World's First: Japanese Firms to Looking to Build Sustainable Bulk Carriers for Copper Transport from Chile

Japan's NYK Line said Thursday its NYK Bulk & Project Carriers Ltd. (NBP), Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (OSHIMA), and Sumitomo Corporation (SUMITOMO) had signed a memorandum of understanding to study, design, and construct the world’s first Handymax bulk carrier (ammonia dual fuel type) dedicated to the transport of copper products, that will reduce CO2 emissions to zero.The MoU signing comes just a year after Corporación Nacional del Cobre de Chile (CODELCO), a Chilean state-owned company and one of the world's leading copper producers, and NYK Bulk & Project Carriers Ltd.

ABS issued approval in principle (AIP) to Keppel Offshore & Marine for the ammonia-fueled ammonia bunker vessel at the heart of Project Sabre, an initiative from a consortium of organizations to develop an ammonia bunker supply chain in Singapore.As well as ABS, the consortium includes A.P. Naming Ceremony Held for Yinson's Anna Nery FPSO

Malaysian FPSO provider Yinson, with its project partner Sumitomo Corporation named the new FPSO Anna Nery, during a naming ceremony held concurrently in Jiangsu, China and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The FPSO Anna Nery is currently undergoing final conversion works and is going to set sail for Brazil in the third quarter, where it will be deployed at the Marlim Field located in the eastern part of the Campos Basin, about 150km offshore Rio de Janeiro.The FPSO will be stopping for a few days in Singapore and Mauritius for crew change and fresh supplies.

Fednav Orders 10 Bulk Carriers from Oshima

Canadian dry-bulk shipping company Fednav Limited on Thursday announced it has signed an agreement with Sumisho Marine Co., Ltd. (Sumitomo Corporation Group) and Oshima Shipbuilding to build 10 new oceangoing lakers. The ships will be built at Oshima shipyard in Japan, with the first vessel expected to be delivered in mid-2023.The new Fednav-Oshima designed super-eco lakers represent Fednav's most efficient vessels to date, the company said. Their carbon emissions will be 33% less than the vessels they will replace, including a Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) footprint at least 87% smaller.

Panama Canal Welcomes Inaugural Transit of LNG Sakura

The Panama Canal welcomed the inaugural transit of the LNG Sakura as it carried the first-ever liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipment from the Dominion Cove Point terminal in the United States to Japan. The transit, which occurred this past weekend, marks the beginning of a new LNG commercial route between the United States and Asia from the recently inaugurated Dominion Cove Point terminal in Maryland, the second U.S. LNG export terminal to come online after Sabine Pass began operations in 2016. Dominion Cove Point has two main clients: ST Cove Point, a consortium consisting of Sumitomo Corporation and Tokyo Gas; and Gail Global LNG, a subsidiary of GAIL LTD of India.

Dominion Starts Cove Point LNG Production

Dominion Energy Cove Point (DECP) has begun producing liquefied natural gas with its newly constructed natural gas liquefaction facility undergoing commissioning in Lusby, MD. All major equipment has been operated and is being commissioned as expected following a comprehensive round of testing and quality assurance activities. Shell NA LNG is providing the natural gas needed for liquefaction during the commissioning process and will off-take by ship the LNG that is produced. When commissioning is complete, DECP will produce LNG for ST Cove Point, which is the joint venture of Sumitomo Corporation and Tokyo Gas, and for GGULL, the U.S. affiliate of GAIL (India) LTD under 20-year take-or-pay contracts. DECP's liquefaction facility has a nameplate capacity of 5.25 mtpa of LNG.

US Expects East Coast LNG in 4Q 2017

Dominion Energy has announced that the 750 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d) Cove Point Liquefaction Project is in its final stages of construction, confirming with EIA that it is 95% complete as of August 2 and expected to be in-service in the fourth quarter of 2017. Located on the Chesapeake Bay in Lusby, Maryland, it will be the second large-scale liquefaction export facility to begin operations in the Lower 48 states and the first on the East Coast, said a press statement from U.S. Energy Information Administration. Will LNG Remain a Key Energy Source?

