The STX Turku Shipyard in Finland recently lost the order for a third Oasis class cruise ship and an option for a fourth to ”sister” shipyard STX France, when neither the owner, the financially troubled STX Group, nor the Finnish government wanted to inject a missing $64.3m to the capital of the shipyard. The yard is currently building two 97,000gt cruise ships for TUI Cruises. In January the shipyard delivered the world’s first LNG-fuelled big size passenger-car ferry, the Viking Grace for Baltic ferry operator Viking Line.

Start of production of the new Finnish Border Guard offshore patrol vessel at STX Rauma Shipyard. STX Finland Oy’s Rauma Shipyard started the production of next generation offshore patrol vessel to be built for the Finnish Border Guard. The start of production at the Rauma Shipyard was carried out following traditions. Chief of the Finnish Border Guard, Lieutenant General Jaakko Kaukanen pressed the launch button. The event held in the steel construction hall was witnessed by the representatives of the Finnish Border Guard, the Finnish Environment Institute, STX Finland and the classification society Germanisher Lloyd, and members of the press.

The NB 1378, RV Mirabilis, equipped with DPS, is a  62.4 metres long and 14.3 metres wide versatile vessel. The tasks of the ship will include monitoring of fish stock, as well as sorting, processing, freezing and storage of fish, as well as collecting biological samples from the seabed and water quality research and analysis. Other tasks envisaged are the control of fishing off the African coast, and meteorologica research. RV Mirablis is provided with accommodation for 44 crew members and research personnel. “We are very satisfied to deliver the RV Mirabilis to the customer on schedule and as agreed. Cooperation both at the national level and between the project groups has been extremely good and close through the whole process," says Toivo Ilvonen, Director of STX Rauma Shipyard.

The keel-laying of the Double Ended Ferry to be built for Suomen Lauttaliikenne Oy (Finferries) was performed at STX Rauma Shipyard on Friday, 20 April 2012. The environmentally friendly next-generation ferry will be delivered to the customer at the end of 2012. The vessel will enter traffic on the Korpo – Houtskär route at the beginning of 2013. The keel-laying ceremony following old tradition performed at the STX Rauma Shipyard was witnessed by representatives of Suomen Lauttaliikenne (Finferries), STX Finland and the classification society Bureau Veritas. Particular attention has been given to the efficiency and safety of the ferry by, for example, minimising the docking time with help of wide bow and stern ramps.

On Wednesday, April 4, 2012, the STX Finland Rauma Shipyard delivered a polar supply and research vessel to the South African government's Department of Environmental Affairs. Newbuilding 1369, S.A. Agulhas II is a multipurpose vessel which, among other tasks, operates as a supply, research and passenger vessel, as well as an icebreaker. Representatives from the client, the South African Government's Department of Environmental Affairs, as well as the Embassy of South-Africa in Finland, The South African Maritime Authority, classification society Det Norske Veritas and STX Finland and the press were there to witness the flag-changing ceremony. The ice-strengthened vessel is approximately 134 metres long and has accommodation for a crew of 45 and some 100 researchers or passengers.

STX Finland's Rauma Shipyard celebrated the launch of the special purpose vessel ordered by the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources of the Republic of Namibia. Representatives of the owner, classification society Bureau Veritas and STX Finland were present. Newbuilding No. 1378, RV Mirabilis, measures 62 meters in length and, upon completion, will operate as a research vessel, gathering information on fish stocks and their living environment. The versatile and modern research vessel meets the latest standardized performance criteria. Particular attention has been paid to the vessel's serviceability and low maintenance costs. The vessel provides accommodation for 44 crew members and research personnel.

On December 21, 2011, STX Finland Oy and the Finnish Border Guard signed an agreement on construction of a next generation offshore patrol vessel. The vessel will be built at the STX Rauma ship­yard and delivered to the customer in November 2013. The highly advanced vessel will be 96 metres long and 17 metres wide and will be capable of serving a large variety of functions. Construc­tion of the vessel will bring over 400 man-years of labour to STX Rauma shipyard person­nel and its supplier network. The domestic content of the project is estimated to be 90%. The main duty of the offshore patrol vessel is to operate in open sea patrol.

On December 20, 2011, STX Finland Oy and VentusVis Oy signed a letter of intent, the purpose of which is to develop wind park for the city of Rauma on Finland’s west coast. The goal is to get building permissions for three wind turbines within the UPM Rauma mill site and one within the area of the STX Rauma Shipyard. VentusVis Oy is a company which develops land assets owned by UPM suitable for wind power investments and STX Finland Oy offers construction, user, maintenance and lifecycle services for wind parks. VentusVis Oy is a joint venture between UPM-Kymmene Oyj and TuuliSaimaa Oy. It aims to convert land assets owned by UPM suitable for wind power production. STX Finland Oy’s long-term goal is to develop into a turnkey deliverer of offshore wind parks in particular.

