Lomar Shipping Names Bujor Technical Director
Libra Group's shipping subsidiary Lomar Shipping announced the appointment of Marius Bujor as its new Technical Director. Based in the company’s Bremen office, he succeeds Stylianos Papageorgiou who has been promoted to the position of Managing Director of lomarlabs, a new venture to collaborate with deep-tech start-ups.Bujor has been with Lomar for eight years, having joined in 2014 as a Technical Superintendent. He became a Fleet Manager four years later, and was promoted to Deputy Technical Director in late 2022, as Lomar prepared for the launch of lomarlabs.
ABB Wins Order for World's Biggest Offshore Wind Farm
ABB has won orders worth more than $150 million from Danish energy company Ørsted to supply technology to transmit wind energy from the 1,400 megawatt (MW) Hornsea Project Two, slated to be the world's largest offshore wind farm.The orders were booked in the second quarter of 2018 and are the first tranche of a global five year frame agreement for the supply of electrical and automation equipment for offshore and onshore wind power connection and integration to the grid, ABB said.ABB will supply its Static Var Compensation (SVC) Light technology with ABB Ability MACH control systems…
Cold Ironing Beneficial for Regular Port Users
The Zeebrugge port authority and POM West-Flanders launched a study to investigate whether or not it is technically and financially beneficial to install onshore power supply facilities on the quays and on ships. The study was executed by the Ingenium bureau, who selected the ships that call on Zeebrugge regularly and stay in our port for longer periods of time. For 25% of the calls in Zeebrugge, the study concluded positively. This is about 10%of the ships in Port of Zeebrugge. The international regulations for sulphur emission control places restrictions on sea vessels in the North Sea and in the European ports. This stimulates ports, terminal operators and shipping lines worldwide to implement the needed technology.
Rolls Royce Wins Large Dolphin Energy Contract
Rolls-Royce has been awarded contracts worth $136 million to supply technology and long-term services support to Dolphin Energy Limited which transports natural gas from Qatar to the United Arab Emirates and Oman via a 364 km subsea pipeline. Rolls-Royce will supply Dolphin Energy Limited with three industrial Trent gas turbine compression packages. The three new Trent units, each rated at 52 megawatts, will join six similar Rolls-Royce packages that went into service at Dolphin Energy’s Gas Processing Plant in Ras Laffan, Qatar in 2006. The equipment will be manufactured and packaged at the Rolls-Royce facilities in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and Mount Vernon, Ohio, U.S.A. Delivery of the packaged units to Ras Laffan will be in the second and third quarters of 2013.
NSRP Approves $1.3M for Cost Reducing Project
As part of the National Shipbuilding Research Program’s (NSRP) core mission to reduce the costs associated with Navy shipbuilding and repair, the NSRP Executive Control Board has selected 13 new research and development projects for award, totaling approximately $1.3m. These projects will be executed under the purview of the 10 NSRP communities of practice known as the Ship Production Panels. Focus and interest among panel members regularly reveal relevant project opportunities which may not be well suited for larger-scale funding via the primary NSRP solicitation process. The Board therefore typically sets aside an amount of money each year to fund relatively small (less than $100K), short-term (12 months or less) projects recommended by the Panel Chairs.
Deep Sea to Supply Cuba with Generators
After winning a $1.7 million contract to supply technology to Cuba, Deep Sea Electronics, a North Yorkshire manufacturer of control systems for the power generation industry, will distribute more than 4,000 generators for the project which is expected take 18 months to complete. The systems will help alleviate Cuba's growing electricity problems, caused by lack of investment which has resulted in frequent blackouts and energy shortages – a situation made worse by Hurricane Ivan. The company has recently invested $1.3 million to extend its production facilities at Hunmanby, near Filey, to prepare for future expansion. (Source: Yorkshire Post Today)
Raytheon Markets Maritime Defense System
The Globe is reporting that the cargo ship bears the name Osama. It's been registered in Syria. And it's steaming toward Los Angeles. That's the mock scenario playing out on a bank of giant plasma screens lined up for a demo here at Raytheon Co.'s Naval Integration Center on Narragansett Bay. The vessel has been tagged as suspicious based on data culled from shipping records. Raytheon engineers are using software to track its course. And they're combing databases tracing its history, ownership, and sister ships heading for US waters. Athena is part of a larger push by Raytheon, the nation's fifth-largest military contractor, into homeland security.