Japan imported 8.3 million metric tons of LNG in January, an increase of 1.06 million metric tons compared to the previous year. Today the first unit of a new bulk carrier developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) was delivered to Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) of the U.S., following its completion at Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. of Nagasaki, an MHI licensing partner. The newly delivered bulk carrier is the first of three vessels, designed to serve as grain carriers, ordered by ADM in 2011 from Sumitomo Corporation. The vessel was constructed by Oshima Shipbuilding with MHI providing the conceptual design and various green technologies, including MALS.

First Bulk Carrier Delivered to ADM of US

The first unit of a new bulk carrier developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), a vessel offering superlative energy efficiency and environmental performance, was delivered today to Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) of the U.S., one of the world's foremost grain processors, following its completion at Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. of Nagasaki, an MHI licensing partner. The incorporation of a wide spectrum of innovative technologies - including MHI's proprietary Mitsubishi Air Lubrication System (MALS), which reduces frictional resistance between the vessel hull and seawater using air bubbles produced at the vessel bottom - has enabled a 27% reduction in CO2 emissions, as verified, compared to conventional bulk carriers, exceeding the target figure of 25%.

Offshore Wind Sees New Capital Investments

With the support of technical due diligence advice from GL Garrad Hassan, Sumitomo Corporation and its subsidiary Sumitomo Corporation Europe last week agreed to invest significant amount of equity in two Belgian offshore projects. The Belwind 1 operational wind farm and Northwind project together account for 127 wind turbines and 381 MW of generating capacity with total project cost of about €1,550 million. The investment by Sumitomo is further evidence that offshore wind is attracting new sources of equity capital. Sumitomo agreed to take 39% of Belwind 1 and 33% of Northwind.

Fednav Adds Six Ocean-going Lakers to Great Lakes Fleet

Fednav Limited, the largest international maritime bulk carrier in Canada, announced the addition of six new vessels to its fleet. Ordered with Sumitomo Corporation and Oshima Shipyard, the environmentally advanced vessels will be built in Japan and will add substantial capacity to its Great Lakes-capable fleet of ships. As highly flexible vessels well suited to international trade, the 34,000-ton bulk carriers are adapted to the dimensions of the St. Lawrence Seaway and are specially equipped for navigating in ice.

Fednav Orders New Icebreaker

Fednav Ltd. orders ice-breaking bulk carrier from Sumitomo Corporation & Universal Shipbuilding Corporation, Japan. The new vessel has been ordered in order for Fednav to fulfil a long-term contract which provides for the transportation of nickel and copper concentrates from Canadian Royalties' Nunavik Nickel Project in northern Quebec to customers in Europe as well as the import from Europe of mine supplies and equipment. The Polar Class 4, 25,000 dot vessel,will be built at Universal's Tsu shipyard, and will be classed by Det Norske Veritas. The scheduled delivery date is December 2013.

Oceansaver Enters the Japanese Market

OceanSaver has entered the Japanese market with a major ballast water treatment contract for four open hatch bulk carriers being built by Japan’s Oshima Shipbuilding Ltd for Gearbulk. The 72,000dwt Open Hatch Bulk Carriers are being built to DNV class and each vessel will be fitted with a 1,200m3/h type approved Mark II OceanSaver system. The first two systems will be commissioned in 2012 and will incorporate OceanSaver’s second generation design, engineered for reliability, low maintenance requirements and low power consumption.

OMI Announces Delivery New Vessel

OMI Corporation today announced that it had taken delivery of the Amazon, a new 47,000 dwt product tanker, the first of a series of four sisterships being constructed for the Company by Onomichi Dockyard Co., Ltd. pursuant to contracts between the Company and Sumitomo Corporation. The vessel has entered into a previously announced three-year time charter. Craig H. Stevenson, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President of OMI commented that "This brings to fifteen the number of vessels on long term time charter, with two more new product tankers to be added during the first quarter of this year. We now have twenty handysize and handymax product tankers, making us the largest owner in the world in this size category. OMI has on order at shipyards two Suezmaxes and six product carriers.
