ABP, Thor Shipping Sign New Port of Hull Contract

Associated British Ports (ABP) announced a major new agreement which sees Dutch shortsea specialist Thor Shipping & Transport commit 10 years to The Port of Hull.In addition, ABP has invested GBP6 million into Thor’s 10-acre leased terminal, allowing substantial infrastructure improvement works and an additional 2.5 acres of container storage space. As part of this key investment, in March 2019, a hybrid £3.5 million Liebherr harbour crane will arrive, to bolster eco-friendly operations for many years to come.Since July 2014 Thor has trebled its tonnage through the two-berth terminal on King George Dock. It has a regular container and breakbulk service from its own short sea operator - Sunline - connecting the UK with the East Coast of Sweden twice a week.

Khalifa Port Receives New STS Cranes

Abu Dhabi Terminals (ADT), the manager and operator of Khalifa port container terminal informs that the terminal has received a new batch of 3 of the world’s largest and most modern ship-to-shore (STS) quay cranes. The Super Post Panamax quay cranes were produced by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industry Co. Ltd. in China at a cost of US$28-million, and were transported by ship to Khalifa Port’s container terminal (claimed to be the first semi-automated container terminal in the region). Just one of these STS cranes is 126.5 meters high and weighs 1,932 tons.

Technical proposals for the shipment of natural gas under compression rather than in the refrigerated, liquefied state have surfaced from time to time over the years, but have received a lukewarm response from the marine industry. The considerable cost of the shipboard containment methodology has been a major stumbling block. Now, a Canadian engineering contractor has come up with an altogether more economic solution to the cargo carrying needs of compressed natural gas (CNG), and pitched at relatively short-distance sea transport applications.
