved oxygen, nitrate, organic matter and particles. A bio-robot is a robot which can measure properties relevant to biology like organic matter. Four bio-robots, each worth up to $100,000, are being dropped into masses of spinning water. It will be the first time CSIRO has used the new BioArgo robotic floats to measure this massively under-sampled part of the world. "These can tell us about the growth of plankton, how much carbon they take up, how much gets used up the food chain and how much gets buried," CSIRO project leader Dr Nick Hardman-Mountford said.

At the Greener Shipping Summit – Ships of the Future conference held in Athens yesterday, Dr. Nikolaos Kakalis, Head of DNV GL Strategic Research & Innovation in Greece, showed how the Viking Lady, an offshore supply vessel (OSV) in daily operation in the North Sea and full-scale test laboratory, could lead the way to improvements in the safety and efficiency of high-risk operations. Dr. Kakalis presented the specific battery hybrid propulsion system and its benefits for Viking Lady to the Greek shipping community.

The Defense Science and Technology Organization (DSTO) and Lockheed Martin Australia have signed a new strategic alliance to collaborate on a range of technologies for strengthening defense and national security. The agreement was signed for DSTO by the Chief Defence Scientist Dr. Alex Zelinsky and for Lockheed Martin Australia by Chief Executive Raydon Gates. “This ten year agreement with Lockheed Martin Australia reaffirms DSTO’s commitment to enter into long term partnerships with industry for enhancing Australia’s current and future defense capability,” Dr. Zelinsky said.

Unmanned Ships Now a Reality

Drones do it and spacecraft have too, for many years. Recently, also, automobile makers and small boat makers have introduced their first autonomous vehicles on the streets, and waterways. Unmanned vessels on the ocean is no longer a dream – it is a reality. And according to those in the know, the reality will really start to come to fruition in the coming decaded. The MUNIN project (Maritime Unmanned Navigation through Intelligence in Networks) is investigating potential concepts for a fully or partially unmanned merchant vessel. The case ship is a dry bulk carrier of handymax size, operating on routes between Europe and South America in the beginning.

Bulk Carrier Wind Project Concluded

Zodiac’s bulk carrier Cape Flamingo was the focus of a wind energy monitoring project, as the project partners investigated the potential to improve fuel efficiency. In 2012 Lloyd’s Register’s Strategic Research Group joined forces with Totempower Energy Systems to support Zodiac Maritime Agencies in assessing the potential for wind-generation devices to be placed onboard commercial ships. Marine Propulsion Wind-power Assessment

Lloyd’s Register’s Strategic Research Group has joined forces with Totempower Energy Systems and Zodiac Maritime Agencies to assess the potential of wind-generation devices onboard commercial ships as the maritime industry steps up its pursuit of viable carbon-alternate fuels. A fully autonomous wind-monitoring system designed and assembled by Totempower has been installed on the Zodiac-managed bulk carrier Cape Flamingo. Sensors were installed in locations where the best wind conditions and the most relevant environmental data (wind speed, direction and turbulence) could be expected, with consideration given to the potentially most effective locations for onboard wind generation.

LNG Solutions for Large Container Vessels the Focus of GL and IHIMU Joint Development Project. LNG as ship fuel is already a proven alternative for short sea shipping, but what about the primary engine of global trade - the boxship? To investigate and develop solutions for large LNG fuelled container vessels classification society Germanischer Lloyd (GL) and IHI Marine United Inc. (IHIMU) signed an agreement for a joint development project (JDP). GL and IHIMU will be working together on a concept study for a 13,000 TEU container vessel fuelled by LNG.

GL Exchange Forum - Report on MEPC's 62nd session

The subject of Carbon Dioxide dominates the future of many industries today. Whether it be the Shipping, Automotive, Aviation, or Power Generation industries the questions of how to account for, reduce, produce, capture and minimise the impact of Carbon Dioxide generated by that industry is seldom left out of the discussion. So it was Germanischer Lloyd’s traditional recap of the latest session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of International Maritime Organization (IMO), focused on the groundbreaking developments at the 62nd session. The 62nd Session was notable for several reasons, the use of a vote to approve the measures rather than by consensus and the establishment of a North American emissions control area for example.

Gas As Ship Fuel, GL Forum

Gas as ship fuel was the topic of the March 18 GL First Class Exchange Forum which highlighted GL's approach towards the environmental concerns of the maritime industry. The forum addressed all aspects related to LNG as an alternative ship fuel. Invited speakers presented the LNG supply chain development from a ship owner's and gas terminal operator's view. Maersk, Lloyd’s Register Test Bio-Fuels

Lloyd's Register is to play a major role in a two year program to test the suitability of bio-diesel for use in powering marine engines  The feasibility study will take place on board the Maersk Line container ship, Maersk Kalmar. Collaborators in the biodiesel project are Maersk Line, Maersk Tankers, Maersk Supply Service, Maersk Drilling, Maersk Ship Management, Lloyd’s Register’s Strategic Research Group, and a consortium of Dutch subcontractors. The project is being part funded by the Dutch government and co-ordinated by Maersk Maritime Technology (MSM). The bio diesel FAME (fatty acid methyl esters) used for the test will be based on sustainable crops grown in (temperate) regions or reused oils.

Technical Committee Discusses Flexibility in Ship Design

The new "Technical Committee on Risk Management" of Germanischer Lloyd was established to respond to the growing significance of risk-based approaches for the maritime industry. Germanischer Lloyd Reorganizes Operations

Germanischer Lloyd (GL) has restructured its business operations, dividing its two main operating areas into maritime services and industrial services. In a press meeting in Hamburg on March 4, executive board members Dr. Of a total group turnover of $160.4 million in 2000, about 80 percent was provided by maritime services and 20 percent by industrial services. Maritime services, whose main operation is ship classification, is comprised of tightly-focused central services coupled to the decentralized field service. The organizational structure runs along the value-adding chain with only three divisions: classification and flagstate affairs, ship technology and advanced engineering and strategic research.
