Russia to Build $2.2B Metal Plant to Feed Shipbuilding
Russia plans to build a metals plant in the Far East at an estimated cost of $2.2 billion and supply steel sheet to the Zvezda shipbuilding yard as part of a push to develop the Arctic, Rosneft CEO Igor Sechin said.The head of the oil producer said during a televised meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin that the planned facility on Sukhodol Bay would produce 1.5 million tonnes of steel sheet and steel pipe products per year.The Zvezda shipbuilding yard is set to play a prominent role in Russia's push to make the Northern Sea Route an important Arctic transit corridor for oil…
Tata Steel is crowning glory of HMS Queen Elizabeth
Today’s naming ceremony of the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth marks a major milestone in Tata Steel’s 12-year involvement in the project. In that time the company has supplied 40,000 tonnes of steel and developed three entirely new grades of lighter and stronger steel specifically for the future flagship of the Royal Navy. Tata Steel will also supply steel for the second carrier, HMS Prince of Wales. The naming ceremony will come five years after the first steel was manufactured at Tata Steel’s UK plants for HMS Queen Elizabeth and 33 months after the first section of the 280 metre-long vessel entered the dry dock at Rosyth, Scotland to commence construction.
San Pedro Port Seeks $1.65b for Expansion
Ivory Coast's port of San Pedro is seeking 777 billion CFA francs ($1.65 billion) from private partners to fund upgrades that aim to make it one of West Africa's top shipping hubs, including for iron ore and nickel, the transport minister said. San Pedro is already the world's leading port for cocoa exports, shipping more than half of total output from Ivory Coast, the top producer of the chocolate ingredient. It also exports coffee, palm oil, timber and cotton. But the government of President Alassane Ouattara wants to make the port the centrepiece of an ambitious plan that would see more than 8 trillion CFA francs invested in the development of the country's predominantly agricultural western regions.
Scana Industrier to Supply Steel for Ichthys Project
Scana Industrier ASA has through its subsidiary Scana Steel Stavanger, been awarded a new contract from Samsung Heavy Industry for delivery of steel casting intended for the Australian Ichthys project, representing a value of 36-million NOK. Including previously received orders from Samsung for the same project, the total value adds up to 93 MNOK. The project will commence activity immediately, and deliveries will complete by the end of 2013 and the contract includes approx. 60 casting components which are part of the mooring system for the Ichthys project. The Ichthys field off the NW coast of Australasia was named after the classical Greek word for “fish”.
