Autonomous Vessel Seahawk Delivered to the US Navy
Leidos announced Wednesday that it has completed delivery of a cutting-edge autonomous vessel to the U.S. Navy, known as Seahawk. The Office of Naval Research awarded Leidos the cost-plus-fixed fee contract to build the vessel, with an approximate value of $35.5 million, in December 2017. Work was principally performed on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.“As technology continues to accelerate and adversaries become more sophisticated, our customers must constantly evolve,” said retired Rear Adm. Navy Space-Based Orbital Debris Sensor Gets Patent
Small orbital debris objects can threaten vital space-based assets. The Navy's patented compact debris detection device can detect debris in near real-time and provide essential trajectory data for future use. The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), Geospace Science and Technology Branch, received U.S. patent (#8976245), March 10, for the Optical Orbital Debris Spotter - a compact, low power, low cost, local space debris detection concept that can be integrated into larger satellite designs, or flown independently on-board nano-satellite platforms. Man-made debris orbiting the Earth continues to increase at an alarming rate - with objects smaller than one centimeter (cm) exceeding 100 million.

Record Breaking Month for Drug Seizures
The Coast Guard and partner agencies seized 11,300 pounds of marijuana before it reached U.S. shores in May, breaking a single-month record set a decade ago. "The Coast Guard and our interagency partners have already interdicted more marijuana near the U.S. maritime border with Mexico in the first two quarters of fiscal year 2012 than it did in all of 2011,” said Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Bob Papp. The record-breaking month started May 6 with the interdiction of approximately 600 pounds of marijuana and hash with an estimated street value of $544,200 off the coast of Miami.
Integrating European Maritime Surveillance
In a report published Nov. 3, the European Commission takes the first step towards establishing a comprehensive strategy for integrated maritime surveillance for Europe. The report, in the form of a Commission Staff Working Document, describes the current state of play as regards the surveillance, monitoring, tracking, identification and reporting systems put in place by EU Member States and EU Agencies. It also identifies the next steps to be undertaken and the challenges to be resolved in order to achieve an integrated maritime surveillance network for Europe. Adesta to Expand River Operations Security for the Jefferson County
Adesta, LLC, a systems integrator and project management company for communication networks and electronic security systems, has been awarded a $958,000 contract to install a waterside video surveillance system for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department along the Sabine/Neches Rivers. The system will effectively manage and monitor surveillance video at strategic locations along the waterway between Beaumont and Port Arthur, Texas. Adesta will engineer, install, test and turn up a fully integrated wireless video surveillance network. The project includes a network of cameras from remote locations along the Rivers, with video management from the United States Coast Guard Vessel Tracking Station and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.