Start of Production of Double Ended Ferry at STX Finland Rauma Shipyard. On Tuesday, 13 December 2011, STX Finland Oy's Rauma Shipyard started a production of a Double Ended newbuilding no. 1380 for Finferries. The vessel will be delivered at the end of 2012. Construction of the 65-metre ferry will bring 100 man-years of labour to STX Rauma shipyard per-sonnel and the personnel of its supplier network. The start of the production was attended by representatives of Finferries, STX Finland, the classification society Det Norske Veritas, and members of the press.

STX Finland Oy and Eide Marine Semi AS, a subsidiary of Eide Marine Services A/S, signed a contract for the outfitting, completion and delivery of two highly sophisticated well intervention vessels with an aggregate contract value exceeding EUR 300 million. The t well intervention vessels with deadweight of 31,000 tons will have a length of 122m and a width of 45m. The vessels are designed to operate in rough open sea conditions on Brazilian continental shelf. Vessels have innovative hullforms securing high seakeeping characteristics  together with DP3 dynamic positioning system  and truster arrangement. Large deck area  provides  opportunity to arrange all well serving equipment in most efficient way. The project will create a high outfitting work load for STX Finland and its network.

STX Finland and STX Windpower are  starting a joint collaboration on turnkey windpark supply in Northern Europe, focusing on offshore sites in the Northern Baltic Sea region and onshore sites in Finland, Sweden and the Baltic states. A Letter of Intent was recently signed by both companies stating that STX Windpower B.V. supplies direct drive turbines and STX Finland completes the project on an EPCI basis. The German navigation system supplier Raytheon Anschütz was recently awarded a contract for the delivery of an integrated bridge and navigation system for a Fisheries Research Vessel, newbuilding 1378 at STX Finland. STX Finland has again selected Raytheon Anschütz to deliver the integrated bridge and navigation system, as well as the Dynamic Positioning System (DP) and a radio station according to GMDSS A3 for this advanced Fisheries Research Vessel. The 62 meter long vessel is being built at STX Finland Rauma shipyard and will be owned by the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources of the Republic of Namibia. The acting President and Chairman of STX Finland, Mr Su-Jou Kim, has decided to reorganize STX Finland´s management group to improve the efficiency, synergies and competitiveness of STX Finland. Mr Jyrki Heinimaa has been appointed Executive Vice President and CFO (Chief Financal Officer) of STX Finland Oy. He will be responsible for the following functions: accounting & finance, communication, synergies and strategy. In addition Mr Heinimaa is responsible for the new business areas such as wind power. Mr Heinimaa has been with STX Finland in various management positions for 15 years. Mr Timo Suistio has been appointed Executive Vice President and COO (Chief Operating Officer) of STX Finland Oy and also shipyard director of the STX Rauma Shipyard.

On 8 April 2011, STX Finland Oy and Finferries signed a contract for the construction of a Double Ended Ferry to operate in Finland, Turku Archipelago. The ship will be built on STX Rauma shipyard and it will be delivered at the end of 2012. The ship will be 65 metres in length and 12.8 metres in breadth. The construction of the environmentally friendly ferry will bring some 100 man-years of work to STX Rauma shipyard personnel and the personnel of its supplier network. The value of the contract will not be published.

Launching of the second car-passenger ferry, NB 1368 the Spirit of France, which STX Rauma shipyard is building for P&O Ferries, was conducted on Thursday, 17 February 2011. The vessel is a sister ship of the Spirit of Britain, which was handed over to the client in January 2011. The ceremony was attended by representatives of the client P&O Ferries and STX Finland, theclassification society Lloyd’s Register and media representatives, as well as numerous other guests invited by the shipyard and the ship-owner. As water was flooding the drydock, 1368 pieces of colourful balloons were released into the sky. “The construction of the Spirit of France continues as planned and at a rapid pace.

STX Finland Oy and Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources of the Republic of Namibia have, on 11.2.2011, signed a contract for the construction of a fisheries research vessel. The ship, with a contract value of approximately EUR 35 million, will bring some 250 man-years of labour to STX Finland’s Rauma shipyard, with delivery scheduled for spring 2012. This versatile specialized vessel will be approximately 62 metres long and will provide accommodation for 45 crew members and research personnel. The research vessel is specifically designed for the purposes of Namibian fisheries research. The vessel meets the latest standards set for this type of vessels requiring, in particular, special care in the design of laboratory equipment, propulsion and power generation system.
