Damen Shows New Class of Fish Farm Vessels

Damen has held the first viewing of its UV 4312 Fish Farm Support Vessel. The new class is the result of extensive discussions with the global fish farming industry and the result is a versatile vessel specifically designed to undertake the maintenance and support tasks particular to saltwater fish farms. The open day took place at the group’s headquarters at Damen Shipyards Gorinchem and was held for the benefit of operators from across the global sector. Cosco Shipping 2016 Profit Dip

Cosco Shipping International (Hong Kong) has seen its profit for the year ended December 31, 2016 drop 29 percent to HKD 236.5 million (USD 30.4 million) from HKD 362 million (USD 46.6 million) reported a year earlier. Although the company’s operating profit dropped to HKD 544.2 million for the full year from HKD 690.7 million reported in 2015, Cosco Shipping International said that its revenue for the period increased to HKD 7.4 billion from HKD 5.9 billion. In 2016, world economy has experienced deep adjustment, while international trade growth remained subdued. The international shipping market supply and demand remained unbalanced, while dry bulk shipping index and container freight rate index had hit a record low last year.

Rolls-Royce Plots Further Ship Intelligence R&D

Rolls-Royce has announced the latest stage in its research and development plans to make remote and autonomous shipping a reality and reap the benefits of increasing digitalization in the marine industry. The company said it is looking to develop partnerships and opportunities with other organizations around the world to, create the capability, competencies and jobs to supply the technology and components required. Today, the latest part of that program has been confirmed with the announcement, in Finland, of a significant research grant by Tekes – the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation.

Holland America Line Receives Association for Rescue at Sea Award

The captain and crew of Holland America Line’s ms Veendam were honored by the Association for Rescue at Sea with a prestigious AFRAS AMVER Award for the 2015 rescue of a pilot who ditched his aircraft in the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii. The Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue System was implemented by the U.S. Coast Guard in 1958, and the AMVER Awards were created in 1971 to recognize vessels that participate in the program. Holland America Line received the award at the annual Coast Guard Award Ceremony Sept. 21, 2016, at the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. Veendam’s Captain Eric van der Wal accepted the honor on behalf of the cruise line.

Blue Denmark Maintains Economic Foothold

The report "Employment and production in Blue Denmark 2015" was published today, providing updated information on Denmark’s vibrant maritime industries. For the second time, the Economic Council of the Labour Movement has drawn up a report on employment and production in Blue Denmark for the Danish Maritime Authority. This year, the report is based on national accounts figures until 2011 and figures on production and value added until 2014, therefore offering a more updated picture than the one given in last year's report, which was based on 2009 figures.

Yanmar Diesel Engines for Fast New Crew Tender

The expansion of the number of wind turbines out at sea near the northern Dutch coast was reason enough for Ubels Offshore to expand its fleet with a fifth ship last year. Operating from the port of Eemshaven, the fast aluminum crew tender Vrijheid III fulfils the strict safety requirements of its clients for the transport of passengers and goods. Henk Ubels Sr is very satisfied with the Yanmar diesel engines, which are proving their reliability day in, day out. Maritime contractor Van Oord is beginning the construction of the Gemini Wind Park this year. A total of 150 wind turbines will be built 85 kilometers off the coast of the province of Groningen, equating to an investment of €2.8 billion.

ASL Marine Buys Next-Door Indonesian Shipyard

Headquartered in Singapore, ASL own four shipyards in Singapore, Indonesia (Batam) and China (Guangdong). They inform they have conditionally agreed to purchase for US$20-million a shipyard belonging to Miclyn Express Offshore Limited (MEO), located adjacent to its own yard in Batam, Indonesia. The Batam shipyard is  situated in a free trade zone with industrial areas designated specifically for shipyards with infrastructure such as roads, telecommunications, utilities and supporting services.

EU 'Marco Polo' Freight Transport Project

Marco Polo aims to ease road congestion and its attendant pollution by promoting a switch to greener transport modes for European freight traffic. Railways, sea-routes and inland waterways have spare capacity. Companies with viable projects to shift freight from roads to greener modes can turn to Marco Polo for financial support. More than 500 companies have already done so successfully since the programme was launched.. Every year, a new batch of projects qualify for funding. What does the programme do? Marco Polo co-funds direct modal-shift or traffic avoidance projects and projects providing supporting services which enable freight to switch from road to other modes efficiently and profitably. Funding is in the form of an outright grant. It is not a loan to be repaid later.

