Work to dismantle and remove the old West Street Pier in Gravesend is well underway. The pier was used for a number of years by passengers of the Gravesend-Tilbury ferry. But in 2012 the ferry service moved to the renovated Town Pier.The old West Street pier has therefore not been used for a number of years and is now in very poor repair. The structure was further damaged in winter storms last year.The Port of London Authority (PLA) has recently taken ownership of the old pier and begun work to remove the structure. Two more routes will be added to New York City's popular new ferry service, connecting millions of New Yorkers to new neighborhoods, growing job centers, housing and more.The new Soundview and Lower East Side routes will be launched later this month, according to the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) and NYC Ferry operated by Hornblower.The Soundview Route will launch on August 15, running from the Soundview section of the Bronx (Clason Point Park), to E.90th Street on the Upper East Side, to East 34th Street, ending its run at Wall Street/Pier 11.

The U.S. Navy will commission its newest guided-missile destroyer, the future USS Ralph Johnson (DDG 114), during a ceremony Saturday, March 24, at Columbus Street Pier in Charleston, S.C. Ralph Johnson, the 65th Arleigh Burke-class destroyer to be commissioned, will be able to conduct a variety of operations, from peacetime presence and crisis management to sea control and power projection. Ralph Johnson will be capable of engaging in air, surface and subsurface battles simultaneously and will contain a myriad of offensive and defensive weapons designed to support maritime warfare, including Integrated Air and Missile Defense capabilities. Coast Guard and partner agency crews responded to a ferry aground with 27 people aboard near Rockaway Inlet, New York, Wednesday evening. The Flyer, an 80-foot New York City Ferry became stuck on a sandbar after departing from the Rockaway terminal at 5:15 p.m., en route to Wall Street’s Pier 11 at approximately 5:30 p.m. Boatcrews from Coast Guard Station New York, and Station Sandy Hook arrived on scene with New York City Fire Department (FDNY) and New York City Police Department (NYPD) marine units. Due to shallow water, Coast Guard crews were unable to safely approach the ferry. An FDNY crew evacuated 23 passengers and a crewmember safely and placed them aboard one of their rescue boats. All passengers were transferred to the Brooklyn Army Terminal in Brooklyn, New York.

The Port of Seattle’s 2015 cruise season began May 1 at Smith Cove Cruise Terminal with the arrival of the Holland America Line Westerdam. The port expects 192 cruise ship calls this season, bringing an estimated 895,055 revenue passengers. “Each of these cruise ships contribute $2.5 million to the local economy, which comes out to over $400 million for this cruise season,” said Port Commissioner Stephanie Bowman. “We also want passengers to stay in the area an extra few days to spend more time and money in Washington state.

The Port of San Diego to improve the air quality around its Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal by providing Alternative Maritime Power (AMP). The Board of Port Commissioners approved a non-appealable coastal development permit to bring shore power to the marine terminal, located on San Diego's waterfront. Reducing emissions using shore power benefits local air quality, with the community of Barrio Logan being the closest impacted neighborhood. The project is a part of the Port's Capital Improvement Program (CIP).

Pacific Tugboat Service, a member of the Port of San Diego's Green Business Network, has converted its fleet of 20 vessels. Shore power, also known as cold ironing, is the process of switching from a ship's onboard diesel power supply to shore-based electrical power while the ship is at the dock. This process reduces polluting air emissions and noise levels from idling engines. "I think the Green Business Network taught us is that we're not just a small business trying to make a living on the Bay, but we're a neighbor," said Pacific Tugboat Service Vice President Stephen Frailey.

While maritime activity showing renewed signs of life along the entire Pacific Coast, from Prince Rupert to San Diego, shipbuilding is becoming ever-more dependant on the US Navy and Jones Act ships, while ship-repair yards are focused on a broad spectrum of boats and ships. In California, some of that work has focused on re-powering harbor craft to meet the state’s stringent environmental regulations. The 102-year old steam-powered, ocean-going tug, Hercules, is in dry-dock at Bay Ship & Yacht Co.’s Alameda yard for maintenance and repair work. Earlier this month she was towed across the bay from her berth at the Hyde Street Pier of the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park, operated by the National Park Service. She will be in dry-dock at BS&Y for about a month for sandblasting and painting the riveted steel hull, replacing the boat deck, and other maintenance work at an estimated cost of some $500,000.

A diesel spill was reported and contained after an out-of-service tugboat sank at the 38th Street pier in Brooklyn, N.Y., the week of January 15. No one was onboard the vessel at the time it sank. About 300 to 400 gallons of diesel fuel were reported to have spilled. Miller Environmental responded to the scene, placing absorbent boom around the area in order to contain the spill. No fuel is reported to have escaped the boom. Divers were able to stop the tug from leaking more fuel into the harbor. "Sector New York is monitoring the situation very closely," said Lt. j.g. Maria Rosario, Coast Guard Sector New York's command duty officer. Arrangements to salvage the vessel are being made by the D'Onofrio General Contracting Corporation. The cause of the incident is under investigation.

A $1m plus contract was recently awarded by the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park to Bay Ship & Yacht Co. of Alameda for the restoration of the historic three-masted, steel-hulled, square-rigged sailing ship, Balclutha. Known locally as the National Maritime Museum, the park is operated by the National Park Service. Fred Shepherd, facility coordinator for the park, which is located adjacent to San Francisco's Fishermen's Wharf, points out that the ship is a star attraction at the park, which has almost 1 million visitors per year.

Embarcadero Systems Corporation (ESC) won a contract to develop physical security plans, security technology and security plan implementation recommendations for the Port of San Francisco’s seven and a half miles of shoreline stretching from Hyde Street Pier in the north to India Basin in the south. Under this five-month contract, the ESC-led team will provide a comprehensive Physical Security Plan suited to protect the unique needs of the Port of San Francisco, recognizing its significant tourist industry and open access to waterfront facilities. The plan will work in collaboration with local, state and federal resources; coordinate with the city’s Emergency Operation Plan; and comply with the National Incident Management System (NIMS).

NY Waterway has ordered four new high-speed ferries from Allen Marine of Sitka, Alaska, and anticipates to have some of the new boats in service this year on new routes, including the East River, according to NY Waterway president Arthur Imperatore, Jr. Known as the Sea Otter class, each of the new ferries will carry 97 passengers at speeds of more than 30 knots, approximately 35 mph. The single hull boats house three water jet engines, as well as a bow-loading feature that (a NY Waterway ferry exclusive) allows safe, efficient passenger loading and unloading. The Otters are constructed to carry commuters from East 90th Street to Wall Street's Pier 11 in 15 minutes, or from Hunterspoint, Queens to Pier 11 in 12 minutes.

The Coast Guard Cutter Alert will hold will hold a change of command ceremony, at the 17th Street Pier, Astoria, Ore., today at 10 a.m. Commander Matthew D. Bliven will relieve Commander Kelly L. Hatfield. CDR Bliven will command operations of the 210-ft. medium endurance cutter which include, but are not limited to, homeland security, search-and-rescue, fishery patrols and maritime law enforcement. CDR Bliven’s most recent assignment was as Commanding Officer, Coast Guard Naval Engineering Support Unit, Alameda, Ca. CDR Hatfield will continue his Coast Guard career as Commander, 11th Coast Guard District, Office of Law Enforcement, located in Alameda.
