Protection of the Arctic Environment High on the IMO Agenda

The IMO Subcommittee on Ship Design and Equipment (DE) has made progress in its efforts to develop international environmental and safety regulations for navigation in polar regions. For the recent session of the Subcommittee on Ship Design and Equipment held in March 2013, Denmark had, together with other Arctic coastal States, submitted a proposal for a special chapter on marine environment regulations for the Polar Code. The Polar Code is a special set of regulations that ships must comply with to navigate polar waters.

Schat-Harding Calls for Consensus on Lifeboat Hooks

Lifeboat manufacturer and service provider Schat-Harding says IMO and some parts of the shipping industry need to move more quickly to a consensus on vital lifeboat safety issues which have important consequences for the safety of seafarers. David Bradley, vice president operations, Schat-Harding Service says, “Good things are worth waiting for. But there is such a thing as waiting too long. The IMO debate over lifeboat hooks has gone on for too long. Seafarers deserve better.

RINA creates Giuliano Pattofatto scholarship

chairman of IMO's Maritime Safety Committee, who died last year. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a final year student in Naval Architecture at the University of Genoa. It will fund an internship at the International Maritime Organisation, to allow the student to understand the processes of international ship safety regulation. IMO's secretary general, William O'Neil, says, "I whole-heartedly welcome this scholarship. Gaspare Ciliberti, president of RINA, says, "Giuliano devoted his life to enhancing international co-operation to improve safety at sea. in 1966. In the same year, he joined RINA where he rose to be deputy director general and technical director. ship safety. from 1994 until 1999.

Maritime Industry Mourns Loss Of RINA's Technical Director

Giuliano Pattofatto, technical director of Registro Italiano Navale (RINA) passed away on March 8 from heart failure. After graduating with a degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering in 1966, he joined RINA and eventually rose to the position of deputy director general and technical director. He started participating in the work of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in the early 1970s within the Italian delegation and chaired various groups dealing in particular with fire safety and passenger ship safety. He was chairman of the Subcommittee on Ship Design and Equipment from 1990 to 1993, and chaired the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) from 1994 until 1999.

The Shipping Coordinating Committee, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, will hold two meetings in Washington, DC. The first meeting (on February 8) is to prepare for the 48th session of the IMO Subcommittee on Ship Design and Equipment (DE). Topics on the agenda include longitudinal strength of tankers; large passenger ship safety; measures to prevent accidents with lifeboats; and protection of fuel tanks. The second meeting (on April 12) is to prepare for the 90th session of the IMO Legal Committee (LEG). Topics on the agenda include the Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against the Safety of Maritime Navigation; the draft Wreck Removal Convention; and the Provision of Financial Security. 70 Fed. U.S. Shipping Coordinating Committee to Conduct Meetings

The U.S. Shipping Coordinating Committee, sponsored by the Department of State, will conduct three public meetings. The Working Group on Radio Communications and Search and Rescue will meet on January 5 in Arlington, Virginia. Topics on the agenda include maritime safety information on GMDSS; recognition of mobile satellite systems; and large passenger ship safety. 70 Fed. Reg. 76899 (December 28, 2005). The Subcommittee on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping will meet on January 17 in Washington, DC.