Cruise Line Chooses ABB to Supply Power, Propulsion Systems

ABB, the power and automation technology group, has won an order to provide complete power plant and propulsion systems for the first new build ship for German cruise operator TUI Cruises. The ship is being built in Finland at the STX Europe yard in Turku. TUI Cruises, a joint venture between German tourism company TUI AG and Royal Caribbean International, is increasing its passenger capacity to serve the growing sea vacation market in German-speaking markets. Shipbuilder STX Europe has worked with ABB on numerous marine projects; ABB’s ability to deliver energy efficient systems was a key decision driver in this project. MAN PrimeServ Engine Management Contract

Nakilat’s wholly owned fleet of LNG ships is now covered by MAN PrimeServ, MAN Diesel & Turbo’s after-sales division, after an EMC maintenance agreement signed with STASCO – the shipping division of Royal Dutch Shell – which manages the Nakilat ships. The contract covers a period of 10 years and represents a breakthrough for the Engine Management Concept in that the contract covers an entire fleet. The agreement covers maintenance management/planning, assistance from PrimeServ superintendent engineers and fitters, as well as spare-parts for 25 LNG carriers (14 Q-Max and 11 Q-Flex). Each LNG carrier is equipped with two type MAN B&W 7S70ME-C or 6S70ME-C main-engines, and four type 9L32/40 or 8L32/40 auxiliary engines, and turbochargers.

RIL, ONGC Ops May Face Shut Down

Reliance Industries and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation may face an imminent shut down of offshore oil and gas operations after the Shipping Ministry issued new norms for vessels operating in Indian waters, the Times of India reported. DG Shipping had in May banned operations of all vessels that are more than 25 years old. ONGC has more than 100 vessels operating off the East and West coast providing supporting services to oil and gas production. A Reliance Industries executive said the company faced a similar fate for its 40-plus vessels working on bringing the gas field in Krishna Godavari basin to production. Source:   Times of

Wärtsilä in Talks to Acquire John Crane-Lips

In a move aimed at extending its claim as a single source ship's propulsion supplier, Wärtsilä Corporation and Smiths Group are in exclusive discussions regarding a possible sale by Smiths Group of John Crane-Lips to Wärtsilä. Wärtsilä and John Crane-Lips entered into a strategic alliance in October 2000 to provide total marine propulsion power systems through the Wärtsilä network. The acquisition of John Crane Lips is seen as a valued enhancement to Wärtsilä's position as a leading global ship power supplier. The acquisition would generate additional sales of more than EUR 200 million for the Marine & Licensing division of Wärtsilä. John Crane-Lips is a supplier of integrated marine propulsion systems and marine seals and bearings.

LCA's Ryan Retires

George J. Ryan will end his 20-plus year career as President of Lake Carriers' Association on January 15. Ryan will retire as one of the longest serving President's in the Association's 123-year history. James H. I. Weakley will succeed him. "George's contributions to the U.S.-Flag Great Lakes fleet are immeasurable," said James R. Barker, Chairman of The Interlake Steamship Company, one of the largest U.S.-Flag operators on the Lakes. "He safely navigated the industry through the economic tribulations of the mid-1980s when America's steel industry, Great Lakes shipping's largest customer, teetered on the brink of extinction. When it appeared the Jones Act would be sacrificed in a U.S./Canada trade agreement, it was George who awakened a slumbering U.S.

Wärtsilä Increases Shareholding In Wärtsilä India

Wärtsilä Corporation, holding at present 51% of the shares in Wärtsilä India Ltd., has made a public offer to the minority shareholders to acquire up to 49% of the shares in the Company. The total amount of the offer is about 16.5 million euro if all shares will be purchased. The offer is made at a premium of some 74% over current market price and 61% over the last 26 weeks' average price. The offer period ends on November 6, 2001. Wärtsilä Corporation has increased its shareholding in Wärtsilä India stepwise from the original level of 25%. The Group has normally 100% ownership in its local companies, and aims now at applying the same principle to Wärtsilä India. Wärtsilä India is listed on the stock exchanges in Mumbai and Delhi.
