The ruling party, which campaigned on promises of solving the energy crisis, wants to ease shortages by expanding LNG shipments before a 2018 general election. The official, who declined to be named, said the tender was launched earlier this month with a request for proposal (RFP) by Jan. 24. The first load of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) traded by Qatari supplier, Qatargas, is planned to reach the Port Qasim LNG terminal on March 26, says a report in Reuters. Qatargas is providing the LNG to Pakistan at $8 to $9 per Million British Thermal Units (MMBTU), according to sources. According to official sources at the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources, the first cargo of LNG will arrive in Karachi on March 26. However, the Port Qasim Authority (PQA) has also raised operational, technical and regulatory constraints over LNG imports. The Port Qasim authorities said that other shipping traffic will be hampered and delayed by nine to 10 hours which will result in heavy financial claims on PQA by other port terminal operators. Hence government should undertake required dredging.

Pakistan Gas Demand Expected To Double

Pakistan's demand for natural gas is anticipated to double by the year 2005, an increase which the country require an increase in gas imports, the state-run Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) said. SSGC managing director Mukhtar Ahmed said gas supplies of 500 million cu. ft. (14.16 million cu. m) per day from five new fields would be available by the end of 2002, but high local demand required other options such as imports. Currently, Pakistan produces 2.4 billion cubic cu. ft. (67.96 million cu. m) a day, one billion cu. ft. a day short of the domestic demand. Ahmed said that gas demand would grow by 3,581 million cu. ft. per day in 2005 and projections for the year 2010 was 3,868 million cu. ft. per day.
